"It took a while before it was this. It was a place to find clothes made by people lost in a minefield of ideas who liked to party. It was a place for temporary visions that turned out to happen and were then forgotten. It was always a place to find a new circle of friends. A place for expression where the throttle had been loosened and we all careered into the next day and the day after that. We all need to meet in the flesh away from the pixels and connect our first thoughts. Somewhere to ruffle our own feathers and take off on a phantom flight. It has been all this and it still is. Only now there is a record label to try and actually document a little of all of that. Welcome to Sameheads.

Jacques Charlier is primarily known as a visual artist, which obscures the fact that he’s been actively multi-disciplinary for the entirety of his career. Born in 1939 in Liège, Belgium, his interest in all forms of art began at a very early age when he aspired to be a poet, writer, musician, comic book artist, actor, and movie director, and in his own eccentric way became all of these things.

In the 1970s, inspired by the minimalist sounds of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, John Cage, and Meredith Monk, Charlier armed himself with a custom guitar, and sound modulating effects and started experimenting on his 4-track. He performed psychoacoustic pieces in Liège, Antwerp, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Milan and Düsseldorf, and in the inimitable performance art video “Desperados Music”, filmed by Paul Paquay in 1979 for Belgian television. Charlier hit a creative stride in the 1980s, recording off-kilter tunes influenced by everything from post-punk, EBM, Yé-yé and psychedelic rock. Similarities reside in the catalogs of Belgian labels Crammed Discs and Les Disques Du Crépuscule, yet even with these genre-bending precedents, Charlier’s music is idiosyncratic to the extreme. In 1984 and 1987, he self-released two cassettes incorporating synth, drum machine, his custom guitar, and vocalist Martine Doutreleau on occasional duets.

This limited edition 7” single offers the previously unreleased jangle/darkwave jam “Kiliwatch”, backed with “Loulou”, a scorching psychedelic oddity from one of Charlier’s original cassettes. It precedes the upcoming double LP compilation of Charlier’s music, and is the perfect introduction to his curious and complex artistic vision.

DC Promo Tracks #516: Hain "Emre Can Swim"

Very pleased to showcase yet another Glasgow-based act for our third Invisible Inc digital-only release.

This time it's French duo Double Discone who upped sticks from Clermont-Ferrand in late 2016 and landed in Glasgow on their feet running. They've got no less than 23 shows under their belt since their debut at an Invisible Inc night in May 2018, with of these performed 100% analogue and live!

For this release the duo have produced four extra-terrestrial synthesizer jams that head into slightly more experimental territory than the electro disco sound they are known for.

All tracks are recorded live with no editing using an incredibly limited set-up that the two can control using just 7 channels on their recording desk: 2 x drums, 3 x synths, 1 x reverb, 1 x delay.

The resultant sound is a vintage drum machine + retro-synth audio odyssey reminiscent of John Carpenter, Vangelis and other such pioneers of the '80s. Perhaps not entirely surprising, it reminds us most of their French compatriot: the singular Jean-Michel Jarre.

On the other hand the music is undeniably contemporary. Perhaps that's unavoidable when its two creators are both still in their early 20s? Similarities can be heard to Nico Motte, Etienne Jaumet and their peers over the Channel as well as Invisible Inc label mates Spacerocks and Tim Love Lee.

The EP opens with 'Espionage Industriel' which sounds like an imaginary theme tune for a 70s TV crime thriller gone wrong in which the detectives have been spiked with acid. 'Temps Modernes' is a look at the future from the past, a cult sci-fi film spinning out on the inside of the eyelids. The EP's titular 'Géant de Fer' sounds like a lost Patrick Cowley track created for one of the many gay porn soundtracks he recorded in the 80s. 'Retour de Chasse' winds things up very nicely; elements of Cluster, Harmonia, Tangerine Dream come to the surface.....the echoes of these ripple outward and dissipate. A perfect ending.

A new sub-label of the longstanding Canadian electro imprint Suction Records, Ice Machine — focusing on old-school wave/post-punk sounds — is thrilled to present a new, deluxe reissue of “Pow Wow”, the debut 1982 solo LP from Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder. Now expanded to a double-LP, and also released on CD/digital, it’s a definitive reissue which now includes Mallinder’s early solo discography in its entirety. This collection of mutant dub/funk/postpunk sounds just as fresh and contemporary in 2020 as it did in 1982 (note Autechre’s inclusion of standout cut “Del Sol” in a mix earlier this year), and highlights Mallinder’s crucial contributions to Cabaret Voltaire.
“Pow Wow” was commissioned by the Fetish Records label, and recorded at the Cabs’ Western Works studio, where Mallinder would spend his days recording with Cabaret Voltaire, and continue on alone into night recording his debut solo material.  “I slept very little in those days,” he adds, continuing: “ It was done on 8 track and very multi-tracked, so lots of recording, then bouncing, and overdubbing, to get the integrated feel of the tracks. I became very adept at pressing record then jumping onto equipment to play it - it was actually a very 'live' record in that sense. I've always seen rhythm at the core of what I do so I loved the layering of counter rhythms. The sequence/arpeggiator parts were all drum machine triggers that were played live. It was about creating a distinct groove so arrangements came from weaving in and out of those linear grooves. It was fun to play everything from drums, guitars, keys, trumpet, percussion, tapes... and record and produce it all. Prince got it from me!”. 
This new edition of “Pow Wow” contains 14 songs, and is housed in a recreation of the original, iconic Neville Brody jacket, painstakingly recreated using scans of Brody’s original artwork elements. The 2LP vinyl edition (with the direct-order-exclusive BABY-BLUE-VINYL edition limited to 300 copies) is in a reverse board, thick-spine jacket, and adds a 12”x24” folded poster/insert, featuring unused elements from Brody’s original designs, sketches, and instructions for the LP. The CD edition comes in a reverse board, 6-panel digipack.
