Marcal is back for round two on Dustin Zahn’s Enemy Records with “Cyber Dystopia.” Marcal’s trademark grooves and clever vocal processing make this one of his most exciting and hypnotic records yet. It’s pure class…there isn’t much else to say!

BUT we have to try anyway…
“Cyber Dystopia” starts off with Bionic Jungle, a trippy peak time roller sprinkled with uh, lifeforms or something? We haven’t been able to identify them, which is just proof that Marcal is living on another planet we haven’t been to yet. We’re standing by for the invite.

Moravex’s Paradox picks up where Bionic Jungle left off…chugging along in his signature style. It’s loopy. It’s tooly…but still heavy on the grooves, making it a perfect fit in deep and peak time sets alike.

Nothing About the United States hits a little harder and darker. Dissonant drones and catchy sound design take over, flipping the switch from “party” to “punish.” For fans of his recent track on Enemy, “Never Wrote This.”

Don’t Fear the Three is a classic Marcal percussive workout in heads-down mode. It’s as equally powerful as every other track on the record.

“Cyber Dystopia” is all about the world we are living in right now: artificial intelligence, smart houses, smartphones, self-driving cars, deepfakes, fake news, cybernetic warfare, metaverse, social networks, the internet of things, machine learning, virtual reality...
We are definitely entering a new stage of civilization, the post-modern era.
But,
Are we living an 'apocalypse of self-abdication' already? Or we are, as humans, simply evolving as technology evolves? There will ever be a limit to technology? Will it help as much it can also destruct?

We will find out soon.

Following an impressive start to life in 2023, Marcel Fengler’s masterfully curated HARDPROOF series stomps forward into the new year with another hard-hittng edition. Coming in hot with an expectedamount of minimal techno potency, the fourth instalment of IMF’s HARDPROOF VA series welcomes Sons Of Hidden, Rey Brennan, JANEIN, Mathys Lenne and Jay York with five creatively crafted original tracks.

The VA gets underway with Sons Of Hidden and ‘Forgotten Garden’, diving straight into a pulsating flurry of fat, rounded kicks and hissing hat grooves alongside its relentlessly pumping low-end drive whilst glitchy vox shots, sensual vocal accents and sinister samples give it an eerily tribal/primal feel before Ray Brennan’s ‘Defender’ brings more savage low-frequency power from the outset. Riding a reeling vocal sample from the off, its progressive peaks and troughs, filled with corrosive melodic components, keep things on full intensity for the duration.

JANEIN comes next with ‘Perseids’ taking things on a hypnotic trip in this tribal-tinged kaleidoscope of dystopian synths and mind-bending modulation before Mathys Lenne’s ‘Lisa’ delivers more stripped-back ominous vibes alongside harshened industrial grooves and a rolling bassline. The release ends with Jay York and ‘Halsey’, which features a distinct alien feel from the outset and offers another solid exhibition of narcotic musicality set to the score of stadium-sized beats and a mix packed with fatiened frequencies from start to finish.

With some DJs getting paid 1M+ for shows and artists selling Afro-house to major labels for similar sums, it feels like we are staring into the abyss of another mass commercialisation of dance music. Thankfully, regardless of what is happening at the upper levels, the underground is alive with innovative talent. SMIFF is one such artist. Crafting his art in a post-dubstep, future techno world, he sounds like what would happen if Skream went back in time to grab Jeff Mills from his Purpose Maker era and showed him all the cool shit you can do with drums and samples in 2024. For this remix, he takes "Work" on a 135 bpm ride through swinging subs and razor-sharp rat-a-tats. If you are looking for dancefloor mayhem, step up; it's arrived.

After her sublime rendition of “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”, Elliotte returns to GU to take on another much-loved dancefloor anthem. With Ann Saunderson’s blessing, we have recreated the Octave One classic. Returning on production duties are the legendary Deepshakerz who’s “Midnight Ritual” was one of our favourite (and supported) Afro releases of 2024. Add to that Kevin McKay’s synths and strings and we have a sure-fire Afro House cut that should work for DJs across the dancing spectrum. From the main floor to the beach bar, this one will deliver.
