Elevated far above the streets in one of the towering high-rise buildings that dominated the urban heart, the sound of the high-octane pursuit below barely penetrated the bleak musty cubical. Its cigarette-stained walls are etched with the marks he’d made to signify the passing of his life in this space. The ever-present hum of building’s servers that once he’d thought faintly pleasant, oppressively penetrated his eardrums - continually evolving… scraping the inside of his brain like sonic sandpaper. Flickering lights from the city’s exterior advertisements strobed across the dark sea of cubicles, the huddled occupants of each fixated on the faint glow of their viewscreens, their enslaved minds pouring over the flow of a sea of meaningless data. The lights hurt his eyes these days, each wave illuminating his dank space peaked his migraine – like shards of glass penetrating deep into the roots of his skull and twisting within his cortex on the way. He was at the edge, hovering on the very horizon of sanity itself… the boundary blurring – what was more insane – this existence? Or the one he desired – to tear himself free from the bonds of this reality… for his heart to burn with the light of a thousand stars as he steered his body towards the purity of presence outside of this slavery… to defy the great architect and stand proud just for a moment… Just as this thought manifested, he felt the tight grip upon his shoulder - briskly pulling him around to see the corrupt, fat, distorted face of the overseer sneering down through that twisted crevice of a mouth. Those chains broke – he felt his hand grasping the keyboard that he had been so long manacled to in his mind, moving with the rotation of the chair as he rose swiftly with the roar that escaped him so fluidly. The overseer’s shocked expression froze in time as the keyboard collided with his mouth – landing with such brutal force that the shockwave passed through his fat face. With that roar, he felt free… he had found himself.
 
SEGMENT & CONCEPT VISION follow up their incredible MAMMOTH EP with their 2nd impressive outing on neurofunk’s leading label, EATBRAIN. Proving once more the exceptional skill of their combined production with the 5 heavy-duty tracks of the ROAR EP (including free release with the vocal-led ‘EMPIRE’), the pair set the bar high through their powerful sound. Whether it’s the stuttering might of title track ROAR with its nightmare fueled arpeggios, or the dub-influenced sci-fi majesty of THIRST (featuring COD3X) - each track proves more relentless than the last. The signal had flickered into existence without warning, a sudden complex sequence that almost filled the awaiting databanks within moments and laid out an array of schematics beyond comprehension. For years they labored, first to understand and then to build the machine it described, a craft that could finally escape the outermost reaches of the solar system and carry a single human beyond the limits of their star, to the point of the signal’s source. They picked the passenger with care - their most capable pilot, linguist and scientist, ascribed beyond the limits of fear through overwhelming curiosity… The journey was swift, covering that most immeasurable of distances in human terms within days. As he drew close to the origin, far from the sun and beyond the influence of the system, it appeared as a speck in the distance but quickly grew into a sight of overwhelming complexity, a vast silent ship, and static in the darkness, blotting out the light of distant stars. As the shuttle drew close, it shuddered into life, internal lights hesitating before firmly illuminating and colossal vents purged gases into the yawning nothingness of space. The vessels nestled together, extending appendages and exchanging code. With a sigh the airlock opened and sequential lighting ushered him within the vacant hulk, a faint trembling of power running through the hull and beneath his feet. He entered the endless chamber with wide pupils, so big that it receded into blackness, the overwhelming mechanism before him filling his vision – a vast sphere engineered to an impossible configuration… a pathway to the stars… the WARP DRIVE.

