Luke's Anger is someone we've wanted to release for a long time. He's an act whose playful production style has been wiggling our ears for nearly 20 years, through releases on Don't, Uglyfunk, Sneaker Social Club, Tigerbeat 6, his own Bonus Round, and many more. Wearing various influences on his sleeve - Neil Landstrumm, Paul Johnson (RIP), Daniel Bell, DJ Hyperactive, Thomas Bangalter, Subhead, Jerome Hill - the "Rear Wiggle EP" is Luke's ode to bleep techno at its intersection with swinging '90s Chicago. But it's more than that too. Over 5 tracks he encompasses many elements that modern techno needs more of: shuffle, screaming riffs, phat pumping bass, FUNK, hypnotism, the list goes. Moving to England for its second release, Rant & Rave Records presents a proper EP from South Wales-based producer JoeFarr, known for his dance-floor jams on labels such as: ‘SLAM’, ‘Arts’, and his most recent success with 2019’s epic 12” ‘Death Becomes Us’. On the a-side ‘In This Anger’, which JoeFarr has written with Louisahhh, an anxiously dark, slowly developing atmosphere menaces behind a slow rolling, broken beat for maximum effect. This is punctuated by dark, slightly distorted female vocals with sporadic lyrics subtly encouraging its dance floors to move.. and think. Signature hard and bouncy grooves with infectious in-yer-face techno riffs dominate the rest of the EP with tracks ‘Laced Up’, ‘You Can See Me’ and ‘You will See Me (Hardcore)’, effortlessly weaving in and out of the pulsating groove with an interesting palette of machine sounding synths and heavily processed vocals.

At what point does a new tool or technology become so integral to a process as to be intrinsic? And what happens if that technology starts to subordinate its user?

By reflecting on these questions Machine Alliance, the new EP by Irish producer Kerrie on Tresor Records, connects her music to the sci-fi origins of techno and electronic music in general.

With inspiration from classic books and films of the genre such as The Machine Stops, The Matrix, and Blade Runner as well as modern explorations in art and philosophy like Free Your Mind and Technopoly, the EP’s title takes on two opposing but intersecting meanings.

One, based on the potential for machines to take over or replace humans, is a key idea of sci-fi that seems closer to reality with the arrival of machine learning and real artificial intelligence.

The second has a much more positive view, one where the “alliance” is between the artist and machine to create the music, a process she places immense value on, being both cathartic and therapeutic, whilst also being a vehicle of addition and expansion:

“I feel that it’s a collaboration…the machines are precise in their timing and I add the human touch (literally) in the live performance which adds natural imperfections, so we both provide something the other can’t. There’s also an element of growth; the machines get updates and so are always expanding in terms of their musical capabilities. And the more I push my own technical abilities I feel we are growing together in a constant synchronised dance.”

This “dance” results in four tracks (plus three digital-only bonuses) of classic machine funk which combine the aforementioned ideas in sci-fi with a deep lifelong affection for techno. Tracks like Ode to the D, and Technopoly Dream display this love through her choice of sounds and structure, both intentional and subconscious, while Replicants, and Human in the Loop project into other genres to fully round this release off as a contemporary example of music rooted in both past and future.

TL PREMIERE : Kerrie - Replicants [Tresor Records]

From Ben Thomas aka BNJMN comes an entirely new and different project, BRACK. Following a string of excellent releases for the likes of Rush Hour and Delsin, the Berlin-based British producer has launched his own imprint. Its inaugural release promises to simultaneously satisfy long-time listeners, and throw them for a loop.

BRACK 001 sees BNJMN venturing outside his digital domain for the first time, eschewing polished, computer-based constructions for an altogether dirtier, darker sound. He’s in raw, rare form on this EP, layering distorted samples, seething synths and coarse drum work to hypnotic effect. Nevertheless, the young producer’s deft hand and knack for trance-inducing grooves shine through the miasma. As with his best works, these tracks are alternately retro and forward-leaning, expansive and introspective, and completely singular. With his new label, we can expect the same characteristic combination of sounds and sensibilities. Step into the unique sonic world of BRACK 001.

Berlin-based label and queer collective Herrensauna return with the third installment of their compilation series which laid the foundation for the record label in 2020 as its first release. This time Herrensauna Vol. 3 ties in with the 9th anniversary of the collective. A celebration of longevity and its global impact, Herrensauna has become one of the most esteemed spaces in Berlin’s queer underground. The international reach of Herrensauna is evident throughout the latest compilation as it unites artists from Japan, USA, the Netherlands, France, and of course their spiritual home, Berlin.

Bridging together experimental club soundscapes, Herrensauna Vol. 3 is a confident stamp of where the label sees itself at the moment and the world it exists in, featuring artists they admire and friends of the collective. From the dreamy and ethereal melodies of Cora, Sepehr and Roza Terenzi to the wonked-out leftfield club anthems of De Grandi, Animistic Beliefs, 3Ddancer, Galaxian, R325 whilst rounding off the release with bass mutations from Fetus, truthspeaker, T5UMUT5UMU and Sexapil.

Sounds From NoWhere is pleased to premiere a new Stave' gem on 'Pi Electronics'.

SPLIT#4 is the final release for the 10th anniversary year of the π project, featuring Elements of Joy (a.k.a. UVB) and Stave, both returning to the label after their earlier appearances with PI08 and PI07 respectively. 
The vinyl release showcases six original tracks—three from each artist—with bonus tracks included in the digital release.

On the A-side, Elements of Joy delivers 3 original tracks of New-Beat leaning techno, including one song that features vocals by Zanias.
The opening track, "Prutaneousa (A1)" connects the dots between his previous entry on the label and this one with the use of retro, 80s inspired vocal samples, but this time on a rather driving beat sequence than an industrial/noise one.
"A Master of Distress (A2)" dives deeper into a hypnotic mood while “Vampiric Habits (A3)” takes it even further to an ethereal atmosphere through the input of Australian vocalist Zanias.

On the B-side, Chicago producer Stave presents his signature hypnotic, broken-beat techno. 
The side opens with "Weingart (B1)", a characteristically Stave textured track. 
"900MPH (B2)" combines IDM elements with dynamic broken rhythms, while "Capital, Selves (B3)" blends experimental with Grey Area influences.

The digital release includes two more bonus tracks: an energetic EBM techno piece by Elements of Joy and an atmospheric techno by Stave, completing this diverse split release.

SPLIT#4 is a fitting close to the project's milestone year, celebrating a decade of our π vision.
