The corruption was slow to spread at first, infiltrating the neural tissue of only a single patient after exposure via a contaminated food supply. There it lay largely dormant for some time, merely expanding its network of control over its host’s brain without any external symptoms. Indeed, one could be forgiven for understanding the microorganism's evolutionary coding as a form of cold and calculating malevolence, akin to that of an ambush predator eagerly awaiting the perfect moment to strike. For months it bode its time, gently exerting more and more influence over its host body until it required further hosts to replicate itself further. Then, and only then, did the microorganism command its willing vessel to strike out with a ferocity that had been imbued in its form over these many moons of docile dormancy.

The first sound heard by the other patients in the wing was a tremendous rending of metal. With strength exorbitantly far beyond that of the seemingly frail old body that housed the parasitic microorganism, the host body had torn through the steel door that had kept it caged for so long. The second was a guttural and wholly inhuman shriek of success that merged quickly with the squelching of a guard’s body being pulverized against the stark white walls of the cell block’s shared hallway, and then again by bursts of gunfire from the block’s other two guards who spent their last seconds trying to quell this newly awakened beast. As bullets found their purchase in flesh, the monster’s unearthly wails grew to a defiant crescendo which all but drowned out the sounds of the two more quiet screams that followed before the host body, unbroken despite the hail of lead that had fallen upon it, took off at a sprint down the hallway and further into the bowels of the institution that had borne it into existence.

PROLIX makes his EATBRAIN debut with ZOMBIES, a two-track single that sees the accomplished artist make a triumphant entrance before the ears of the label’s faithful. Delivering a masterful display of the unrestrained Neurofunk sonics for which both himself and EATBRAIN are so well known, PROLIX finds a natural home amidst the menagerie of monstrous minds that make up the EATBRAIN horde’s leading edge.

Rumours of the infernal mechanism were rife amongst the population, that somewhere deep in the sublevels of the city it waited with the eternal patience that belongs only to machines. It was said that those people whom the system had broken, whose minds had snapped – ejecting them from the social architecture… were first incarcerated, analyzed and then taken to it to be erased completely. He was about to find out the truth of this, dragged from his metallic cell by those machine claws, his arms bound tightly across his chest and vocal chords paralyzed. He wanted to scream, terror engulfing him and winding around his vertebrae, giving birth to a black hole within the pit of his stomach... but all that emerged was a whimper of despair. It was registered by the synthetic mind and catalogued in its vast archive of variations of this moment - its casual analysis of this journey to death. The chamber was incomprehensibly vast… and it was there waiting, reaching with its threatening appendages from the shadows, its diabolical jaws enshrouded in the dull green light of a vast viewing screen displaying the symbol of the architect. The teeth started that relentless slicing, the very ground trembling through the power of its mighty workings, the mechanism to be his absolute obliteration… those claws pulling him inexorably towards the end as the viewscreen changed and flashes the word ‘goodbye’. The GRINDER completes its work. In the almost oblivious streets above, a faint rumble is felt – knowing, fearful looks are briefly exchanged before the citizens hurry on with their business.
 
