David's Roses (Reworked)

Premiered during Digital Nonya Sayang, Nonya Cantik is a modern rework of a ribald patun (Malayan Poetry) transcribed by Benjamin Ang's grandfather.

The candid subject of a man infatuated with a courtesan, evoked the Language of Toronto's strained masculinity strip-club anthems.

To let younger audiences have a frame of reference, I turned the original instrumentation from its traditional form into contemporary production standards and avoid essentializing certain sounds as obiang Malayan 'culture' (or whatever culture means).

The Morning Routine is conjured with the concept of the everyday morning get around. Sounds samples of tooth brushing, flushing toilets, chewing on toasts and cars whizzing past are several of the extensive collection of sounds contributing to the flow of the piece.

The idea of adding strings popped up halfway through the "fleshing out" of the demo, and I'm glad I followed through with that idea :)
