Synopsis of Interview
John Wood was born in the Vert Hospital, Haddington, but lived in Balfour Street in the Nungate until he married in 1961. His family moved to the Nungate around 1936 and the first house John lived in was at number 1, although the family later moved to numbers 9 and 19 Balfour Street. One of John's earliest memories of the Nungate is of the flags which were put out to celebrate the end of WW2, and he recalls the homecoming of prisoners of war who were treated like heroes on their return. Although the Nungate was regarded as a tough area in Haddington, John has good memories of growing up there and he particularly remembers the annual Nungate Gala as a big event. Among his other memories, John remembers bombs falling on Haddington in 1941, the big flood in 1948 and the tannery fire. He also recalls animals being driven through the streets of Haddington to the abattoir, the various shops and businesses, and many local characters. He vividly remembers the day the nine-hole golf course opened at Amisfield Park, previously a prisoner of war camp, as well as illegal gambling taking place in the Nungate.
