Threads Radio - July 2021 Part 1

Well it's not all from London I know, but like many a scene, London has often been a processing point for what's being generated elsewhere. In this case, very much courtesy of Frankfurt, Detroit, Rotterdam, New York and of course the UK itself. This is a fairly close recreation of the regular sets I played at VFM, Dead By Dawn, Eurobeat 2000, Institute Of Goa, Helter Skelter and various squat parties (Spiral Tribe, Bedlam) in and around London. Hard banging techno leading up to some of the decent first instances of gabba.  It's at a point where things were quickly splintering off from the highly successful UK Rave Hardcore sound of 92 and reconnecting with a harder updated version of what had previously been coming out of Detroit, Brooklyn, Belgium and Holland around 89/90/91. Looking back, though it seemed such a very separate sound from breakbeat hardcore, with the distance of time they were both very much shades of the same rave. Ah the memories….

From the new Sebastian Mullaert EP released on Josh Wink's OVUM Recordings on June 30, 2014.
I made Chant de Paris the day before my first solo live show at the club showcase in Paris, hence the name for the track and EP. 

Release Note : 

Over the last 17 years, Sebastian Mullaert has had a long and distinguished career as one half of hardware experimentalist duo Minilogue, with releases on Cocoon, Wagon Repair and Crosstown Rebels. Now opting to focus more on solo endeavors, he hits the ground running with his sublime Ovum debut. Clocking in at a hefty 16 minutes in length, the title track is a heady excursion which flirts with reverb-drenched ouds and meandering keyboard scales, conveying an air of Arabic mystique. An array of acidic synths move in and out of focus, whilst skittering hi-hats and ride cymbals slowly build upon rafts of kinetic energy, all programmed with a deft, organic touch.In an impressive display of versatility, Mullaert promptly flips the vibe from Berlin basement to Ibiza sunset with Recapturing the Radical Self. It starts off similarly enough, with brooding 303 squelches and sharp claps, but slowly ascends into a state of full-on Balearic bliss. For our next @DarkScienceElectro premiere, we dive into the latest release from French producer @Djedjotronic. 

For their 0100010th release, @CPUrecords bring us the powerful work of @Djedjotronic. This four track EP is as straight-forward Electro as it gets. I had a hard time selecting a track to premiere but eventually landed on '#1#0#2'. Clocking in at 130 BPM, this track absolutely glistens with the kind of Electro you have learned to expect from both Djedjotronic as well as the consistent output of @CPUrecords. This track features steady rhythms with an almost motorik feel, driven by custom samples via the Analog Rytm. The brilliantly spaced-out synth sounds in the song were made using Roland SH-01 and the Access Virus. This is one you don't want to miss. The record is available for pre-order now and will officially be released on November 23, 2018.

Carl A. Finlow is a man who needs no introduction as he has been a cornerstone of Electro music since his first release in 1993. After countless EPs and a number of LPs on various labels, Carl brings his gorgeous, intelligent brand of Electro music to @2020VisionRecordings with a new 4 track EP called 'Electronic'.

The song picked to premiere for @DarkScienceElectro is the final composition on the record called 'Flaw'. The track was composed using no physical hardware, using only able Ableton, for the create process and a Allen & Heath desk for mixing purposes. 'Flaw' is complete with beats that would make the late great Prince proud while firmly rooted with layers of electronic trickery. The entire release is an absolute slam dunk and is highly recommended by @DVSNME

Jun Kamoda is an artist who has never stuck to one groove. Making beats and MCing under hip-hop moniker Illreme for 15 years, the Japanese producer more recently moved into gorgeous dancefloor territory, releasing a hugely-acclaimed album via Black Acre as well as other outings on Mister Saturday Night and Mall Grab’s Steel City Dance Discs. Playful productions of his like 'Blind Disco' have really impressed, leading us to commission him for what is now one of our favourite mixes in our series. Arriving on his own newly-minted Jun Records label, 'Escape The Night' is a new two-track 12" exploring Japanese City pop influences and sunshine-soaked melodies grafted onto a house beat. Sampling a vocal from City pop singer Hitomitoi, we're premiering the title track below, an infectious club cut with breezy chords optimised for eyes-closed, blissful raving.

For this @DarkScienceElectro premiere, we take a listen to a forthcoming EP by @CYRKmusic on @burialsoil

On their new 12“, Obsession EP, Berlin-based duo CYRK expand on their unique permutation of sci-fi-inspired electro. The title track is another fine example of the brooding and cinematic atmosphere they have championed lately. Recalibration ups the ante significantly. It’s a fast-paced and tense dance floor smasher replete with screams and powerful howls by Berlin-based singer Sunru. In his remix, veteran producer The Hacker slows down the tempo and turns the frantic original into a slow-chugging lesson in new beat intensity. DJ LOUI on the other hand, strips away the layers of pads and focuses on the bass line of Obsession, turning it into a bare-bones rhythm track with an 80s twist.
