Two musical threads weave through the collected works of Andrew Bayer. One thread gave us the downtempo masterclass of 2013’s ‘If It Were You We’d Never Leave’ and the brilliant 'In My Last Life' LP. The other thread produced arena-sized anthems like 2014’s ‘Once Lydian’, his epic 'Super Human' with Asbjørn and the club remix project 'In My Next Life'. 

From the introspective to the explosive, these records are our community’s shared soundtrack: we’ve all got a favourite Andrew Bayer record. But they have come in so many forms and styles.

It leaves us asking the question, who exactly is Andrew Bayer? It’s a question he’s asked himself.

“Since day one, I have always struggled with how to present myself. I love making these experimental home listening albums of electronica and indie sounds, but I also love DJing and making trance bangers. On my last album I had to remix the album in full after it was released to make the worlds fit. This time around I wanted to capture all the breadth, depth and tension within that duality under one single project” - Andrew Bayer

‘Duality’ brings these two creative threads together under one album for the first time since his debut album 'It's Artificial'. 

Crafted over three years, Bayer is joined by an eclectic cast of collaborators old and new. ‘Duality’ pt. 1 explores Bayer’s passion for downtempo and indie-pop, while ‘Duality’ pt. 2 takes on his forward-thinking trance and progressive sond. Both are tied by Bayer's unique vision, a shared sensibility and same group of collaborators. Today, you can hear a sample from each side: ‘Equal’ (with Asbjørn), and ‘Midnight’ (with Alison May).

This track was written and recorded in a single day. It is a short "what if" thesis asking "What do acoustic gut string guitar, vocal, hammered dulcimer, AC-30/Ebo/Tele sound like with judicious amounts of spectral bluring and some Csound granular opcodes". Inspired by a conversation...a long and meaningful one, late at night. 

Sometimes conversations become a place, that in memory at least, you can return too. Listening to this I can remember where I was sitting, and the way I held the phone and exactly how I felt on this very hushed night. 

I took this photograph in Erskine in Australia (short drive inland from the coastal town of Lorne). It was taken on a 5DmII using a 17mm 1.4 L lense and I did minor color correcting/film grain/vignetting in Magic Bullet. It seemed to really suit this piece.

With a great tweak for driving melodies and chord progressions, we see them make them both take a twist on this beauty. 

Keisuke Hara, a producer that you have seen with us in the past at PHW returns as he delivers in full flare with his melodic interpretation. It’s built through exciting harmonies and energy that is to take us on a proggy journey from start to finish. It’s rock solid as always from this truly talented producer that we hope you all continue to take to your hearts. We are over the moon to see him back with this beauty! 

Keisuke Kimura makes his debut on the label, though he’s been on our radar for some time, and we are glad to see him join us with his twists and turns made through this production. With a full on doze of energy created here, he swings freely here to take us places. It has great mood and spiced up melodic parts to give us that summer-ish feel we seek for. It’s as good as anything he’s made in the past, and we hope this is a start of a long time journey together on the label. 

We hope you will enjoy this super fresh melodic release as much as we do, be ready for some more Japanese super powers!