Apex neuro and tech producer MAZTEK arrives with his first full EP on leading d&b label, EATBRAIN. Following up appearances on the label’s Tales of the Undead and Mirror Universe VA LP’s, the GRINDER EP sees Maztek deliver 4 tracks of high-grade dancefloor weaponry, enwrapped in the kind of heavy sonic technology that his fans have come to expect. From the tear-out but tightly wound collaboration with with June Miller in BLAFFER, to the grime-influenced and glitched vocals of GOOD QUESTION that comes in heavy with the evil bounce of its bass – the EP runs a diverse and unique flex. Title-track GRINDER delivers an appropriately punishing assault, packed with sinister sound design and brooding, dynamic riff, whilst TANGLE delivers an edgy and lightly percussive shuffle to accompany its powerful bass. They had watched silently and stealthily from the cold vacuum of space, processing the activity of the civilization on the planet designated by the prime species as ‘Earth’. Monitoring the frequencies below and this culture’s increasingly advanced, but still infant communication technologies. The enforcers of galactic order - observing and calculating the potential for breaching the rift at that critical moment of social and technological advancement at which so many races had fallen. These primes were culturally schizophrenic, with much of the race confusing universal anomalies for the supernatural whilst the elite reached ever deeper towards a true understanding of the mysteries that would unlock access to the depths of the galaxy. The exploration of volatile sonic forces both powerful and dangerous, with the potential to turn simple civilizations into dangerous swarms with the capacity to disrupt the galactic harmony. Cosmic law had been established to prevent the untold destruction these errant and infectious signals had caused in the past, to coldly, brutally and entirely annihilate those who dared to handle powers beyond their means of control. That moment had come… they were on the verge and it was not to be allowed. Drop-pods ascended from the Underverse into real time planet-wide, falling from the skies in vast numbers, crushing everything in their path, full of their deadly, precise and unstoppable cargo. The podbay doors opened, spilling the civilizational surgeons onto the planet surface, commencing their operation of maximum DAMAGE…

Taking a step back, the inventor looked upon his creation with a mixture of pride and awe. Above him towered a clockwork golem with blood of fire and skin of steel, a protector of that which he had ordained worthy of protection. It’s profile displayed the raw strength of the forges from which it had been wrought, actualized by the servos and motors which drove its mighty body forwards in lumbering motion. Atop its head roared a constant blaze, its uncontainable life energy surging forth from any available outlet in a ferocious display of raw vitality. In a contemplative moment, the inventor then looked upon himself, diminutive and weak by comparison to the champion he had created. He thought of its purpose, shedding a momentary tear for those like him who might fall under its wrathful gaze, but then shook his head with renewed resolve. “It must be done” he said to himself, “They have not the STATE OF MIND necessary to rule this world”. Turning his eyes back to the golem, the inventor set his titanic creation forth on its grim path with naught but a single nod.

With a bellowing roar of the blaze within its skull, the golem emerged from the forest of its creation in a moment of stark contrast as it began to take its creators vengeance upon the city that lay before it. It was itself a city of steel and flame, which tore relentlessly at the lands around it in an exploitative & all consuming hunger. Jets of flame shot forth from the golem’s maw as it tread upon the inferior structures beneath it, reducing that built of this hunger to the component parts it so wantonly consumed. As it stood within the inferno, the golem itself began to feel its own gnashing teeth, the heat of the flames slowly stripping its steel skin to the bone. With a final titanic roar the golem reached a point of criticality, exploding in a massive gout of flame and molten shrapnel which leveled all that remained of what had once been the great city. Watching from high within the forest, the inventor nodded his head in a farewell to his creation, assured by it’s ultimate cry that this land was safe once again from those who would do it harm.


STATE OF MIND returns to EATBRAIN with four reimaginings of their past tracks by themselves and others within the harder side of Drum & Bass. Receiving a flip by Italian neurofunk trio IHR is the notorious collab with label boss Jade 'HIGHLANDER', which features the addition of a motive & fluid reece bassline atop the track’s already driving drumbeat for a dancefloor devastating sonic combination. STATE OF MIND themselves present a VIP of GIANT, which smashes forth on massive drums accentuated by simultaneous bass stabs in a titanic sprint beneath detuned tonal sprites. BYPASS is remixed by MOB TACTICS, whom bypass nothing as they push the track into overdrive in a flurry of furious basses, frenetic arpeggios and brief moments of levity provided by snippets of vocals. Closing the EP is the SYNERGY remix of TIME SLIP FT. KRYPTOMEDIC, which rides the MC’s narration upwards in an ever intensifying crescendo towards a distorted realm of metallic basses that rocket out above their electrified companions and an unstoppable drumbeat. In all, the STATE OF MIND REMIXES morph some of the prolific duo’s most powerful track on EATBRAIN into monstrous new forms, setting them up for further dominance on future dancefloors.
