It hasn't taken long for Document One to define their own niche among the Technique Recordings roster. Brimming with multi-genre experience, this team has come well-equipped with a fresh and clean production style, overt musicality and uncompromising levels of funk. This release reasserts their commitment to the dancefloor while showing off yet more colours from their palette.

“Run the Block” takes the tough but smoky sound that Document One has made their own and adds a layer of East Coast hip-hop flavour. The rap-along vocal, that trademark upright and synthetic bass fusion, the popping drums and live-instrument arrangement combine to make this tune a definitive statement of Document One's musical heritage. And of course, that means it has that jazzfunk dancefloor energy in abundance.

Then “Small Steps” flips the script, darkening things up in a way you might not be expecting from these guys. The intro is the sound of approaching menace, as military drums call the dance to order. An eerie dialogue sample ratchets up the tension, before a building kick pattern is deployed as a call-to-arms. Then the drop is all about those twisted tendrils of bass, snaking around techstep drums and ghost-in-the-machine stabs. This is what happens when musicality meets aggression on a hell-bent mission to mash up the rave.

So, as well as keeping a firm grip on their low-down dancefloor funking credentials, this release has proved that Document One have a love and talent for all sides of this music. As their track titles declare, they “Run the Block” in the funk neighbourhood and they're making “Small Steps” into the shadowy technoid realm. Now they've shown they can kill the dance in both, it's clear the Document One operation doesn't believe in boundaries.

A burning haze, hangs heavy under the low slung beams of the passing stars. Gravity fights and pulls with the dying light before letting it slide into the FADED tops of the trees. On the outer shelf of the disk on Stavrogen, the forests transform into smokey, swarming metropolis’s full of devils. Eviscerated souls come in and out of view, vanishing as they pass through the ether - the metamorphism of each SHAPESHIFTER is complete as night tightens its grip - darkness is the onlyconcern. On the far North tip, sits the rebel fighter Jstor, her hands lightly pressing down onto the recently stolen NINJA SCROLL. Sweat running over the burning circuits rotting in her flesh. From here, she is perched high in the shadows of the spike, rising up behind her in a thin smoothstructure from the cold deep earth into a point over ten miles high through the burning atmosphere. The rebel Jstor is fighting with her thoughts amongst the noises from below. In under four minutes from now she will destroy this planet and everything that infests it, but she knows she isnot the first to declare her love in this way to this burned out utopia and to have failed in its obliteration. Staring down at the devils caped in madness she begins to muse that every living thing has had its use - Stavrogen must be turned to ruin or it will continue to grow stronger infecting everything it drifts into. Jstor straps the NINJA SCROLL into her chest armour and pushes herself back into the spike. Tapping a broken finger on a small display sewn into the skin on her arm she sends two signals. The first plots an irreversible and fatal course for the disk known as Stavrogen. In 230 seconds from now the pressure between the two poles of the closest stars will fight for Stavrogen, like two ravaged dogs fighting for a bone, pulling it and everything on it into a billion molten pieces. The second signal pushed into the display sets a vice like grip into Jstors body fastening her to the spike and moving her off this world at a speed. Her body instantly hits paralysis and brain hasceased to function as she exits through zero point gravity. Jstor has become a suspended corpse with a 0.1% chance of survival. She is spat into clear space as Stavrogen is sucked away underneath her into the galactic abyss.

ClashTone are an unlikely four piece act that merged in late 2018 to fill a void in the world of Drum and Bass. Eatbrain Label owner and D&B heavy weight Jade found himself curiously interested by the new musical demos’ of three almost obscure Londoners - Terror, Jolliffe and Mai DaVael. Terror previously being one half of the immensely successful Modestep - ClashTone marks his first musical outing since having made his departure from the band. The four producers set out to put music at the front of their writing and pin it down with the power and energy of DNB. The international collaboration gives you the gritty realism of London Town with the truly dark reeses and bass rips and drama found in the mainland European raves and dancehalls. This first EP takes you on an unbroken journey that evokes emotion and pushes the listener to the depths of the soul. Strap in and get ready for the ride through 2019 with a non stop assault on the senses.

The lights went out. That’s what happened first. The portal we had opened required more power than we anticipated to maintain, and it plunged our laboratory into darkness, shutting down our camera feeds and security countermeasures. The portal closed quickly afterwards, and thus three of us grabbed flashlights in order to restart the generator. We were just opening the door from the lab when I heard it. An awful skittering sound, like bone on metal, broken into a hundred granular steps which ended as abruptly as they had begun. We all stopped to listen, but found only silence awaiting our ears. One of our trio swore they had seen something move on the edge of their vision, but myself and the other dismissed their suspicion. The portal had only been open for mere seconds: nothing could have gotten through unless it had been waiting on the other side. We turned our flashlights back to the hallway, and that was when the being struck. There, in the beam of my colleague’s torch, I saw but for an instant the most hideous creature I have ever laid my eyes upon. Its spindly legs, protruding spine, and trunk like orifice were held together by a body that seemed to mock any semblance of natural form. As the ray of light washed over it, it leapt at incredible speed directly towards my colleague, attaching that horrible trunk to his mouth as he screamed briefly in horror before dropping to the floor, drained of all life that had been within him but a moment ago. Terrified, I ran, dropping my flashlight behind me, and it was well that I did. For somehow as I saw it, a name came to mind, a name that revealed the truth of its kind. Drawn to the light, they’ll take your life as they skitter, for such is the nature of that otherworldly FLICKER.

CLASHTONE return to the EATBRAIN label for their latest single, which follows their debut Ninja Scroll EP and single “Pretender” from the label’s Divergence II compilation with similar cinematic flair. Composed within the multiple minds of the mysterious supergroup, FLICKER hones an amalgam of influences into a razor sharp single slice of dancefloor oriented drum & bass, introducing a new variety of monster into the ever-growing EATBRAIN horde.

NAIS returns to NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his LET’S ROCK EP, the latest in an explosive series of releases across the neurofunk scene’s top labels including Eatbrain, Bad Taste, and a prior release on NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his EP “Dirty Bounce”. A diverse display of NAIS’ boisterous sonic character, the LET’S ROCK EP sees NAIS continue to build his meteoric momentum with a further four uncompromising tracks.

LET’S ROCK opens with a track by the same name, within which NAIS warps a funk fueled introductory instrumental with an uproarious bassline that allows space for the samples swung snares to step underneath. VISIBLE TRIGGERS takes a similar approach to its bassline synthesis, but instead stretches it amidst a rapid percussive sequence of ringing metallic timbre. The initial dubby atmosphere of JNGL follows next, taking the source material of the genre as the inspiration for a uniquely technical set of sounds. The braggadocious bravado of BOSSIN then closes the EP, perhaps most emblematic of NAIS boisterous sound in it’s hyperenergetic & funky bassline flow.

With LET’S ROCK, NAIS returns to his NEUROPUNK RECORDS launchpad as he seeks to set out on a second sonic journey that sees him rise even further than the explosive success of his first.
