Drum & bass stalwarts Black Sun Empire are to follow up a trio of recent EPs from The Upbeats, Neonlight and Pythius with the release of ‘Until The World Ends’ - a five-track, collaborative EP with NZ duo State Of Mind. To be released on January 26th via their genre-defining Blackout imprint, it marks an exciting start to 2015.

Lead track ‘Ego’ immediately sets the tone with growling bass lines and punchy synth-stabs that underpin dark, techy atmospherics and vocal loops.

Second track ‘Until The World Ends’ proves once again both acts’ enduring versatility - kicking off with a bass-heavy dubstep tones complimented by vocal duties from State Of Mind’s fellow New Zealander PNC, before

switching to a manic, intelligently structured groove for the remainder.

‘Bad’ opens with progressive percussion and softly-worked synths that move euphorically to a pounding drum break, whilst fourth track ‘Jack Nicholson’, featuring an imitable sample of the man himself, is a bass-fuelled shockwave of a track. Final track.

‘Moonbox’ closes the EP in true Blackout fashion, with signature frenetic beats and firing drums rounding off proceedings in style.

Black Sun Empire have built a reputation for curating their own brand of dark, neurofunk-inspired drum & bass over the past 12 months and this collaboration with long term accomplices State Of Mind - whom released their latest album ‘Eat The Rich’ via the label earlier this year - feeds into the hype surrounding Blackout as the label looks ahead to 2015.

It began as a whisper, spoken in low tones in multiple languages in the uneasy night. Talk of a place where the greatest of mecha roam, gathering amongst the desolate ruins of a war prepared for and never fought. The first explorers returned with stories of low frequency weapons, harvested from the ruined depths of a subterranean complex. With these re-engineered into towering relays capable of pure sonic carnage, the lands began filling rapidly with pilgrims from distant places, offering themselves as captives to their own higher mental states. What was once a mere whisper has now become legend, with this meeting of the mightiest clans bringing forth the greatest frequency warriors to stake out their claims. 

EATBRAIN casts a long shadow across the fray, setting seasoned label veterans L 33 and MINDSCAPE into the hordes of adrenaline-fuelled ravers alongside recent label additions MACHINECODE and AGRESSOR BUNX - all of whom have LPs coming on the label as well as appearing at the festival. A tight manifesto is stretched across the 4 rowdy and high-energy tracks that make up the EATBRAIN GOES TO LET IT ROLL, with the irresistible audio manipulative skills of Eatbrain crafted to exquisitely tear up the dance. Deep within the core of their sprawling annex, The Institution’s top minds worked diligently at their insidious craft. Their hands moved swiftly, as they worked relentlessly with the sharp tools of their mind; warping words, images, and sounds to fit their malevolent narrative. Their objective was singular, complete control exercised from the shadows, profits reaped from beyond the veil of obscurity. Trust, that most hallowed principle, was nothing to them but a tool of manipulation, exercised to to legitimize their empire. The plan was simple, a classic diversion operated on a massive scale. The creation of an enemy, the eternal outsider, one against whom the public must remain vigilant. Composed of a paradox, the outsider posed no threat, yet could never be vanquished. Instead, his reputation and the shadow of his fearful influence would loom as a spectre, a shade of darkness designed to haunt the masses. Their fear would drive them into the protection of The Institution, shepherded in the manner of livestock. From there, the extension of their complete control would be assured. The machinations of its minds completed, The Institution began its program of domination in full, disseminating its precisely produced PROPAGANDA amongst the public.

Their message was erected upon the walls of their great city, proliferated throughout the mailboxes of its citizens, and across the webpages of it their tightly controlled digital network. Their message spread with viral efficiency. The citizens’ response was sublimely realised, a surge of fear through the populace, shepherding them into the arms of The Institute as they sought security in the face of the threat birthed in pure imagination. Security, The Institution was more than happy to provide; promising strength in the face of the mysterious menace. The Institution’s agents felt the power of their positions strengthen throughout the city, soon holding its highest offices in their grip, putting greater tools of control in their hands. Initiatives were passed, laws enacted, and the vaults of the city drained. The streets were the conduit of their fear, their PROPAGANDA campaign continuing in the fearful whispers of the citizens carrying the fear of The Outsider’s presence. The cycle was set, justification freely given out of fear. The Institute’s diabolic machinations ran as pure as the fear that coursed through the city.

The man pulling the strings behind the revered EATBRAIN imprint, JADE, returns for his second release of the year on his home label with the fiercely executed PROPAGANDA EP, featuring the veteran skills of RIDO. Following on from the much-acclaimed AWAKE EP, Jade powerfully demonstrates that he’s back in the studio and putting his veteran knowledge of what functions on the Eatbrain dancefloor to effective use. Delivering two fresh, tech-infused DnB bangers, along with a faster tempo VIP of fan favourite MAN EATING LIZARD DRAGON, as well as a further strut in the unfolding genre mechanism of slow and meaty neuro in SPY CAR, the PROPAGANDA EP delivers the Eatbrain manifesto in exquisite form. “At last, you arrive” echoed the thunderous voice that seemed to originate from the body of the temple itself. “You have displayed power, spirit, strength, and soul in getting this far, but should you wish to gain access to the hidden knowledge of this great temple, you must now face the final trial which bears no name. Precious few have reached this point, and what remains of them is now scattered across the four winds that rake at this mountain peak. Prepare yourself, adventurer, for the final trial is me.”

In reflexive response to these resounding words, the adventurer steeled themselves and braced for the impact that was sure to follow. But none such occurred, and the only assault on the adventurer’s defenses was that of unexpected silence that stung at their nerves. Still on guard, they dwelled deeper within the silence, peering into its misty recesses. There, obscured by the gusts which grazed this mountaintop, yes, there was something. The faintest sound of flesh on stone, moving slowly through the cool mountain air. Yet no creature lay before them.

Then came the shattering, a sound of incomprehensible magnitude that shot the adventurer into motion. The stone courtyard splintered before them, driving jagged shards of stone like knives beneath the adventurers feet. With a powerful leap the adventurer shot into the air, remaining suspended in levitation, a technique they had learned within the previous trial. Below them, the mountain continued to crumble and the temple fell away, revealing a magnificent serpentine form in a shower of boulders and stone slabs. Rising from the body of the mountain itself was a massive dragon, unlike any the adventurer had heard tell of even within the tales of old, and upon its head stood a shadowy form, an equal to the aura of the adventurer’s own light.

“I have kept the knowledge of this temple for thousands of years” came the voice once more, sharpened by its exposure to the alpine atmosphere. “I will not have some impudent fool steal it from me”. The great dragon reared back at its rider's command, and the adventurer concentrated their energy into a great spectral claw to match. There, the adventurer understood. Win or lose, they had gained the knowledge of the temple that they sought. This they knew in their core as they drew in to prepare a great gout of flame that would match the great dragons own.
