Within the catacombs lay an artifact from a primordial age, untouched by the ravages of time under the protection of the magical wards that surrounded it and sealed within a series of hidden chambers and mazelike passages filled with untold horrors and traps that would deter even the most determined of invaders. The extent of this labyrinth was necessitated by the twin opposing powers represented by the artifact and its resting place, each capable of causing untold destruction should they be unleashed upon the world without being kept in check by the other. As such, the pair had been frozen in time this way for millennia, a lasting warning of the old powers that were better left unawakened.

In cataclysms that created the world, beings of unrestrained primordial energy roamed the land and constantly reshaped it to their will amidst a never-ending chaos of destruction. Those minor beings who hid beneath their feet had little recourse against the incursions of these beasts, and even should one be felled by their greatest of warriors it would only be reborn again from within the heart of the primordial chaos. So it was that the most skilled mages & craftsmen among them toiled for generations to create a blade that could pierce this endlessly beating heart, and bring tranquility to this world that had suffered under chaos for so long. Thus it was that the wards had been set and that the great labyrinthine temple had been constructed, for as the blade pierced the heart of all primordials it did further seal their power within the wound, so requiring that it may never be removed again lest it let their power spill forth into the world once more. To truly murder beings of such power, the ancestors had learned, one must hold the blade within their viscera for all eternity.

NUVERTAL after a brief appearance on Gydra’s album delivers his debut EATBRAIN release onto the ears of the label’s horde with REAL MURDER, an EP featuring three solo tracks and a collaborative work with EATBRAIN veterans GYDRA. Within, NUVERTAL brings a set of sonics that surge upon the oscillations of the EP’s electrified synths, fusing finely honed highs with devastatingly weighted basses for a work that is ready to energize the monstrous hearts of the EATBRAIN horde.

“Rapido…Rapido…Rapido…”. These were the words that echoed throughout the aluminum-clad walls of a vast underground complex populated almost entirely by beings made of circuitry and wires that spoke not in response to the utterances of the installation’s sole human inhabitant. Instead, the synthetic lifeforms went about their tasks unperturbed by the odd sounds that emanated from within the deepest portions of the laboratory wherein lurked a singular organic mind which lead the project with a fervor that could only be born from the human psyche.

“There simply must be a way to break through the barrier,” came the next set of words from within, this time contained within a full sentence. The robots noticed not, continuing about their tasks as the great particle accelerator within began to thrum with a cold electric life all of its own. Slowly, the accelerator began to draw power not only from the facility’s reserves but from the very kinetic energy of the planet’s rotation itself, a colossal source of energy yet untapped in this way for fear of the unforeseen consequences that might lay beyond its use. The machine glowed with a blue heat for a moment under the influx of all of this power, which amassed itself behind a single particle locked in stasis at absolute zero within the ammunition chamber.

“RAPIDO!” came one final shout alongside the clanging of a metallic switch being thrown with gusto as the hypothermic lock on that singular particle was dispelled. In an instant, the energy buildup behind that particle was released, sending the minuscule speck of matter rocketing through the universe at faster than light speeds that set it tearing through the fabric of space-time as it traveled.

Alongside their solo Sinecore and T-Psy aliases, Sylvain Colmant and Gilles De Ro have been collaborating as Human Error since 2010. The pathways of the vault reached deep into the earth, their contents hidden away from the citizens of the surface - the living - oblivious to the enigmatic codex of ever-shifting sound that modulated within. Frequencies never perceived by any still living being undulated in the darkness, refracting and fragmenting against the walls of their prison. The source was unspeakable, the existence of such a device was to be explicitly denied to the few on the periphery of the project, for the tones it produced were known to affect those who heard them with an equally enigmatic array of symptoms. The compulsions wrought from its constant and incomprehensible auditory alterations had grasped at the very core of the test-subjects’ souls, piercing the fabric of their minds and spilling their sanity across the walls of the chamber. Every conceivable test beyond the borders of morality had been performed to discern the nature of the infernal machine, but reason hesitated at the edge of the madness that emanated from the sonic maelstrom at its core. All had failed in the face of that ever-changing maw. 

