The signal had flickered into existence without warning, a sudden complex sequence that almost filled the awaiting databanks within moments and laid out an array of schematics beyond comprehension. For years they labored, first to understand and then to build the machine it described, a craft that could finally escape the outermost reaches of the solar system and carry a single human beyond the limits of their star, to the point of the signal’s source. They picked the passenger with care - their most capable pilot, linguist and scientist, ascribed beyond the limits of fear through overwhelming curiosity… The journey was swift, covering that most immeasurable of distances in human terms within days. As he drew close to the origin, far from the sun and beyond the influence of the system, it appeared as a speck in the distance but quickly grew into a sight of overwhelming complexity, a vast silent ship, and static in the darkness, blotting out the light of distant stars. As the shuttle drew close, it shuddered into life, internal lights hesitating before firmly illuminating and colossal vents purged gases into the yawning nothingness of space. The vessels nestled together, extending appendages and exchanging code. With a sigh the airlock opened and sequential lighting ushered him within the vacant hulk, a faint trembling of power running through the hull and beneath his feet. He entered the endless chamber with wide pupils, so big that it receded into blackness, the overwhelming mechanism before him filling his vision – a vast sphere engineered to an impossible configuration… a pathway to the stars… the WARP DRIVE.

MALUX is an artist who surged into the drum & bass sphere suddenly in 2016, delivering a tight selection of releases on some of the leading labels in the genre and making his mark on the European live scene with rapid success. For this weeks podcast we decided to massively up the tempo from last weeks stunningly relaxed effort with a detour into the fast paced terrain of drum and bass and naturally turned to DC Breaks to provide this weeks exclusive podcast. 

For those of you less than familiar with the D&B pioneers it all started when Andy C’s seminal imprint Ram Records signed several tracks to Frequency Recordings back in 2005. This steady stream of releases helped cement the act's profile as both supreme DJs and future leaders of drum and bass and saw them storm the scene over the coming years, unleashing their anthemic basslines on dancefloors from London to LA, bringing big hype to the scene with remixes for major international artists  and labels such as Universal, Sony, Island, Parlophone, EMI and Ministry of Sound.

Far from studio hermits DC Breaks have spent years crafting their unique live performance in clubs and festivals around the world, DJing across 6 decks and two mixers, and as a result  have forged  a reputation as one of the most exciting acts in Drum & Bass for their willingness to break boundaries. So with this in mind and a fresh release entitled Gambino/Burning ft Camden Cox set to drop on Ram Records on November 18th, a remix for Loadstar on the horizon and a series of upcoming dates in Oxford and Bologna before returning to the capital for Ram’s Xmas bash on December 12th we thought the time was right to welcome them to the DT podcast to deliver the energy of one of their sets to all our fans not quite lucky enough to catch them in the flesh over the coming months!

It began as a whisper, spoken in low tones in multiple languages in the uneasy night. Talk of a place where the greatest of mecha roam, gathering amongst the desolate ruins of a war prepared for and never fought. The first explorers returned with stories of low frequency weapons, harvested from the ruined depths of a subterranean complex. With these re-engineered into towering relays capable of pure sonic carnage, the lands began filling rapidly with pilgrims from distant places, offering themselves as captives to their own higher mental states. What was once a mere whisper has now become legend, with this meeting of the mightiest clans bringing forth the greatest frequency warriors to stake out their claims. 

EATBRAIN casts a long shadow across the fray, setting seasoned label veterans L 33 and MINDSCAPE into the hordes of adrenaline-fuelled ravers alongside recent label additions MACHINECODE and AGRESSOR BUNX - all of whom have LPs coming on the label as well as appearing at the festival. A tight manifesto is stretched across the 4 rowdy and high-energy tracks that make up the EATBRAIN GOES TO LET IT ROLL, with the irresistible audio manipulative skills of Eatbrain crafted to exquisitely tear up the dance. Night has fallen, the threat of extinction riding on the edge of its transition. Decaying and contorted faces of the undead leer from the shadows, twisted limbs reaching from the darkness towards the eternal signal - driven to crush its subversive broadcast and extinguish the final beacon. Rumours of the infernal mechanism were rife amongst the population, that somewhere deep in the sublevels of the city it waited with the eternal patience that belongs only to machines. It was said that those people whom the system had broken, whose minds had snapped – ejecting them from the social architecture… were first incarcerated, analyzed and then taken to it to be erased completely. He was about to find out the truth of this, dragged from his metallic cell by those machine claws, his arms bound tightly across his chest and vocal chords paralyzed. He wanted to scream, terror engulfing him and winding around his vertebrae, giving birth to a black hole within the pit of his stomach... but all that emerged was a whimper of despair. It was registered by the synthetic mind and catalogued in its vast archive of variations of this moment - its casual analysis of this journey to death. The chamber was incomprehensibly vast… and it was there waiting, reaching with its threatening appendages from the shadows, its diabolical jaws enshrouded in the dull green light of a vast viewing screen displaying the symbol of the architect. The teeth started that relentless slicing, the very ground trembling through the power of its mighty workings, the mechanism to be his absolute obliteration… those claws pulling him inexorably towards the end as the viewscreen changed and flashes the word ‘goodbye’. The GRINDER completes its work. In the almost oblivious streets above, a faint rumble is felt – knowing, fearful looks are briefly exchanged before the citizens hurry on with their business.
 
Apex neuro and tech producer MAZTEK arrives with his first full EP on leading d&b label, EATBRAIN. Following up appearances on the label’s Tales of the Undead and Mirror Universe VA LP’s, the GRINDER EP sees Maztek deliver 4 tracks of high-grade dancefloor weaponry, enwrapped in the kind of heavy sonic technology that his fans have come to expect. The Blackout train has well and truly left the station already in 2017, and with the year’s debut single from Black Sun Empire featuring collaborations with Noisia and Pythius the momentum that is being gathered so early is bordering on frightening.

BSE have delivered another beautifully constructed single that blends the tough sound fans are used to with Noisia’s brains and Pythius’ brawn. The depth of knowledge and talent in tandem with BSE’s creative capacity makes the single just the adrenaline shot the scene needed to jump start the year. “The Veil” takes a more scaled back approach by pushing its energy through a souled out bassline, whilst Pythius’ influence can be heard in “Catalyst” as it swings violently, yet gracefully, through a string of hot tempered breaks.
