The DifferentSound Podcast #283 welcomes Laura Van Hal! Dutch DJ/Producer Laura van Hal is a fast-growing name in the European techno community. Her sets are inspired by early 2010's techno and the many different dance floors she’s danced on over the years. Her intricate music selection provides strong, trippy and groovy DJ-sets that take her audience on a hypnotic, driving and energetic journey. Laura has been showcasing her sound and skills at various renowned events and clubs such as Vault Sessions, Awakenings, RSO Berlin and Rote Sonne. The result is no short of breath-taking, sharp as a knife and well, exhaustingly gratifying.

DifferentSound invites Laura Van Hal / Podcast #283

Sam Coates took to techno like a diligent pupil, falling in love with the genre through labels like CLR in the late '00s. It didn't take long for the student to surpass his proverbial teachers. Almost immediately, the Manchester native was putting out pitch-perfect, functional techno records with everything intricately balanced. The requisite move to Berlin only sealed his fate as a future techno luminary, and by now, based in Kyiv, he's one of techno's most reliable, yet exciting, workhorses. Setaoc Mass records (and those on his label, SK_eleven) are minimalist but colossal, deceptively simple but not easy to pull off. 

We've praised him in these pages for his "sense of economy—how to get the hardest impact out of just a few elements," and that's the idea behind his RA Podcast as well. Put together from records old and new, and intricately layered, Coates's mix is like a time-travelling wormhole connecting disparate eras from techno, and highlighting the genre's most timeless attributes: mechanistic rhythms, careful pacing, rudimentary melodies made out of the strangest sounds and, of course, the power of the bass drop. It's hard to imagine anything that sounds more capital-T techno than this mix, which is a high compliment. It's easy to hear why his records and DJ sets are only more in demand from techno heads across the geographical and generational spectrum.

Bosnian-born, Sweden-based producer and jockey Sev Dah has been carving a niche truly personal and distinctive into techno’s growingly standardized on and off-stage realm. Boss of his own imprint, Proletarijat, with releases for Mote-Evolver, Random Island or K S R under his belt, Sev has been pushing wares both entrancingly hi-NRG (a nod to the early Schranz heroes) and ruggedly abrasive. The result is an effervescing mishmash of rabid uptempo drives, screwed melodies and fiery rhythmic grids, ready to leave all ravers knocked askew.

Forward thinking in its conception rendered highly functional in its implementation, Border One’s music finds middle ground in an increasingly polarized musical climate for the genre; whether it be through his selection as a DJ or his technicality as a producer. 
Considering this, his release catalogue seems only appropriate.
