soundsystem steppers to experimental bass music and otherwise business. Exclusive productions and versions from the ones like T-Jah, Bukkha, Beam Up, Jah Schulz, Dub Across Borders, ToniWobble and many many more are ready to get unleashed. Mighty Ishan Sound AKA Cris Ebdon returns to ZamZam for his second outing.  The young master of UK steppers & dubwise experimentation arrives after several phenomenal releases including double-packs on Hotline and Peng! Sound and a profile that continues to rise in the international sound system community through his increasingly intense touring schedule and ever-closer collaboration with mic-phenomenon Rider Shafique.

“Rush On The Tonic” is a bruising 75 bpm killer that sees Ishan in minimalist dancehall mode.  A stripped kick-snare combination pulse drives the sparse riddim, hi hats and shakers adding subtle movement and tension.  Signature analog keys and flutes duel and intertwine in hypnotic style & fashion, while spring reverb shocks and splashes cut through from a distance and analog pulses bleep into sentience.  This one is all restraint, coiled power and subterranean menace.

ZamZam’s resident wrecking crew Alter Echo & E3 return the favor of Ishan Sound’s massive “Warning Dub” remix with a B side version primed for steppers dances.  75 bpm smacks to 150 with a power stepper true to the vibe of the original, but full charge with ricocheting percussion, lacerating snares, hollowed-out bass-warp, sample archaeology and even thicker atmospherics.  Duck!!

Scotch Bonnet Records revels in the sheer breadth of reggae and dancehall for their second daringly diverse Puffers Choice compilation. Following the success of 2016’s volume 1, the label arm of Glasgow’s Mungo’s HiFi has selected more cream cuts from their globe-trotting link-ups
 
celebrating sound system culture. Once again, each track comes vetted and endorsed by the Scotch Bonnet team as prime examples of their work.
The album starts with the beguiling, mellow tones of late great Rasta singer Bim Sherman. Lightning and Thunder is a Mungo’s remix of a vocal supplied by master producer/engineer Adrian Sherwood. Next up is French collective Subactive’s aquatic dub imagining of Follow Me by UK Garage/Grime project Wolves, featuring the voice of Bo* Johnson.
Another veteran revisits his past when hypnotic Jamaican deejay Supercat straddles Chief Rockas’ update of the classic Gunshot riddim for a reprise of “the Don Dada’s” 1982 hit Dance Inna New York. The vibes then travel bang up to date with a sparse Mungo’s fix of ethereal singer-songwriter Nem’s 2017 eco-breakout Purest Force.
Jamaican chanter Isha Bel pays tribute to her faith and follicles during Locks, given a belly-battering bass blend by Aquarius. The A side closes with a continuation of the Rasta theme. General Jah Mikey, channelling Burning Spear for his own Ites Green and Gold, rides a deft digital riff by bald-head New Zealand-based super-producer Naram.
The B side kicks off with a meeting of reggae’s finest from the city of Leeds. Danny T and Tradesman build an industrial-strength base for anti-violence lament Up Deh: a rare vocal outing from Iration Steppas’ Mark Iration. Then it’s time for Poland’s Dreadsquad to ease the pressure with swinging one- drop vibraphone instrumental Space.
JA meets “Glasgae” for Feel Good, an uplifting collab between Jamaican singer Skari and Scottish producer Escape Roots. Fans of Prince Fatty covering Kraftwork on the previous comp will rate vintage reggae voice Earl Sixteen, wrapping his pristine pipes around Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart, helmed hauntingly by Capitol 1212.
Scotch Bonnet’s own Thomas Stalawa gets everyone marching to a beat inspired by Steely and Clevie’s Dem Bow, as dangerous Spanish emcee Ponchita Peligros demands all in attendance Run the Calypso. The album ends with a request from un-categorisable Israeli collective Trillion featuring General G that puffers choose wisely - via anti-cigarette missive No Nicotine.
The Scotch Bonnet crew think you’ll agree: Puffers Choice volume 2 continues the bass-heavy balance of budding and seasoned performers, from “yard and abroad”. It’s another outer-national reggae and dancehall party you’ll pull up and play, again and again.

Vast dunes of harmonic overtones, the title track kicks off with ethereal chords and oriental lead melodies in a constant state of ebb and flow. 'Through The Desert' nests its meditative contents on a heavyweight foundation, overdriven sub-bass bustling amid the auditory sandstorm. On a more technoid venture, 'Mirage Dub' evokes a profound sense of ominous anticipation. As the veil is lifted, swaths of low-frequency excursions mingle amid the authentic percussion and glitched-out ambience. 'Rain' materializes introspective notions and spheres of melancholy. Hovering among the experimental soundscape, it reaches into the depths of consciousness as evanescent strings guide the way. In staccato style, 'Beyond The Temple' sports fidgeting hi-hats and sizzling pressure valves, guided by a creative micro-arrangement and distorted bassline foundation - hazy and expressive with plenty of grooves to round off the trip. Descending into the eerie atmosphere, 'Elderstab' takes a stride through synth Valhalla on top of old-school wobbles, merging in a beautiful and dynamic progression. Returning to the title track, the VIP turns up the heat in a full-on stepper version business fashion, energetic sound system fuel, providing a perfect contrast to the original - proper!
