The Mix is our new online mix and interview series, dedicated to the spectrum of electronic music from around the globe, exploring sounds and stories from the early days of rave to the future.

Mixmag has a long history of publishing mixes, from our legendary cover CDs accompanying the print magazine to our worldwide video streams in The Lab. Last year we celebrated 40 years in the game and The Mix now arrives as a fresh outlet to document DJs and the musical movements they represent, showcasing their sound alongside an in-depth interview. The design pays homage to a previous Mixmag logo from the ealy ’90s, nodding to our heritage while using the square and rectangular building blocks to construct an aesthetic that works cohesively with contemporary design elements and digital motion systems.

We’ll still be bringing you the Cover Mix, The Lab and occasional sets in other formats, with The Mix is taking the place of our In Session and Impact features, intending to bring an updated look and vision to our flagship weekly DJ profile and sequencing them into one place, without separation. We hope you enjoy.

The Mix 003: Miley Serious

Nick León (@NICKLEON) is an artful DJ and producer from Miami who has always operated at the experimental fringes of electronic music. Though he has always pushed at the boundaries he never fully loses sight of the dance floor while colliding reggaeton, techno, ambient, dubstep and hip-hop. He is a frequent collaborator and something of an album specialist who most recently took inspiration from Florida’s diverse sub-aquatic ecosystems on his superb Projections of a Coral City album alongside Coral Morphologic.

Nick will be joining us at Dekmantel Festival 2024 and this week's mix is a great way to keep you going until then. It's an hour of loose-limbed and largely genre-less rhythm with a naturalistic feel. There's a blend of filtered and futuristic voices and centuries-old dancing rituals that take you to the heart of an ancient rainforest, all with his signature Latin flavours and an undercurrent dembow-laced beats.

Recorded live at our last Bossa Nova Civic Club monthly, Doula delivered what I’d consider to be easily one of the best sets we’ve ever had at a Sorry party. Bossa can be a chaotic room and its rare that you see a crowd there as stunned silent and deeply locked as folks were hearing Doula play that night. One of our favorite new DJs in New York, Doula is an incredibly kind person and an absolute killer DJ who we’re super excited to have close out the evening. She’s made appearances at great parties like Rare Frequency Transmissions, tossd, TOWER, Palm Wine, recently played b2b with DJ Voices for Drama Pride, and has a hotly anticipated new resident party called ESSENCE starting soon at the freshly opened Earthly Delights in Ridgewood. Borrowing some words from HYPNOSIS’s event she played because they are too good to not share… “Doula is a Bronx-born, Brooklyn based DJ unbound by genre known for inducing tantric mania through sensual and intricate sonic experiences. She is a mother to her crowd - with her you will receive what you didn’t know you needed.”

About the mix: "I live in Chicago and came up as a deejay here (just celebrated by 10 years of publically deejaying in September!) so while I always think about House music as a track with a certain kick and hat pattern, frequently with pianos, vocals, and horns; I think about the original reason House music was called House, simply because it was the kind of music played at the Warehouse. I think that any music that is played in Chicago can then be dubbed as House music because it’s in whatever “House” you are deejaying in. Because Chicago is my artistic home, this mix features a ton of songs that I have frequented in the club recently. Some can be considered house, some can’t, but because at the end of the day, House is about fun, I wanted this mix to be fun. I was struggling with how to approach it until I let go a bit and was like, just play, you do this all the time. This mix is giving so it’s called the It’s Giving Mix. You can dance to it, study to it, fuck to it, honestly it’s very malleable for whatever situation you’re in."
