In this first episode of EAVcast, three 9th-grade students discuss the need for a greener attitude. Brunella, Antonia, and Julia reflect on their volunteering experiences, how their perspectives on the relationship between them (and humankind) and the environment have changed, and connect that to texts read throughout the quarter in ELA: "Songs to the Turtles in the Gulf" by Linda Hogan, "Quiet Town" by Jason Gurley, and "Sea Also Rises" by Ron Cassie.

1. A Green Mind with Antonia, Brunella, and Julia

In this second episode, 9th-grade students discuss the interaction between the local community and coastal life. They described the steps taken to find a couple of volunteering experiences and the learning they got from all the trash they identified and collected. Interwoven in their insights and discussion, they made connections with texts read throughout the quarter in ELA: "Lee Sherman and the Toxic Louisiana Bayou" by Dr. Arlie Hochschild and "Song for the Turtles in the Gulf" by Linda Hogan.

2. Coastal Life and Our Community with Ana Beatriz, Brunela, and Gabriela

In this third episode, a couple of 9th graders focus on simple actions that show how individual actions can affect the environment around them. Sofia and Valentina give an overview of the negative interaction between people and the environment and describe a handful of easily acquired habits we can incorporate into our routine. They go over a frequently forgotten element when discussing eco-friendly actions: household waste oil storage and disposal.

3. What About Oil? with Sofia and Valentina

In this fourth episode, a trio of 9th-grade students decided to reflect on a part of the environment that is close to many of us: domestic animals. Isabella, Sophia, and Victor share their volunteering experience with the local NGO Gatinhos da Pedra da Cebola and an interview with one of its founders, Barbara. They discuss the role of the NGO in the community and bring up data about animal mistreatment and abandonment in Brazil in order to raise awareness about the topic.

4. SOS Cats with Isabella, Sophia, and Victor

In this fifth episode, another couple of students discuss their views on the environment and how their volunteering experience affected them. Giovanna and Luiza go over the connections they built between the learning they got from volunteering at Projeto Tamar and the first non-fiction text of the unit, “Lee Sherman and Toxic Louisiana Bayou” by Dr. Arlie Hochschild. They wrapped it up by challenging listeners to a trivia game on alarming stats about the current environmental situation.

5. Sustainable Talk with Giovanna and Luiza

In this sixth episode, three 9th-graders speak out about common points of view about the interaction between people and the environment. Davi, Eric, and Guilherme wonder about individual and collective responsibility around us and connect it to the unit’s text “Lee Sherman and Toxic Louisiana Bayou” by Dr. Arlie Hotchshild and “He-y, Come On Ou-t!” by Shinichi Hoshi. They also reflect on their personal experiences with volunteering and raise some questions for listeners to think about.

6. Stop Being Selfish with Davi, Eric, and Guilherme

This is a school-wide project in Escola Americana de Vitória, where students have the opportunity to share their experiences and projects in an alternative medium, in English and Portuguese. Found in June 2022, piloted by 9th-grade students.
