Passarella Death Squad return with the first of 3 releases to be taken from their forthcoming album ‘What We Are, You Shall Be’.

Taking the album’s title track to form the basis of this first EP, the original version is deep and pulsating with haunting vocals from Passarella’s talented Emilie Albisser.

“The body is a basic form of pleasure”

Alongside the original are three remixes from three unique & wide-ranging artists. 

First up is is Düsseldorf’s Tolouse Low Trax, the solo project by Detlef Weinrich who is also a member of the group Kreidler. He delivers a raw and more experimental take on ‘What You Are, You Shall Be’ with dark and atmospheric intentions.

Taking the original in a completely different direction is Italian producer and DJ, Samantha Togni. She is the founder of Boudica and resident at London’s Torture Garden. Here she presents a slamming Techno-driven workout that’s primed for dark warehouse nights. 

Closing the EP is CLAIR, following on from the success of her debut album ‘Earth Mothers’ described by The Quietus as a “stunningly intricate sound world”, this Glasgow-based producer delivers her debut remix. For this piece the experimentalist weaves a sinister sonic tail of seduction, using slithers of snakes, synths and voice notes. ‘Cruising for attention’ is inspired by a true story of an artist & family man living a double life by using a meme caricature as a platform to bait multiple women secretly on the side. CLAIR wanted to highlight the dangers of connecting with strangers on the internet and the rise of male predators taking advantage of the pandemic situation.

With artwork once again from Danny Passarella the EP offers another key release from Passarella Records.

Semispecific Ensemble is a somewhat sprawling project that encompasses many passing interests, explorations and research. It exists as both a spontaneous live act and a painstaking studio practice. A collective celebration and a solitary obsession. An organic expression and a digital manipulation.

Live, I don't think we're ever really the same group twice - a constantly shifting line up of players and guests, a roaming pallet of styles, sounds and ever evolving intentions. Yes, there are some jazz and ambient elements but we're definitely not a jazz band or ambient act. Friends have described a "techno button", detonated at festival sets aimed at triggering fields of wild eyes and flailing bodies, but few DJs are likely to lend their full support (tip!).

Over time, like layer upon layer of scribbled Biro, these ongoing iterations gradually began to form a wider picture; a fragmented and sprawling universe that I thought was worth starting to capture and share.

Everyone Is Making It Up is our first full attempt to do that.
Recorded in one day as a series of improvisations in a hastily organised session between the waves of lockdown of 2020 then smelted and reformed through far-too-many hours of studio experimentation like some morphing primordial sonic goo. Over the course of the five pieces of music, four texts , one video and various artworks collected within the accompanying zine, Everyone Is Making It Up is messy and untamed, naïve, imprecise, short-sighted and long-winded but I am proud of it and hope you can give it a chance to lure you in to its world.

It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. The composer reminisces, “I bought a small baked clay flute, picked out from a bushel basket of similar cheap tourist souvenirs. Its three indiscriminately punched holes emitted a series of eight exotic pitches. Five metal coffee cans struck with the rubber eraser ends of two pencils, and six Pyrex bowls tuned with water (the traditional Indian ‘Jhalaturanga’’) to the pitches of the clay flute, completed my ensemble” (liner notes, audio CD, Second Evening Art, #AG1964).

Trio had its premiere in concert version on October 6, 1963 at the legendary Old Spaghetti Factory in North Beach, San Francisco, with the composer on Mexican clay flute. In a rare music review written after leaving New York, Lou Harrison wrote of the Aptos performance a month later, “It is fascinating to hear Hughes’ natural concert professionalism commingling in this work with the earlier wild-and-woolyness of the West-Coast percussion school of the thirties and forties (Cowell, Cage, Strang, and myself) to which it seems to owe a little of its impulse” (Lou Harrison, “Coffee Can Concert in Aptos,” music review, San Francisco Chronicle, Saturday Nov. 9, 1963).

Me and Ben thought it would be fun to play a long DJ set together at Globus, the upstairs floor at Tresor in Berlin. 
We last played together (as Frequency 7) in May 2013. This time we played a ‘back to back’ DJ set, I’m pretty sure playing 2 tracks each for the whole six and a half hour set. All we had in mind beforehand was to start with some Dub and ‘see where it goes’. 

It was a lot of fun so we wanted to share the recording with you.

London’s Passarella Death Squad return again this April with music on the ever-exciting Passarella Records. Led by Danny Passarella, the reputable group has previously released on Perc Trax, The Republic Of Desire and Days Of Being Wild, while also manning one of London’s top cult clothing brands.

Passarella Death Squad have described their own music as ‘a diverse combination of contemporary electronica and haunting beautiful songs’ and their ‘Creatures’ EP is exactly that. Joining them on remix duties are Dext and Fool’s Gold producer Nightwave, as well as Nation and MOS affiliate D’Marc Cantu.

‘Creatures’ presents a sinister, yet infectious bassline groove resting under pumping drums and the maleficent vocals of Emilie Albisser. Glasgow’s Nightwave’s version offers heavier drums, with the melody split between metallic synths and malleable sine waves, while D’Marc Cantu delivers unyielding techno drum grooves with squelchy acid bass.
