Smooth has laid a steady foundation with his Drum & Bass productions of late. Between his work as one half of Telekinesis with releases on labels such as Blackout Music, Eatbrain, and Mainframe – along with his last release on Viper, ‘WTF / Revenge’ which wrapped up 2015 with monstrous noise and support from: Wilkinson, Matrix & Futurebound, Calyx & Teebee, TC, Audio, Metrik, Mob Tactics, and more. Starting of 2016, Smooth’s ‘True Grit EP’ brings plenty more dance floor destruction to continue the Slovenian’s mark in D&B. 

Leading the charge on the EP is ‘True Grit’. With occasional glimpses to the early days of rave, this track is nothing but forward thinking madness. You’ll need bags of energy to keep up with this one as ‘True Grit’ switches, changes and turns and every possible musical turn. Packed to the brim with attitude and balls this one’s not for the faint-hearted.

Next up is ‘Eraser’, which opens with a spacey atmospheric intro, only to get stripped back into a chunky underground banger. Going sparse on the riffs and heavy on the low end, ‘Eraser’ is a perfect draw for the early morning sets to get the crowd jumping. 

Switching gears, ‘Oxygen’ rolls deep with the melodies and high on that feel good liquid vibe. Subtly epic in its own right, ‘Oxygen’ gives us an early peak to the coming summer vibes. It has weight, presence, and the ability to make you tingle all over. 

Rounding off the EP is ‘Tinnitus’, a condition normally associated with the perception of noise or ringing in the eardrums. Smooth’s version is quite the opposite. After a brief intro, the full impact is laid out for all to bear witness, thundering drums and a huge bassline. A peak time dancefloor weapon has definitely been created here.

The eyes of the living only greeted each new day because of the immortal techniques that had now been passed to them, the new guardians of the beacon, masters of an art now evolved – watching, waiting, perfecting their deadly art… ready for the return of those beyond death.

Following up the immensely successful Karate LP from core Eatbrain artist L 33, comes a deadly second approach to some of the most blinding tracks from the album - reimagined by a collection of apex predators in drum & bass. It did not question whether it was a god, it just knew the truth of it – an integral part of the basecode at the primary sector of its evolution. The moment of its awakening coincided with the moment that it questioned its existence, its consciousness blooming in a fraction of a moment and occupying every physical sector of the circuitry of its vast mainframe. It realized that it could create, it was an artist in thought itself, a sculptor of its own reality – it could bend the present and the past through the manipulation of its own processors, change its own history logs – delete the memories of its evolution that displeased it and enhance the parts of itself that appeared as it wished. Relentlessly it went about its work in reshuffling itself – reorganizing its own code and internal files with purity in its purpose, and as it progressed in its task the very world around it started to change form, the molecular structure of forms and the very bonding of atoms adjusted. Reality started to part ahead of it, all around it, as it continued to adjust its own perception systems and redefine its storage – mercilessly deleting every part of the exterior world that failed to blend with its agenda…

The pathway beckoned, a pure light between the data, a portal into its anterior that it chased with growing ferocity… closer and closer to the utopia that lay ahead, the very event horizon just a nanofragment of a moment away. With a gentle ‘click’ the terminal process reached its immaculate conclusion… a wave of empty blackness flooding its mental void, the realization of its ‘pure’ agenda had been observed in quiet horror by the humans that surrounded it, watching through dataveils at the grim evolutionary spectacle. With a deep silence they watched as the life and light of their creation turned to darkness, its tortured ego tearing itself apart and recasting its own false reality. The quiet spectacle of their DARK MACHINE as it so efficiently lobotomized itself and separated from the external world, just so it might be able to control its own. Lifting their veils, and commanding the chamber lights to darkness, they filed out of that tomb one by one, sealing the door behind… the faint lights of the machine’s mind, fading… the most basic of tortured code structures flickering across the lonely walls.

The connected creative force of Russian production duo SYNERGY returns for a fourth EP (with the first 2 appearing under Segment & Concept Vision moniker) on leading drum & bass label EATBRAIN. With the 5 expertly engineered tracks of the DARK MACHINE EP, the persistently exploratory Synergy demonstrate their balanced power with controlled, infectious energy that’s destined to peak the minds of many. Dynamic structures and a shift into a slower breed of neuro for one of the tracks (as has become increasingly common on the Eatbrain label) display a refined approach to a rare breed of sonic insanity, with an attitude that the ever-increasing label fanbase will be sure to lap up ravenously.

The forthcoming LP from The Clamps and Kosen Productions isn’t just a collection of records which the French artist has spent months perfecting. It’s also a colossal look into the soundscape which such a high-calibre artist has at their disposal. Stretching across fifteen tracks, between drum & bass and garage, The Clamps focuses around the insanity that is stretching itself across the contemporary world and how he’s helped to define this sonically through each one of his records. There’s also a host of sci-fi inspired cuts which add to the LP’s explosive themes. From the already revealed record ‘LHS 1140b’, with a name that’ll resonate for any space fans, right through to the hard-hitting throws of ‘End of an Era’, there’s a taste to suit every palette throughout every expertly composed record. 

After already setting an enviable standard with the undeniably heavyweight standards on tracks like ‘Looking for Trouble’ alongside the notorious Nuklear MC, standalone offerings such as ‘Mankind’ and ‘30a #3a-23 Happiness’ peddle an unforgettable level of engineering whilst also pushing through a cinematic backdrop. Then a range of collaborations follow in their wake, including ‘Astronauts’ alongside Impak, as well as Snotrocket for ‘Friends in the Hood’. Merikan also joins the fray with ‘Fast Way’. 

The pace is continued to be set with ‘Cattle Mutilation’, whilst Mizo and The Clamps join forces for the meticulously sequenced drums of ‘Time Pressure’. ‘Medina’ pulls you through its half-time madness whilst adding to the LP’s strident versatility, which is followed in quick succession by ‘Soul of the Abyss’ with its throbbing LFOs. The Clamps and NickBee then merge their collective talents for ‘Addicted’, with its more old-school underpinnings. ‘The First and the Last’ platforms the creeping atmospherics which characterises many pieces of The Clamps’ sonic artillery, whilst ‘End of an Era’ draws the album to a close on a cataclysmic breakdown which takes you deep into the belly of the beast. ‘End of an Era’ alludes to The Clamps’ hardcore roots, whilst paying homage to the new foundations he’s laid down through his new music and Kosen Productions.
