Chicago - land of contrasts. The birthplace of Drill and the home of famed heterochromatic IG baddie ‘Ash Kaash’, the city of inedible Deep Pan Pizza and delicious Malort; Chicago has until now had little to no impact on dance music beyond some fringe developments in the late 80s, of little consequence to anyone outside the greater Kankakee area.

This is all set to change, with the arrival of KEEFE's ‘Gunman Groove’ EP on No More Mailouts, four tracks of Italian Beef bangers, ‘CHIEFLY’ inspired by - and you knew this joke was coming - Lil Durk.

‘Amen Rework’ combines Gabba-esque kicks with rinsing Amen breaks and hardcore stabs, but is way better than that sounds - Franklie, it’s as tuff as Knuckles.

Title track ‘Gunman Groove’ again takes classic Rave stabs, this time layering them over a pounding 4/4 kick pattern. If only there was a name for this kind of rhythmic pattern - but whatever that may be, it would sound great in a Warehouse.

Looping hypnotic synth-lines define ‘Let A Clip Ride’, a hypnotic roller that is well worth a Spinn…

And closing things out, ‘Let There Be House' bemoans the lack of affordable accommodation options in late-stage capitalism. Here at No More Mailouts, we Stan any producer who can Sneak a political message into the dance.

So here we have it Chicago - your time to finally become known for EDM! Let there be rejoicing from Waukegan to Rockford!!! And let there be dwelling place music!!!!!

Hotdogg is the first raindrop flickering in the neon-heated, forgotten alleys of night-time Tokyo, an ephemeral reminiscence of a summer you never experienced, yet you know it intimately, a Friday rave of teenagers in their parents’ garage. Come choose, and you’ll get an extra portion.

With roots in dub soundsystem sessions and years of tireless organising of electronic parties under the banner of Haze Boys (https://hearthis.at/haze-boys/), as well as recording varied radio sessions for Threads radio, he has returned in his later years to his beloved breaks.

This remix by Bristol legend and Swamp81 resident Lamont flips the original to a minimalistic, percussion driven UK bass weapon.

WZ & Magugu - Movin' Sharp (Lamont Remix)

Moving away from the mellower, Far East-influenced ‘Taiko’ EP from 2017 on the label, the Manchester producer exemplifies his range of sound with four weighty and moody tracks heavily focused on the dancefloor.

Elements of dubstep run through the EP, especially on the title track with its floor-shaking bass rumbles, accompanied by skitterings of percussion and warped cries of ‘murder’. In line with KAIZEN’s ethos, the rest of EP fuses elements of techno and grime to devastating effect, layered with spacey atmospherics and off-kilter rhythms.

With love already shown by Ben UFO, Pinch, Loefah, Object Blue and Klose One, there’s no doubt Walton’s destructive club cuts will be getting plenty of minutes in the dance.

The ‘Murdah’ EP follows Walton’s ferocious ‘Inside’ EP on Pinch’s Tectonic Recordings and his debut album ‘Black Lotus’ on the same label in 2018.

Rudimentary debuts for Itoa and Crypticz as they combine to producer a solid 4 track dub, techno, footwork, ghetto inspired drum n bass 12”. 

Alex Godoy (Itoa) and Jordan Parsons (Crypticz) couldn’t help but cross paths as both their musical influences encapsulate the continuous blur between Dubstep, Drum n Bass and footwork with Dub being the keystone to their musical arch. 

Crypticz was sucked into the vortex of the uniquely punchy sounds that Itoa had put out and was itching to find out more. At the same time he was pushing the foundations of his on sound, which has Dub.

Jordan (Crypticz) found himself wanting after toying with a few ideas which fell into line with a more dancehall sensibility. He felt the ideas he had, needed something else. He was struggling to put his finger on exactly what was missing, then… enter Itoa’s ‘French Cola and “Peng” releases. Bingo! Jordans finger was now pointed at Alex’s (Itoa) irresistibly joyous drum patterns, and thought… “This guy”, with the happy egg face as a facebook profile, is the man to unlock this business. The pair hooked up and from there worked on the 31 Recordings “MTD” release for Doc Scott. 

After their work together on that beast of a record they wanted to get back to it! Email tennis and facebook chats occurred for some time all the while passing bits and pieces back and fourth. Each time asking questions and encouraging the process for one another. 

Street Drinker was the starting point with Alex leaving it open and sparse for Jordan to roll in with percussion. Dub techniques where leaned on to add a techno, dubstep feel to Valis. 

An instructional dance video was the inspirational magic dust added to the already grounded baseline and obnoxious claps in “How it’s Done”. Jordan admits watching too much Adventure Time was the catalyst for the humours concept of this piece. So… ’come ons', 'shake it' and '1,2,3,4' were sampled from various work out videos and the arrangement tidied up from there. 

Manatata wraps the release up with a dubby roller with erupts with texture and intricate drum patterns and driving kick.

Crypticz & Itoa - How It's Done

Established in 2015, eatmybeat is a hybrid record label & club brand dedicated to feeding the underground with tasty riddims. Refusing to be pigeonholed into a specific sound, our vibe is best categorised as the intersection of weighty techno, breaky 2-step and 140 pressure.
