The latest house duo to emerge from the Parisian underground bid us bonjour with this stellar debut on Dialect, fusing retroist 80s leanings with brain mulching techno voodoo. Title track ‘Scandale’ and ‘Lame De Fond’ share the same pulsing sequenced heart, transplanted from Carpenter soundtracks and Italo disco classics and then zapped with a thousand volts of warped, detuned and malfunctioning synthesizer electricity. ‘El Topo’ replaces the bristling sequences with a spiky post punk snarl courtesy of live guitars, bass and organ (a la Suicide no less) but retains the twisted electronics for a woozy half time experiment in dancefloor psychedelia. Essential for fans of Joakim, Ivan Smagghe and early Gesaffelstein productions.

1. Mondowski is something like a regular on Relish. After his 2 EPs SURFIN HELL and Klub Psycho he delivers Hollywood Babylon. Psychedelic and Post-Punk inspired, Hollywood Babylon is a 7min mesmerizing journey between distorted guitars, airy voices and troubled synthesizers. He is a french DJ and producer residing in London since a few years.

Working with yet-to-be-discovered Scottish artists as well as established and revered acts like Justin Robertson and Tom Blip who have already graced the venue’s DJ decks, no other track summed up Paradise Palms' mission in 2017 quite like ‘I See You In The Shrubs’ by Edinburgh enigma Eyes of Others. 

A woozy, pulsing jam; equal parts of nervous energy and stoned groove - ‘Shrubs’ immediately received a cosign from Paris’ Les Yeux Orange and made its way into a highly respectable group of DJs’ sets. Andrew Weatherall has since taken things a big step further and reworked ‘Shrubs’ into a sprawling 8 minute journey of his own, backed by live drums and deep sub-bass while Donald Dust’s ‘Other Thumper’ ups the energy with playful NYC post-disco style and psychedelic percussion.

Bufi is back with ‘México 70’ a new album, a couple of years after his sophomore LP on Discotexas ‘Revelación’.

With a broader, more eclectic palette of sounds and rhythms, this time the music gets infected with cowbells and bongoes, prehispanic samples, funky guitars, "guapachoso" basses and ethereal vocals. From the pseudo cumbia of "Hillalum (Amazónica)" to the suicidesque jam of "Impresionistas", this addictive album will induce you to have a lot of fun from the beginning till the end.

The artwork is a design by portuguese artist Braulio Amado, responsible for the covers of Bufi's previous two singles extracted from this same LP, "Brujerías" and "Hillalum (Amazónica)", released late 2018.

Russian brothers Sasha and Sergey Lipsky return to Disco Halal for the third time under their famed Simple Symmetry project. Following off the back of Auntie Flo’s ‘Kabsa’, the duo’s ‘Gilgamesh’ EP is the fourth release for the label this year and continues to build upon Disco Halal’s successful trajectory.

The ‘Gilgamesh’ EP draws inspiration from the epic novel of the same name, the oldest story known to man. Leading with the title track, Simple Symmetry teams up with Mexican producer Inigo Vontier for a signature Shamanic chugger whilst one of their solo efforts ‘Fight’ is a string-heavy, psychedelic soundscape. Named after Gilgamesh’s faithful sidekick, ‘Enkidu’ continues this kaleidoscopic theme with Krautrock influences with Adam Port’s ‘Tulum By Night’ contrasting edit turns the record into a big room melody. The remix has already been heavily supported by Moscoman, Keinemusik, Âme and Dixon.

Based in Berlin, but firmly rooted in the diverse and forward-facing musical scene of Tel Aviv, Moscoman’s Disco Halal label hails from beneath the minarets of the Holy Land. The imprint exists to present a tight-knit and growing community of musicians and producers, each transmitting their unique musical identity, yet each united by a unique sensibility, as well as a harmonious balance of rhythm and experimentation.

Encompassing elements of downtempo, new-wave and alternative pop, stitched together with a leftfield dancefloor throb, Disco Halal’s back-catalogue, filled with efforts from the likes of Simple Symmetry, The Organism and Moscoman himself, has seen the imprint rapidly emerging from the once-overlooked nightlife and club scene of Tel Aviv into the worldwide spectrum.

The air was hot and thick making it hard to breathe in the small waiting room. She glanced up at the clock and then back down at her watch. She'd been waiting for a long time, what felt like hours and hours. But it had only been a few minutes. Maybe the heat was getting to her. That must be it. Each person that exited the room looked as if they were in a state of trance, as if they had been hypnotised. Something strange was taking place in that room and she wasn't sure she wanted to know exactly what. As she stood up and made to leave, her name resounded around the room on the tannoy. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to have a look...

Calypso Records founders Thomass Jackson & Iñigo Vontier set up their label as a way of shining a light on Latin American artists, however for their next release they hone in on Tel Aviv and four artists making waves in the Israeli city. Entitled Tel Aviv Flavors, the EP features tracks from Middle Sky Boom, Niv Ast, Naduve and our pick from Rina; rattling drums and erratic percussion over a deep rumbling bassline.