The device was locked away, buried, forgotten, expunged from any and all official discussion. But an echo remained, holding on to a whisper in the subtlety of a rumour, produced not by the the codex itself, but across the tongues of the very few at the fringes of the project, tantalized by the tales of sounds so deviant as to have been buried, cast as illegal. The whisper grew and spread, a hidden frequency reverberating throughout the people, its resonance growl increasing in intensity, driving all to distraction. The populace began its search, feverishly scouring the streets and the city outskirts, the machine’s call echoing and answering as they closed in on the source… enticing them as a siren with languid promises otherworldly experience. In time, before the vast sealed entry to the forgotten crypt of the codex, a mass of supplicants surged in unison at the gateway. Ravenous, single-minded, they hurled themselves at the structure, lost in the desire to be overwhelmed, drowned in the illegal audio within. As the prison wall ruptured, the machine erupted with a vast, resounding wail, tearing at its new worshippers with sonic claws forged from pure terror, wrapped in the souls of those prior who had suffered the same fate. The acolytes were thrown backwards, faces drained in horror at the momentary comprehension of the malevolent mechanical deity they had released. Their minds were pillaged of their thoughts, brainwaves seized and entwined within the codex’s power as its sonics penetrated and passed through them with vicious, unstoppable force.

The mass of supplicants prostrated just beyond its twisted paws, their pathetic mewling pleasantly caressing the towering feline fiend’s ears as they expressed their divine agony. Drinking up the delicious earmilk of their pain, it reclined languidly in its glorious pedestal; a mass of flesh and sinews with the fine carved bones from the countless many condemned to this realm of eternal torment. Its three eyes rolled apathetically to fall upon one particular beggar, drained of almost all remaining life from her years pennance, spent at the foot of the infernal throne, worshipping the glory of pain in all its truth and crying for salvation. The utter futility of this endeavor suddenly dawned on the great cat, as the constancy of myriad calls made for escape fell upon his ears at once. Suddenly annoyed by this ever-present sound, he reached out, spearing the pathetic being before him with a claw and flinging her from into rock and into the depths of the molten river below. His eyes watched her form ignite and fade in the heat, her soul joining others to be swept into its current on a journey to be reborn as pitiful lesser devils elsewhere in the plane. How benevolent an act, the cat thought to itself, freeing the pitiful creature from her suffering for a brief moment and more even - giving her the opportunity of such an esteemed metamorphosis. Even though the pathetic fiend she would be reborn as would hold not even a candle to his own magnificence, it would still be a marked improvement against the limits of her prior flesh. Sated by his own thoughts, he leaned forward once, rotating his vast ears to better drink in the fresh desperate energy of the remaining supplicants. Its hideous mouth opened to a wide, sharp smile, revealing cruelly serrated fangs that shone unnaturally with a umbral hue. “A reward for my benevolence,” he thought as he plucked the nearest wretch from the rock with a single talon, his pupils sharpening with focussed malevolence as he tossed them into his fur-lined maw. Satisfied, his hunger temporarily sated, there was but one thing left to do. He would take a nap.

The ZOMBIE CATS return to the label that set the fire on their ferocious project back in 2014, placing them on a fierce trajectory of furiously kinetic releases that have brought them to the present, their most pointed assault on the eardrums yet with the WORLD’S END EP on EATBRAIN. With the title track tearing out of the mouth of hell with slower bpm but highly charged energy, further establishing the newly forming neurowave genre, the cats make a bold statement from the outset. Also featuring 2 intense collaborations with masters of their art ABIS and MALUX, alongside 3 further astounding intensely fresh solo cuts, the WORLD’S END EP is a welcome return for one of tech dnb’s most respected duo’s, on one of the genres most consistent labels.
