Metamorphic is happy to announce a new artist to the label family! Mirror Touch is a new project from London-based producer, Tim Van Zandyke. The sound of Mirror Touch can best be described by a moment in time when mid 90's trax records from the US Midwest combined techno's brutalist grooves with layers of emotive harmonies harking back to Detroit's funk, soul and jazz legacy. The techno sound hurtled forward, blazing new paths of experimentation, minimalism and hypnosis. MirrorTouch points back to that magic moment when Techno emerged from Detroit, with a series of hardware tracks that combine emotional rawness with the flow of 21st century techno.
 
Opener “Balancing” flows elegantly, directly driven as lush and silk like synths all communicate in perfect harmony. Blurring the lines between genres once more is “Astral Mechanics”, transcending and dreamy sounds fill out the space around clean drums and crisp claps, thought provoking and emotive music. 
 
The mastermind behind the multiple decade spanning label, Dan Curtin, creates an electro tinged remix of “Astral Mechanics”, meandering mechanical whirrs and bleeps make this a rugged affair, flipping the coin on the original. Closing the EP is “Prophet Motive”, cruising into the sun set, riding an elastic groove which leads you down a path of curiosity. 

 A masterclass of techno nostalgia, rough and ready for modern day dancefloors. Mirror Touch fully captures the essence of the legendary Metamorphic label.

Berghain resident DJ nd_baumecker has been a key voice in house & techno for years. As part of Barker & Baumecker, he has put out essential EPs and LPs on Ostgut Ton. Snax is a musician, singer, songwriter, producer, performer and DJ who brings real character to everything he does, releasing extensively on his Random Records label and many others. The pair have previously teamed up for remixes, bootleg and otherwise, and now expand on that with this inventive release. Says the artist of this new release, “‘Mandemic' sprang from the concept of what it might be like if / when our world’s current situation became eroticised, perhaps even evolving into a queer sex party. The only name for such a party would have to be ‘Mandemic', of course, and Snecker quickly stepped up to deliver its theme song.” It occurred to Snax that he knew another musician friend who would simply love to be on board with this, and that would be none other than Khan, the other half of their disco duo Captain Comatose. Together they provide the lyrical backdrop to this throbbing track for future dark rooms. ‘Mandemic’ is a sexy house tune with bumping drums and rubbery bass. Steamy vocals add intimacy while the pixelated leads lash about the mix next to splashes of acid and plenty of FX. Veteran DJ, songwriter and illustrator Pete Ellison remixes with a more trippy feel. The drums are chunky, and the chords jump about while dripping with naughtiness. Fauve Records boss and lifelong crate digger Romain FX then flips the tune into a stripped-back jack track with a driving bassline. Expressive melodies remain in place to ensure maximum impact on the floor. The second original, 'Things We Got,' is full of flavour from the pulsing bass, the angular drums and sprinkles of cosmic synth. It's warm and humid with an ever-evolving arrangement that keeps you on your toes. ‘Mandemic’ is a typically charming and characterful new take on house music from Freeride Millenium, and once again features striking artwork from Daniel Rajcsanyi.

His intricately minimal, yet highly musical productions have seen the light of day on Dekmantel, Perlon and Rush Hour Records alongside his own label, Proper’s Cult. Now, this renowned crazy cat presents a new set of works, ‘Home’ EP with MUSAR Recordings.

Teaming up with drummer, producer and long-time collaborator, D. (real name Derek Van Beelen) who has also appeared solo on ‘Proper’s Cult’, the two come together on ‘Home’ to explore the genre of house; expanding it into new, idiosyncratic forms.

PREMIERE: San Proper & D - Get On Down [MUSAR]

EPM Podcast 137 comes from producer, DJ and Breaker Breaker label runner Haider. His healthy disregard for genre boundaries is reflected in both the house, bass, jazz, UK funky, breaks and techno cross pollination of both his DJ sets and label output. As equally at home releasing house, jazz or even indie shoegaze his DJ sets also come with a wide and varied palette as showcased here. From the deep house grooves of Moodymann and Derrick Carter & Chris Nazuka he takes in Detroit’s Terrence Parker and Berlin’s deep and dubby Tigerskin alongside techno / breaks legend Martyn, scuzzy electro lord Gesloten Cirkel and even the dubbed out pop of Mariah Carey. Originally cutting teeth in his native Sheffield bassline scene, Haider kicked off his career with the release of his debut record, ‘The Lock Off EP’, in 2008 under his then moniker DS1.The following year, Haider was commissioned to remix grime don Tempa T’s single ‘Next Hype’ as DS1. In addition to delivering the remix, he also did a cheeky UK funky bootleg, which became a massive unofficial anthem. 

Heavily inspired by the purple sound of artists such as Joker and Starkey, between 2010 and 2013 Haider turned his hand to grime. With early productions being championed by Plastician on Rinse FM and Starkey on BBC Radio 1, both artists went on to release DS1 tracks on their respective labels Terrorhythm (‘I DNT KNW’) and Slit Jockey (‘Emotions Colours and Spacefood’.)

In 2015 while studying at Goldsmiths, Haider discovered Ross From Friends’ music, and was so impressed by its potential that he released his debut EP ‘Alex Brown’. This marked the first release on Haider Masroor’s newly launched label Breaker Breaker, beginning what he describes as “a mission to push forward thinking music, regardless of genre and hype.”

Since then Breaker Breaker have released the debut EPs for a broad spectrum of artists, including jazz duo The Colours That Rise (who recently dropped an album on Rhythm Section), Japanese producer RGL and most recently, indie shoegaze trio Night Tapes.

Further displaying a knack for recognising promising musicians and helping quality people to connect, Haider also managed new jazz leaders Yussef Kamaal – helping to book their first tour and signing the now classic album ‘Black Focus’ to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint in 2016.

Turning his hand to production again, Haider released the first EP under his own name in 2018 with the highly acclaimed ‘Do What You Love’ EP. Catching the attention of AUS Music’s Will Saul, he then released the equally rated ‘10961’ EP on the label the following year.

His latest EP ‘Dance Now, Cry Later’, once again on AUS Music, followed the release of ‘Endless Clouds’ and ‘The Muses Come Out at Night’ which were released on Haider’s own Breaker Breaker Records and Mella Dee’s Warehouse Music in 2020.

Detroit’s Jason Hogans steps up for Alelah Records as the first producer from across the pond to offer their own unique set of house groove for the label. And what a groove we’re given; five tracks peruse through low-slung, synth-heavy beats pushed by infectious drum breaks.

‘Why Keep Going’ is all about innocent synths in the mids met by some sleaziness in the low end. The basslines continue and on ‘Big Room Slaps’, it takes centre stage, making things real murky. ‘Dance While You Sleep’ combines a hard-hitting beat with a soft series of loose keys and a warm synth.

‘Do Away With Borders’ is Hogan venturing into stranger territory: bass deep from the depths and filtered, floating keys come up to the surface while a drowned out sample bops its way into view as the track rolls. ‘Hazy Funk Slap’, finally, breaks out into a full on frenzy of jazz drums - naughty.
