A long walk was at the apex of most days; sometimes the route was the same, sometimes they took a punt. That was the beauty of living in the countryside, there was a never-ending supply of nature to explore. Of course, the woodland walks and far-reaching cornfields had become familiar after all these years of living here, but every now and then they'd stumble upon a hidden paradise.

Hot on the heels of Daniel Monaco & Sauvage World's EP earlier this month, San Francisco's Roam Recordings welcome Australian-born, New York-based producer Kate Stein. Marking her debut release, 'Scenic Byway' offers two original cuts that display Kate's knack for crafting hypnotic melodies and low rumbling bass lines, backed up by two remixes on the flip from Perel and Zillas On Acid.

During the first lockdown in Tel Aviv, Guy Shaked – also known as Takiru – decided to take his music to other musical dimensions and explore his production abilities in different genres and tempos. The result is “Voices of July”, a colourful EP, featuring three originals and three remixes, in which every tune has its special story and mood. 

Takiru is well known for his previous releases that received support from acclaimed artists such as Moscoman, Jenia Tarsol, Chaim, and many more, and now he is proud to present his debut release on the respected Lisbon-based label Karakter. The remixes were made with love by Rina & Benji, A-Tweed (SXDNS222/FREEDL029) and Tempura The Purple Boy. 

Premiered here, A-Tweed’s version of the most romantic track of the release. In his interpretation of “Je Taime”, the Italian producer brought the love theme to his world, soaking the original into his characteristic weirdness: Distinctive percussive elements and a throbbing bassline yield the danceability, while the ethereal vocals deliver an eerie and erotic atmosphere.

Playground Records is pleased to present “Swing Ride”, the 38th’s label reference by a dear friend of the house, the mighty Roe Deers. Almost two years after ‘Lazer in the Jungle’, his first vinyl release on our catalogue and with a bunch of hot releases on labels like Turbo Recordings and Futureboogie under his arm, the Lithuanian maverick is back with a brand new EP.

‘Swing Ride’ is a mysterious percussion song with crazy horns. It feels like the ‘Ship of Fools’ calling before setting sail, but It’s basically a club-ready track to be played in a proper dark and sweaty room.
‘Glass Around’ is a bit more raw, you might sense the expansive wave of a strong psychedelic punch. Finally, the third original track, ‘Autobahn 2002’, could work as a homage to the legendary German robots.

On the remix side, Multi Culti’s boss Thomas Von Party delivers a twisted narcotic version of ‘Swing Ride’, meanwhile Mexican geek ALF CHAMPION turns ‘Glass Around’ toward a dub-experimental mix.

Sometimes I find myself struggling to uncover whether you’re a lover without a tongue or a friend who’s just body. I could not understand how two people could meet so intimately full of fire, yet be at loss when the presence of terminology would hover, scrambling up from its cave of comfort, begging to be fed. Now I find that the uncertainty has itself become a new fire, and I loll in its cool desperation, wondering when the smoke will cease. 

'Derrumbes y Escaleras' is the first single to be taken from Mexico-based producers Iñigo Vontier & Theus Mago's first ever collaborative album. Alongside remixes from Zillas On Acid and Saiko, Bristol-based producer Chez De Milo’s take extends upon the original track, which draws inspiration from the Indian board game “Snakes and Ladders” as well as the hallucinogenic mushroom "psilocybe caerulescens", popularly known as "Derrumbe” and formerly used in pre-hispanic religious ceremonies. Chez De Milo expands upon the ancestral flutes and psychedelic spurs in the original track, converting the melody into distorted vocal chops that fly over the undercurrent of percussion.

Duro returns with "Derrumbes Y Escaleras", the first collaboration from Iñigo Vontier & Theus Mago's upcoming album. The single is inspired by the Indian board game "Snakes and Ladders" and the hallucinogenic mushroom "psilocybe caerulescens" popularly known as "Derrumbe". This mushroom is one of the most important species in the country and was formerly used in prehispanic religious ceremonies. The trip comes with remixes by Englishman Chez de Milo and US duo Zillas On Acid.

His opener here is "Derrumbes Y Escaleras". Instantly you feel the effect of deep bass, ancestral flutes and psychedelic melodies coursing through your system, while the inner voices guide you to the deepest part of your being. Chez de Milo follows with a solid, rumbling percussion base, intoxicated flutes and synths laden you to the next existential plane.

The nine-minute Zillas On Acid’s trip uses the bassline to keep you lucid and present, while the flutes, frenetic arpeggios and percussion create an inner chaos. Inspired by the Mexican rave scene of the 2000s, the "Saiko Mix" has a catchy bouncy bass, rolling percussion and acid sounds that feel like melted lasers coming out of the speakers.

Closing the EP is the B-Side "Zumo Di Batuca", an experimental break cut. As it progresses the vocals and synthetic sounds disintegrate and melt into a solid, cyclical sound mix that keeps you in a trance state.

Bernardo Barrera, one half of Los Fugazzi, but best known as Mufti, delivers two tracks full to the brim with guitar licks, analogue squelches, dark corners, creative juice and a generous dose of serotonin.

The title track, 'Mess My Mind' is a dark foray into sound with a frankly unhinged vocal, which evokes sleaze, sex, narcosis and madness, while 'Rutina', although keeping the pace, uses overdriven distorted guitars and sinister synth sounds to create a mood all of its own.

Propping up the originals with their own unique takes are Niv Ast and Middle Sky Boom, who will be joining the label for the first time.

Niv Ast ramps up the kick drum and brings out the animal noises for 'Rutina' in a hypnotic reworking, while taking a vocal snippet from the original and turning it into a chant, giving the mix a slightly heavier punch to the brooding original mix.

Middle Sky Boom works the arpeggiator on his remix of 'Mess my Mind', making use of the stuttering vocals and slicing guitar licks of the original, while creating a unique interpretation of Bernardo's track, restructuring and re-crafting Mufti's original, to deliver a paranoid yet quirk fuelled remix.
