As the name suggests, the Nursery was founded to provide talented producers with a creative platform on which they can further develop and perfect their skill set. With the release of his four-track Hyper EP, it is really safe to say that Antonio De Angelis not only picked up on this challenge, but already raised the bar for everyone to follow. With this powerful 4 EP in De Angelis’ signature stomping-but-melodic warehouse oriented sound, there’s no doubt these tracks are going to hype-up dance floors for quite some time to come.

On the fourth EP I am expressing 3 techno cuts, highly inspired by the dancefloor. Groovy and danceable yet profound and emotional. They are followed by a signature remix from Rene Wise. I met him on the dance floor at Eerste Communie. This record is a homage to the organization and beautiful people I can call family. 

Let the dance floor be shifted into a collective oceanic feeling.

Who are you? What do you do? 
I grew up with music, music has been around as long as I can remember. In a later stage of my life I completed my music education. By reflecting the music I received from my family into my professional dj life I learned a lot about music and life. But I am aware that I am still able to learn and experience so much because the world of music is endless and you can always discover something new. 

If you were an animal, which one would you be? 
I love the panda, but if I wanted to be born as an animal, I would prefer to be an underwater creature. Because there are still unexplored oceans and that is another way of life. So my choice would be the dolphin, which is both intelligent and very capable of analyzing danger. 

 If music wouldn’t exist, which job would you like to do?
If music wouldn’t exist, I would definitely want to be the person who created the characters in cartoons or animated films. It would be fun to bring these characters to life and embellish every child's imagination.

The B2B of my dreams is Oscar Mulero.

Your podcast in one word? 
If I had to describe my mix with one word it would be: “Hot”

What better way to celebrate Kennedy's half a century on this third rock from the sun than a new five-track EP on Asymmetric. The title track 'Tides Indefinite' kicks the EP off with its deceptively simple synth rise and fall before an archetypal Asymmetric track in the shape of 'Cartesian Form'. Next up is a darker tale in the form of 'Unrest' which pitches driving layered bass cycles against a constantly moving 909 backdrop. 'Labyrinth Walls' is nothing short of six minutes of breakbeat sonic joy in which to get lost with no need to escape before 'Amaranthine' brings the EP to a close; the sort of track that shouldn't really come to an end, it ebbs and flows like tides indefinite...

When two musicians intensively work together for a period of time, at some point the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. If Paul Boex and Dave Miller hadn’t already reached that status under their Abstract Division moniker, they certainly have now, with the release of Midnight Ensemble, their first full length album.

Those who have followed the duo since their early days of playing dj-sets together, know that it’s hard to define their style anywhere beyond techno or even electronic music, as it is ever evolving and always dependent on the time of the day or night. When listening to this album, the resemblance between their unpredictable selection behind the decks and the eclectic range of subgenres on this album is more obvious than ever before.

Midnight Ensemble could be interpreted as an ode to nightlife; a reminiscence of all that happens between dusk and dawn, captured and compressed into about one hour of music. An hour in which they so delicately time their changing of styles and tempos, always reading the room and always being one step ahead of the crowd.

This album is a reflection of that skill, starting its journey with soothing, mood-setting ambient, followed by timeless pieces of Detroit and dubtechno. A daring electro cut provide a refreshing break from the four to the floor tradition, only to be followed by the stripped down sound the duo is so comfortable with.

The final minutes consist of experimental breaks, one last banger to pull out the last bits of energy that is left and a beautiful outro, which concludes the all-nighter vibe. There are no open endings, it doesn’t make you want to stay in the dark forever. Rather it makes you want to close your eyes one last time before walking outside to see the sun come up again before going home, overwhelmed and satisfied.

EERSTE COMMUNIE #047 ABSTRACT DIVISION

Regis and Function's first mix in over 10 years is a unique paean to Silent Servant, heavy on unreleased material.

When it came time for RA to compile our Albums of the 2010s, one record with a tauntingly limited availability of 500 copies was never in doubt: Sandwell District's era-defining 'Feed-Forward'. Encompassing Karl O'Connor (Regis), Peter Sutton (Female), David Sumner (Function) and Juan Mendez (Silent Servant), Sandwell District had the underground in a vice grip for over a decade.

The collective imploded in 2013, with Sumner and O'Connor's relationship appearing beyond repair. And yet, an unlikely second phase is here, featuring imminent comeback LP 'End Beginnings' and their return to the RA Podcast after 16 years. In 2023, the trio of Function, Regis and Silent Servant had been performing and laying down new material before the latter's shock death last January. It's in the shadow of loss that this unique mix was forged.

Founded in 2002 as a spiritual sister to seminal Downwards, Sandwell truly began to hit its straps in the late '00s, as shadow-stalking cuts sliced through clubland orthodoxy like a switchblade. In parallel, the label's artwork—a noir recombination of Burroughs cut-ups, DIY zines and arthouse amour that Silent Servant made his own—helped fortify a movement which placed an aesthetic premium on grit, grain and sadism.

By the early 2010s, this fixation on the dark arts had utterly permeated the mood inside techno's masonic temples. Labels like Blackest Ever Black, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Avian and Modern Love were in their pomp, razorwire legends like Severed Heads and Chris & Cosey benefited from second winds, and it was briefly a jailable offence to not have a press photo in black and white. 'Feed-Forward' was the exceptional coronating statement.

RA.978 features a stack of unheard recordings from each of the trio, as well as close allies Stefanie Parnow and Tropic of Cancer, while also gathering many of Silent Servant's all-time favourite songs, including Psychic TV, Grace Jones and Galaxie 500. It's a strikingly vulnerable listen, one without many parallels on the Podcast. We're glad to run it. – Gabriel Szatan

On the flip, Passing is built on a deceivingly simple hook, sparkled with drones over a pounding 909. Ascend brings it all home with a gradually evolving hook, stripped down to the bare bones yet still offering a powerful crescendo.
