Already firmly established as one of Europe’s leading taste-maker drum & bass labels, Blackout follow Telekinesis’ rip-roaring ‘Fight Club’ EP with Edge – a collaborative five tracker from German duo Neonlight & fellow German producer Wintermute.

Set for release on March 29th, ‘Edge’ adopts a diverse approach to the genre by moving away from the neurofunk style Blackout have become synonymous with, to craft something altogether harder, darker and edgier. Lead track ‘Guinea Pig’ is all broken beat, sharp synths and raging percussion, whilst ‘Influx’ works more conventional drum & bass rhythm, amidst a darker, almost gothic backdrop. Neonlight – having already released twice via Blackout – and Wintermute also extend their collaborative imagination on the lighter ‘Posthuman’ with faded, bleepy news-bulletin interludes serving as just one example of how intricate and well-balanced their sound design is right across the EP.

Given the vibrancy and darker, club-ready feel of ‘Edge’, Neonlight & Wintermute thus feel like natural choices to continue Blackout’s fast-building legacy and further cement themselves as some of Europe’s go-to drum & bass producers.

Hailing from Toulouse, French trio Signs have already carved themselves out an interesting niche within the nu-skool neuro scene, stamping their unique output into the public’s consciousness with big releases on Red Light Records, Bad Taste Recordings, C4C Recordings, and RAM Records

Their beats are sparse and militant with each drum hit afforded the space to dominate the audio spectrum, with pauses and moments of silence, delicately programmed into the DNA of the drum tracks, playing big part in the groove’s forward momentum, propelling the riddims forward and creating a dynamically powerful and compelling backbone for the rugged, tough basslines to shine.

The tunes are punctuated with wild Reese fluctuations and sci-fi sound effects reminiscent of the Wormhole-esq techstep from the end of the last century, with dark atmospherics ushering each trackdown the rabbit hole and into the dank, hellishbasements of debauchery that tunes like these call home.

EATBRAIN gain another slick addition to the collective, with the latest release landing from relatively fresh Antwerp-based duo,
HYPOXIA (Titan Records // DnB Arena). Members Athys and Syntopia craft a brand of Tech and Neuro DnB with a bleak
aesthetic influenced by the more sinister areas of Psychology. The ‘ANOVA’ EP takes its name from the Analysis Of Variance
statistical method, with the change here being the sinister journey into an internal void during the inception of its components.

‘PSYCHOSIS’ hits straight with its crisp percussion and cutting snare - the drum phrase accented by a hypnotizing Technoinfluenced
plucked synth. A build-up arrives like a Nitrous Oxide-fuelled descent into a single point of madness, before coming up
with fists swinging into its abrasive groove and evolution into a relentless wall of carefully crafted distortion. ‘Psychosis’ provides an
overwhelming vortex of filth with an agenda to disturb the mind and take control of the feet.

Some of the rowdiest drum 'n' bass of the last five years has come courtesy of Austrian producer Mefjus (pictured). 

Tilt Recordings, Mindtech and Disturbed were a few of the labels his earliest work was released on and in 2012 he hooked up with tech-infected d'n'b purveyors Critical Recordings for the first time. That was the cutthroat Enei collaboration 'Crawlers' and he released his debut album, 'Emulation', on the Kasra-founded imprint last year.

Night has fallen, the threat of extinction riding on the edge of its transition. Decaying and contorted faces of the undead leer from the shadows, twisted limbs reaching from the darkness towards the eternal signal - driven to crush its subversive broadcast and extinguish the final beacon. A single being stands in their way - the strongest of his kind, the last of a genetic line extending into a derelict past with an imperative to preserve the future. An arsenal of sonic weaponry residing within the lines of his palms, drawn forth through the ancient forms manifested by long-dead masters. His swift movement amongst the shuffling army is efficient - acute strikes snap limbs, raw concentrated power crushes bone, low-frequency techniques leaving little behind from the weight of brutal molecular disruption. With the rising of the sun, only he remains – the broken dead lying scattered and without motion – the focused power of his fighting form has prevailed… the signal is preserved.
