Last spotted on Dirtybird brandishing a switch-flipping, warehouse-busting acid house remix of Kill Frenzy’s massive ‘Make That Booty Clap’, ZDS, AKA Nat Self, returns with his very own full EP. Ladies and gentlemen, make way for ‘Hands’. 

Perfecting his dancefloor dynamism for many years on labels such as Made To Play, Sound Pellegrino, Suara, Defected and Dirtybird, ZDS has primed each of these three cuts with nothing but the party in mind. Each one comes with its own story, let’s get handy… 

‘Hands’: A track to bring sunshine and light to the dancefloor, something to lift you. Nat actually made this specifically to mix with VonStroke’s beautiful ‘Can’t Wait’. Claude loved it so much he signed it as the A-side. Nat’s been road-testing it all summer to great effect. In his own words, he “nearly peed his pants at the reaction to it in Kazantip.”

‘Bang Ze Box’: Ghetto house with a classy polish of timeless house funk, ‘Bang Ze Box’ is undiluted, darkroom audio deviousness. Jesse Rose, Heidi and Eats Everything are already card carrying fans. The minute you hear its infectiously undulating bass groove, you will be too. 

‘Drop’: VonStroke recognised the slinky, sexy bass mischief of this third cut. Deep, penetrative and smothered in sub bass, there’s a subtle sense of euphoria by way of a steadily rising synth line that neatly counters the nagging sea of low end riffage. Its already been receiving some great early reactions and something tells us there’ll be much more by the time ‘Drop’ gains the momentum it deserves. 

Three superb cuts from one of the UK’s most respected house producers. Usually you’re asked to throw up some hands and show some love. Well this time we’re throwing you some ‘Hands’. Big love.

Its been 6 years since Danilo Plessow aka Motor City Drum Ensemble first emerged on the scene with his debut 12inch released on his own MCDE Recordings imprint.
Appropriately titled "Raw Cuts", the two tracks would start of a series of raw house jams Danilo made in his studio using old school samplers and drum machines,
a sound that at the time was far away from being status quo.
Having been heavily influenced by Soul, Jazz, House and Techno emerging from both the Motor City and beyond, Danilo found his signature sound - sample-based, raw,
emotional and mature tracks.
MCDE released two more "Raw Cuts" twelve inches in the coming years and it wouldn't be wrong to call them modern house classics - each of the records found support from all over the globe, from Moodymann to Gilles Peterson, and especially the last record of the series (Raw Cuts 5 & 6) was just everywhere in the year 2010.

What better way to end a concept series than to invite some people for remixing those tracks? People that inspired him to do this music in the first place:
Marcellus Pittman of 3 Chairs fame, Mike Huckaby, one of Detroit`s house heroes and synth nerd per excellence, plus lastly Recloose, whose unique approach to the Detroit sound has been a favorite of Danilo for years.

With a package this strong we will not bore you with more praise - just listen and enjoy.

Nina Kraviz launches her трип (pronounced ‘trip’) label with a double-EP compilation entitled ’The Deviant Octopus’, featuring a pair of brand new productions from Kraviz alongside material from Terrence Dixon, emerging talent Parrish Smith & Bjarki, and veteran producers Exos & Steve Stoll.

The idea for трип has been gestating for some time with Nina Kraviz, an avid crate-digger and frequenter of numerous second-hand record stores, who has long wanted to begin a label of her own which would build on some of the principles of her beloved 90s techno labels in terms of attitude and aesthetics, whilst looking for forward-thinking modern productions that reflect her core tastes for idiosyncratic electronic music.

The art and title of 'The Deviant Octopus' comes from a single-sentence scenario dreamt up by Kraviz: “Without a moment's notice an Octopus appeared and devoured everyone in sight”. Supplied with this scenario, artist Tombo rendered his own unique visualization for the artwork that adorns the release sleeve. It's Kraviz's own nod to the labels that inspire her and grab her attention while digging through second hand records, the best of which were imbued with the unique personality of the people behind them. This extends to the sound Kraviz intends for трип: dusky, divergent and trippy music to stimulate brains, dreams and fantasies.

In this respect ‘The Deviant Octopus’ is a perfect introduction: Kraviz herself is represented on the tracklist by two new tracks that take up the mantle of last year’s Mr Jones EP by returning to the vocal-flecked hypnotic techno that marked out that release. Complimenting those are two new cuts from a true master of hallucinatory off-kilter techno, Terrence Dixon in his Population One guise.

Joining them will be a pair of names from the techno pantheon who have been huge influences on Kraviz: with a career that’s taken in releases on Synewave, Trax, Novamute and Richie Hawtin’s early-90s Probe Records, Steve Stoll has been mining his own variant on techno and acid minimalism for over twenty years, heading up the Proper NYC label and releasing under various pseudonyms, such as Cobalt, of which Kraviz has been a long-term fan. His counterintuitively titled ‘Pop Song’ sits alongside a 13-minute 90s techno excursion from Reykjavik’s Exos - the only previously-released cut (originally appearing on Thule Records sub-label Plast Trax in 1998) - together illustrating that трип will also live up to its name in the geographical sense: showcasing great music from historically vibrant electronic music scenes outside of the usual Detroit-Berlin axis.

With Kraviz looking to build a small repertory of talent around трип, this first release also makes room for two newer names: Bjarki is an Icelandic talent to keep a firm eye on, who drew Kraviz’s attention in a chance meeting after a gig at Copenhagen’s Culturebox club, after which he passed her a collection of mind-bendingly odd demos; while Parrish Smith is a talented Netherlands-based producer whose short yet impactful sketch ‘1.0 / 8.0 Afrika Genocide’ brings the second 12” to a bewitching close.

All tracks on ‘The Deviant Octopus’ will feature on Nina Kraviz’s DJ Kicks compilation, out in January 2015 on !K7 Records.

MOTE033 :: SHIFTED :: RAZORS EP
Following the release of his critically acclaimed album, Crossed Paths, Shifted’s next release on Mote-Evolver is the incendiary Razors EP.
The EP opens with title track ‘Razors’ a six minute odyssey. Sounds are layered one on top of another and create a strictly cyclical structure. Shaking, rattling sounds helicopter overhead, syncopated noise unfurls in the mid-ground and underneath hypnotic beats are laid down relentlessly. It’s a dizzying combination.
Following on from this disorientation ‘Over’ ratchets up the BPM and rules it with an iron fist. This is merciless techno that’s full of intelligent details. Out of nowhere jangling blips and bleeps collide with feral bass. Shifted is no stranger to creating dance floor optimised cuts and ‘Over’ is the sound of a producer with a very finely honed craft.
The flip side begins with ‘Bloodless’ a title that suggests cold hearted, zestless deeds and a track that is ironically anything but bloodless. Rendered in twisted beats and synthesised noise there’s a cautionary tale to be heard, a warning about shiny surfaces that conceal deadening agendas.
The EP closes with the unsettlingly ‘Trouble’. It’s just as likely to have you listening reclined, with your eyes closed, as it is to leave you slightly paranoid looking over your shoulder. The palette is stripped back giving rise to psychologically charged atmospherica. ‘Trouble’ leaves you with far more questions than it answers.
Across the ‘Razors EP’ Shifted displays the range and diversity of his productions with refined electronic experiments next to broken beats and strange atmospherica aside lethal dance cuts.