MALUX is an artist who surged into the drum & bass sphere suddenly in 2016, delivering a tight selection of releases on some of the leading labels in the genre and making his mark on the European live scene with rapid success. Hardheads watch out – TR Tactics are back on track! With releases on Citrus, Addictive Behaviour and Mainframe Recordings, the Austrian duo has created a devoted following and a trademark sound characterized by hard hitting drums and berserk bass lines, occasionally spiked with trancey arpeggios, dark and techy all over the place. 
Notorious for inciting early morning riots when playing live, TR Tactics expose a deeper approach to their music as well: "We had the idea of taking something melodic, dive it into Chaos and pull it out again.”
 “Vision” is about catching a glimpse on sinister times ahead that's giving you the chills, and subsequently that fear turning into rage. "Unreal" ties up to the breakout theme and illustrates finding a new perspective on such dark premonition. Breaking it down, the EP's main motive probably is the uprising, which finds its conclusion in the collab track with French Neuro-Don The Clamps. Both are known to take no prisoners, and "Maggot" is blowing down on us ignoble beings in a fury to teach us humble obedience. The final track, a collaboration with Mainframe Recordings Label Head DisasZt himself, won't exactly fit into that story, but – for the sake of contemplation – think of "Fuck It" as a stray bullet heading right to the dance floor, just about to hit the crowd all of a sudden, and this is where the unforeseeable comes full circle with the vision.

Although the Juno identity has only been around since late 2016, the Spanish producer has long been influential in the world of bass music through previous aliases Aphex and Pheex, receiving support from the likes of Krewella, Far Too Loud, Evol Intent, DJ Bl3nd, and more, as well as several award nominations from DJ Mag, International Breaks Awards, and Breakspoll.

With the massive ‘Raptor’ on last year’s ‘Summer Slammers’ compilation on Viper Recordings, followed hot on the heels with ‘Red Blocks’ (which received massive support from Insomniac) on 2018’s annual, Juno has paved the way for future success with the label, evident in ‘Akira’ and ‘Truth In The Skies’.

‘Truth In The Skies’ features the lyrical genius of Dutch native, Innate MC, known for his work with A.M.C.’s Titan Records. Another dark and gritty tune, great attention is given to the build-up of every drop, creating a sense of suspense from start to finish matched only by the tune’s incredible adrenaline.

‘Akira’ is a tech-inspired, bass heavy thumper of a track that is sure to please fans of the darker side of the genre. Deep, thudding bass backs a gritty, neuro-infused melody that constantly evolves as the track progresses, giving the track an almost haunting edge.

Santoku has already dominated US waters with their take on drum & bass, setting a standard within the American scene which has also infiltrated its sounds across the Atlantic. For the label’s next release, Instinkt steps forward after becoming a renowned name on imprints such as Red Light, Kill Tomorrow, Methlab, Lifestyle, Delta 9 and more pivotal record labels which have helped to define the underground scene. The trio bring their individual skills sets together, from their hometowns in Germany and Denmark, to present a cross pollination of styles which highlights just how diverse the drum & bass genre has become since its inception. Humanon also jumps on board, with one member of Instinkt joining the Slovakian and Czech team in destroying dancefloors with their own hard lined offering on Santoku’s forthcoming ‘Not Human’ EP. With an added collaboration from Interzeptor, a brand new outfit from Vienna, it’s one of the imprint’s most versatile, European deliveries to date.

Title-track ‘Not Human’ rolls out first, bringing together Humanon and Instinkt for a cut throat exploration of both outfit’s production standards. Its snaking LFO and clashing drums bring you into its heart, showing how both sets of artists go in hard and without limitations. Instinkt comes through next with the infamous Lifesize MC, who once again offers up his growling vocals throughout the tearaway record ‘Fiend’. You’re then introduced to ‘Fiend (VIP)’, which exhumes a welcome twist on the already snapping original, moving you into deeper waters whilst also rerouting the mix and pushing you through segments of antiquated, neuro infused breakdowns.

Finally you’re drawn into ‘Squad’ from both Instinkt & Interzeptor. It continues the EP’s hard lined approach, punching quicker layer after layer before it totally envelops you in its chaotic ways. With clanking percussion and a rhythm which chops and changes between every steppy set of drums, it’s the only way to end an EP which doesn’t turn down the volume from beginning to end. And that’s what makes this addition to Santoku’s discography so memorable. It not only presents the darker side of its talented roster, but also its expansion into the drum & bass world’s every corner.

‘Organicrime’ is just as forthcoming, pushing forward with an attitude that is unafraid and rockets through with a breakdown which makes an instant connection to both the clubs as well as neurofunk’s consumerbase.
