VARIOUS ARTISTS – PLANET LOVE: EARLY TRANSMISSIONS 1991-95

Having previously celebrated the deep and colourful world of late ‘80s and early ‘80s Italian house via the popular Welcome To Paradise compilation series, Safe Trip has now turned its attention to the roots and formative years of trance music.

Planet Love: Early Transmissions 1991-95 showcases the roots and formative years of trance via 13 loved-up, psychedelic, colourful, melodious and surprisingly varied dancefloor experiments from Europe, Australia and the United States.

The compilation includes pioneering proto-trance and early trance tracks from the likes of Hawke (AKA influential San Francisco producer Gavin Hardkiss), Epilson 9, Spooky, Oliver Lieb, Holy Ghost Inc, Morgan Wild (an outfit whose members included early NYC techno titan Damon Wild), Mijk van Dijk, Glam and Paul van Dyk.

Packed with must-have cuts, slept-on gems and sought-after rarities, Planet Love: Early Transmissions 1991-95 maintains the loved-up, listenable vibe of Welcome to Paradise while broadening its musical horizons. It is not a definitive history of trance music’s early years, but rather a colourful, life-affirming celebration of the varied strands that came together to create one of dance music’s most popular and enduring styles.

Usually inhabiting the large crossing between progressive trance and 90's tech house, Von GDK is coming through with a mean streak of sci-fi propulsion and smooth dancefloor pressure, pushed into heads-down interzones of tunnelling throb and gloomy melodic flourish.
Curve spirit is a condensate of the French producer’s psychedelic scope in its rawest form. The EP takes shape in a three tracker oozing with his sound signature, complete with a remix of Berlin's cutie troublemaker 131bpm.

'Liquid Pharaoh' comes as contemplative scape of deep trance and proggy rhythms with ethereal atmospheres and notions of introspection for a definite meditative club use.

What lies on the terrain for which no map exists? Tifra has volunteered to take the plunge and find out. For the 28th record on Haŵs, the Dutch DJ/producer steps up to the frontline with ‘Terra Incognita’ – a primitive force to be reckoned with that reveres the hypnotising, ominous unknown. Four investigational tracks unify the checkpoints, wandering through themes of 00s/90s leftfield house, prog, and continuous, undulating grooves. The EP sets sail with ‘Invoke Hysteria’, scavenging through malevolent, hostile waters and a caution of pad synths, drums and agitated melodies.

Relenting onwards, ‘Serpent’ slinks into a mellow respite, moving slowly and deliberately like a snake in the moonless dark. Deep, resonant synths coil around the percussive heartbeat of the track, weaving together velvet layers of bass, wind instruments and steady, surrendering exhalations of breath.

The titular ‘Terra Incognita’ hoists up the anchor and yields to the trance of the summoning liquid night. Repetitive melodies form the contours of its shifting course, moulding a ritualistic rhythm under the dissolving face of the sky. 

Admo steps up to the wheel for the remix, smoking out the initial perfume of the atmospherics into a new, tough brutality. Hauling the track out of its initial spacey orbit, he re-embellishes it with dour synths, drums and a primal, subterranean growl.

Some say that there is no worse poverty than that of connection, so why not be the first to take the risk, break the divide and find out what lies beyond the veil? Otherwise, make your own guesses, and then let them guess who you are.

Scientific Observations From The Safe Trip Institute

It’s been all go at the Safe Trip Institute of late, with a visiting professor of Cosmic Numerology and Solar-Psychic Channelling joining us in the laboratory to conduct intense analysis on more audio artefacts. Dr Prins Thomas is currently on secondment from the Full Pupp College of Scandi-Science in Oslo and has provided his own aural interpretations of audio held in the file ST012, colloquially known as “Tulipa Moves”. This file was said to be the work of an associate fellow of the Institute known only as “Darling”.

We have subsequently carefully considered his musical re-configurations, which can be found in file ST016, and would like to offer the following observations:

• His extensive experimentations on the artefact known as “Kiss The Glass” tie in closely to his exploration of astronomic numerology. By adding together the various numbers used to represent specific musical elements contained in the recording – synthesizer leads, TB-303 style’ acid motifs, machine drums and so on – we arrived at a startling total: 84626852. Coincidentally this number is also the given codename for one of the galaxy’s most confusing stars.

• Dr Thomas’s other re-framing (of ST012 artefact 05, “The M Song”) is even more ear catching and eye-opening. We observe that the echoing electronic note sequences, chiming motifs and shuffling rhythm represents the transfer of data between two points; one above the surface of the Earth, the other within its hollow interior. This is a significant breakthrough on many levels.

Scientific Observations From The Safe Trip Institute

Our latest bulletin is aimed at all colleagues of the Safe Trip Institute scattered around the globe. We invite your comments and observations on the enclosed audio artefacts: file number ST017.

Two associate fellows of the Institute, Darling and Ben Penn, brought these aural communications to our attention during a recent visit to our laboratory. Having performed analysis we offer the following observations for your consideration.

• Recording ST017-A (colloquially known as “Sierra”): This artefact, as presented by visiting fellow Darling, appears to be an audio representation of his personality. We examined in particular the rhythmic “bump”, the undulating sound of the bass notes and the rising nature of the accompanying electronic musical elements. Through typical “Phrenology” techniques we conclude that he is an outgoing person of possible extra-terrestrial origin who enjoys dancing to futuristic sounding music.

• Recording ST017-B (hereby referred to as “Trouble”): Our associate Ben Penn brought this particular musical soundscape to our attention. Our resident ethnomusicologist explains that certain structures and sound approaches can be traced back to remote, uninhabited islands in the Indonesian archipelago. Having run the recording through our patented spectrogastrometer, we believe that Penn has been communicating with non-humanoid lifeforms using a combination of futuristic mathematical formulas, shimmering electronic sounds, unearthly aural textures, heavy percussion and edible ideas.
