A Drink with Ghosts

The Overlook Hotel’s Gold Room was quiet, save for the faint clink of ice in Jack Torrance’s glass. He leaned against the polished bar, eyes glinting with a manic edge, staring at Lloyd the bartender.

“Another bourbon, Lloyd,” Jack slurred, his grin crooked. “This place… it’s got a way of gettin’ under your skin, don’t it?”

Lloyd, pale and sharp in his red jacket, poured smoothly, his face unreadable. “Yes, sir. The Overlook has its ways.” His voice was low, like a draft through a cracked window.

Jack chuckled, swirling the drink. “You ever feel it, Lloyd? The walls whisperin’? Tellin’ ya to… fix things?” His fingers tightened on the glass, knuckles white.

Lloyd’s eyes flicked up, steady, almost too still. “I’ve heard whispers, Mr. Torrance. They come with the job. You listen long enough, you start to answer.”

Jack laughed, sharp and hollow, echoing in the empty room. “Oh, I’m answerin’, Lloyd. I’m answerin’ loud and clear.” He downed the bourbon, the burn fueling the fire in his chest.

Lloyd wiped the counter, slow, deliberate. “Careful, sir. Some answers don’t let you go.”

Jack’s grin faltered, just for a second, as the lights flickered. The Overlook held its breath.

Today’s release is one that's very near and dear to our hearts, as it shines some light on the darkness we all experience within ourselves. Phil Bear tapped into a seriously deep, dark well of emotion for this piece, and we think many of you will find that it resonates with you on an intimate, personal level. "Save Me" is a deeply moving piece of raw artistic emotion and desperate expression that screams of authenticity, ripped directly from the heart of Phil Bear.

For many of us 'artsy folk', we're given the blessing and curse of feeling in an extreme way.. the emotional roller coaster ride tends to go up and down at steeper grades. When it comes to emotional distress, it’s said that “when it rains, it pours”, and I’m sure many of you know the broken down feeling where everything seems to be falling apart around you. Colors aren’t as bright as they used to be, and there’s a mental fog that fills us with a damp, stale darkness as heartbreak, loss of a loved one, and crippling self-loathing all seem to come crashing down on us at the same time. This is when we’re at our darkest, and, ironically enough, is when we create some of our most beautiful art.

“Save Me” takes us into the heart of an artist during one of these dark periods, after heartbreak and the loss of his canine best friend came in the same week. The melodic, entrancing sections represent that sadness, loneliness, and overall blue mood that are induced by the suffering, utilizing beautiful piano melodies and surging synths to create an atmosphere of melancholy. The pain can become all too familiar after a while, and we find ourselves so deep inside the harbor of sorrows that we just want to scream “SAVE ME!” to anyone who will listen. The song shifts here, facing the darkness within and blasting us with a heavy, dark dubstep drop that is reminiscent of old NiT GRiT. This song is a sonic representation of the internal battle where we want so badly for someone to save us from our pain, but realize that that isn’t possible. 

We hope you find some catharsis and emotional release when listening to this song, as it truly has the power to remove blockages and assist in “setting yourself free”, as Phil Bear puts it. Please support the artist by sharing the song and following him!

When Notixx’s heavy bass aesthetic collided with Brother Bear’s club music, something beautiful happened. Dusty Bits emerged as a healthy hybrid of bass house and breaks with eclectic influences varying from Baltimore club to dubstep, breaking down the barriers of bass music as we know it. The Buffalo-based DJ/production duo comprised of Ryan Sinatra and Jake Broffman have already proven they’re a force to be reckoned with.
