We welcome our fellow townsman, the man with the many monikers Steve Mensink aka Frits Wentink. He has been making waves for a few years now with his original take on house & techno and thru mindblowing livesets with handmade controllers. Recently he started his own imprint Will & Ink together with Presk for their techno output wich took the scene by storm.

As Frits he takes things on a housier tip as he showed the world before with beautiful releases on Fourth Wave and Triphouse. Bassheavy, UK influenced melodic gems are therefore featured on his brandnew Wolfskuil release.

Liquid Stranger - Bomb The Block (Cyberoptics Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]

EXTENDED PLAY emerged from playing around with a vintage KORG MS-20 synth and with a little piece of software for the Nintendo DS called KORG DS-10, which emulates the sound of an original MS-20. This led to a playful blend of two passions: Vintage-Synths and Retro-Gaming. The very first tracks of the album were finished within a week of touring around by car and train. Yet, at that stage it wasn’t all so clear that the album will soon become a veritable 18-track-longplayer with a multitude of International features.

EXTENDED PLAY is a concept album which takes on the HipHop genre in a very playful sense. Which by no means suggests that completing it didn’t require a big portion of seriousness and devotion. Quite the contrary was the case: a lot of approaches were chosen only to be discarded again and after more than three years of recording the album finally took shape.

All of the instrumentals were recorded directly from the Nintendo DS. The maximum of 6 synth tracks and 16 patterns per song was utilized to the fullest, without any presets and using subtractive synthesis only. Limitation definitely lead to innovation in this case.

The name of the album originated like this, by the way: at first the record was supposed to be called simply “EP”, yet after boasting a full 18 tracks the title just didn’t seem appropriate anymore. So it was decided to take the abbreviation literally and just call it “extended play”, which, in the end, fits the playful gaming theme very snugly.

Deejay Astral, the artist formerly known as Palace, is making moves to establish his new persona, and his new EP on W&O Street Tracks (out Dec. 7) should more than see to that. In the loosest possible sense, the three tracks that comprise Astral's self-titled three-tracker could be classified as house music. But it's so much more than that. None of the tracks on the EP stick to a rigid format, constantly toying with house music's innumerable tropes. "Phantasy", in particular, takes a deep house melody and distorts it to give it a crunchy analogue feeling not often heard in house music. Add to that the unsettling, tortured vocal refrain that drips with anguish and you've got a piece of house music that won't be forgotten in a hurry. This is one hell of an opening gambit and one we can't wait to see him top.
