Hello and welcome! In this audio postcard, we’re headed to Pittsburg! Our first stop is the historic Senator John Heinz History Center. This museum is jam packed with 7 exhibits that are sure to give insight into historical facts that you may not know about the city itself! One exhibit we focused on was the sports museum, which focused on the history of Pittsburgh's famous sports teams. After the museum visit, we walk right down the road and into the Strip District. Home to a wide variety of unique shops and restaurants that have been around for years, there's something for everyone to enjoy! Our final stop is at DeLucas diner, a cozy old fashioned diner in the heart of the strip district itself that's known for their comfort food.

After hearing about our conversation earlier this week with landscape architect Laurie Olin – where Mr. Olin described an assignment he did as a student at the University of Washington 65 years and which he assumed was lost to the mists of time - Ms. Renouard shared a copy of Mr. Olin’s work from the UW archives (parts of which have been posted at the CASCADE OF HISTORY Facebook page). There’s a lot to discuss about that assignment, and about the work Elisa Renouard is doing now with her students to explore and re-create parts of Seattle that were wiped off the map decades ago – as part of a recurring student exhibit called “CITY ERASED.”

The powerful conclusion to our Holocaust Education Month series focuses on resistance, justice, and lessons for today. This episode was produced and recorded by Mr Maillet, High School History and Psychology Teacher. He apologizes for any mispronunciation of German, Belarusian or Polish names. 

In part 3, we explore the remarkable stories of courage: the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, revolts in Sobibor and Auschwitz, the Bielski partisan brothers who saved over 1,200 Jews in the Belarusian forests, and Żegota; the only state-sponsored underground rescue organization in occupied Europe.

We follow liberation, the Cyprus detention camps where 52,000 Holocaust survivors were imprisoned by Britain (1946-1949), and witness the Nuremberg Trials. We learn how Raphael Lemkin coined the word "genocide" and how the 1948 UN Convention made it a crime under international law, but shockingly few Nazis were ever prosecuted.

We meet several of the 27,000 Righteous Among the Nations members including Chiune Sugihara, who wrote visas by hand for 29 days saving thousands of Jews, and Arie Van Mansum, who rescued hundreds in the Netherlands before emigrating to Ottawa.

We confront the painful truth: "Never Again" has failed; genocide has occurred in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur. We examine what the Allies knew and failed to do, rising contemporary antisemitism, and ask ourselves: what lessons must we carry forward?

Who Were the Baptists? Roger Williams and Religious Freedom

E576 |  The seventeenth century has often been characterized as a period of disorder and religious polemics in the Ottoman Empire. In this podcast, Nir Shafir takes us inside his new book, which argues that the polemics of the early modern Ottoman world were fueled in part by changes in communication, namely the rise of short pamphlets that circulated easily in handwritten copies. Pamphlets created a new arena largely independent from the institutional centers of knowledge production where people debated everyday questions of the time about what it meant to be Muslim. In exploring the world of Ottoman pamphlets, Shafir also offers a new introduction to the nature of Ottoman education, book production, and reading practices prior to the rise of print and modern state institutions.

Nir Shafir is Associate Professor of History at University of California, San Diego. His first book, The Order and Disorder of Communication: Pamphlets and Polemics in the Seventeenth-Century Ottoman Empire (Stanford, 2024), was awarded 2025 Book Prize from the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association. Shafir is also a longtime contributor to the Ottoman History Podcast, formerly serving as editor-in-chief and appearing in over 50 episodes since 2013.

Maryam Patton is Assistant Professor of History at Wesleyan University. Her research interests span the cultural and intellectual history of the late medieval and early modern Ottoman Empire, the history and theories of time and temporality, and cross-cultural transmission in the Mediterranean world, among others. She received her PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University and is preparing her first book on the Ottoman conception of time.
