Born atop the forgotten ruins of a crumbling city, a new civilization had emerged from the ruin wrought by demonkind upon the landscape that lay beneath them. Lead by their prophets of a new and powerful faith, the people of this civilization had risen up against the demon kings, wielding the magic of their divine allies as weapons with which to exorcise their being once more from the land. This war though hard fought had born fruit, and with the slaying of the final demon the people had rejoiced, celebrating their victories with monumental constructions to mark the beginning of a new and golden era. Foremost of these was the great cathedral that lay at the heart of their new city, built both as a space of worship for the populace and as an eternal ward of imprisonment for the souls of demonkind which could not be slain, forever condemning them to an incorporeal existence under the watchful eye of the divine.

Ages had passed since then, and time had once again ground its steady edge against the minds of the people and upon the stones and timbers that had supported the great city for so long. Ritual had been forgotten, and structures of greater grandeur had been built as the city expanded, relegating it’s once monumental cathedral to neglect. Thus it was that the falling of only a single candle had lit an aged timber in it’s great hall, in so doing weakening the ancient wards that had kept the demonic spirits at bay. Ever vigilant in their ceaseless desire to escape, the demon kings fanned this flame with their focused ire, nurturing it from a single mote into a overwhelming conflagration that tore at the runic chains that had bound them for so long. Before long, the roaring of the flames was augmented by the howls of demonic spirits set free from a millennia of imprisonment, their visages taking form in the fire as manifestations of their burning rage. As the inferno bellowed ever higher, the city cowered in fear, for it was clear that the time of DIVERGENCE had come once more.

EATBRAIN unleashes the full fury of their horde with the fourth installment in their DIVERGENCE compilation series, a gargantuan 26 track compilation filled to the brim with new tracks from EATBRAIN mainstays and newcomers alike. Brought together by their affinities for EATBRAIN’s unrestrained neurofunk sound, the artists within deliver a tour de force of the label’s guiding philosophy with ferocious basslines and terrifying sonic atmospheres alike, delivering a mammoth series of tracks set to inspire the fervor of the label’s horde in the months to come.

The GRAVEDIGGER sighed as he planted his shovel firmly into the muddy soil of a new plot in the cemetery, exhausted from the endless toil that had been forced upon those of his profession.Though it had only been days since an outbreak of a strange new disease had swept over the city, it felt as though an eternity had passed. The countless graves that had been dug now threatened to merge beneath his feet, their dividing walls weakened by the torrential rains that seemed to swirl endlessly in the sky above and the space between each had begun to shrink out of necessity. Under these rains it seemed the work could never end, for the graves never truly settled. Many had been found eroded by the flooding, revealing the contorted and rotted forms of their inhabitants which jutted through the sludge at odd angles. Indeed, so heavily did it seem to pour that some graves remained empty after the night, the corpses formerly within them unable to be accounted for amidst the inundated ground. 

For all the years he had spent in this position, the GRAVEDIGGER had not seen a worse combination of conditions. It felt as though the world itself was conspiring against the inhabitants of his city, who could scarcely see their dead who had been with them in life merely hours ago. He expected to join them soon enough, having handled the corpses of those who had passed for days on end. Perhaps, he mused, he already had. With so many empty graves, and no bodies to be found, who was to say that one wasn’t his? Where had he been before this had begun? Memory hardly seemed to matter anymore. If the dead truly did shamble among the living within this cursed city, perhaps he should count himself lucky to be amongst those who lived on in death above the ground.

MOB TACTICS return to EATBRAIN with GRAVEDIGGER, a three track EP filled with revenant rhythms set to revitalize the ears of the EATBRAIN horde. BURR OAK mark a monolithic moment in their sonic journey with the release of their debut album, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which stands as the crown jewel of the two member’s careers as solo artists and as a duo alike. Packed with a mammoth 18 tracks that span the full breadth of the Neurofunk genre, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG sees BURR OAK deliver a definitive work set to cement itself well within the history of the genre.

BURR OAK’s own story is mirrored in the stories of their twin cowboy personas, Scruggs and Sonny Jim, whose escapades are expressed throughout the album’s tracklist and the tales that accompany it. Much like these two inseparable wanderers, BURR OAK’s two members, Niko and Julien, began their careers as solo artists before joining together to embark on their shared quest as BURR OAK. Longtime fans of Neurofunk will recognize each by their many other monikers. Niko has produced and performed variously as a member of the French Drum & Bass trio Signs, as half of the duo Cecil Hotel, and under his solo alias Opsen throughout his long career devoted to the pursuit of Drum & Bass’ most technical edge. By contrast, Julien’s journey under his solo alias The Clamps has seen him champion both cinematic soundscapes and the genre’s most extreme fringes, merging beauty and brutality within his music in equal measure. 
If this wasn’t a colorful palette of a career enough, they are also running another project with the also Toulouse based SKS – “Forum” which is also a heavyweight drum and bass project with a jungle/rave/oldschool twist. And to add a cherry on the top Julien runs Third Colony with Yan, an extravagant IDM/downtempo project.

As BURR OAK, these two prolific artists intertwine their sounds in an inexorable musical lattice, presenting a unified sonic profile that is more than the sum of its parts. This stylistic synergy thrives amidst SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which details the story of BURR OAK both in fiction and as the producers they are today. The album’s title speaks to this, not only for the duo’s cowboy characters but for Niko & Julien as well. Beneath the branches of the BURR OAK, these titans of Neurofunk have truly found somewhere they belong.
