To get good recordings of birds you have to come close. On way of achieving this is to work with concealed microphones. It’s not easy to predict where the target bird/s will be, and I regularly fail in my attempts, but occasionally I succeed. I scouted a semi-open sandy area – a former tree seed orchard –  where I had encountered lekking Black Grouse last year, and hid a small stereo lavalier microphone overnight in the crown of an isolated small pine tree. One by one the Black Grouse males arrived in the late evening hours and immediately began displaying around the small pine tree.

Last Friday we were out in our local wolf territory (1-hour drive from Uppsala) and at midnight a lone wolf howled at the moon. Always an amazing experience. Siggefora, Uppland. September 8, 2023.

Utria National Park is a 54,300-hectare (210-square-mile) protected area located in the northwest of the wild Pacific coast.The Colombian Pacific  (Chocó) region, is one of the few remaining vast regions with no road infrastructure and large untouched jungle stretches. It is isolated from the rest of the country by impassable mountains with steep, muddy slopes covered in dense vegetation. The region also receives the most rainfall on the world.

Two hours before dawn the beavers are very active gnawing away. Also the bittern and toads continue their calls throughout the night. At dawn the full morning choir replaces the somewhat muted sounds with woodcocks, cuckoos, willow warblers, chaffinches, wood pigeons etc.

This Pakake / New Zealand Sea Lion crèche had a bunch of pups and mums calling out to each other in the warm noontime sun. One of the pups had wandered off to play with friends and the mum would growl every now and then to check in on them.

Most likely the Ural Owls in my home forest are not breeding this year for unknown reasons since there are quite many rodents. The female was calling from midnight to 01:30 but no male answered. Perhaps he has passed away?

With the numerous field activities, he has gained extensive first-hand experience in planning and performing all the technical aspects that are needed for a successful expedition doing fieldwork in remote and demanding environments. Staying for many weeks out in challenging or dangerous field conditions and performing sound documentation is, by now, well familiar to him.
