Plastics have been a defining feature of contemporary life since at least the 1960s. Yet our proliferating use of plastics has also triggered catastrophic environmental consequences. Plastics are derived from petrochemicals and enmeshed with the global oil economy, and they permeate our consumer goods and their packaging, our clothing and buildings, our bodies and minds. In this first episode of a two-part series, contributors to the volume LIFE IN PLASTIC: ARTISTIC RESPONSES TO PETROMODERNITY discuss plasticity and myth, stretchy superheroes, how plastic became gendered, plastic as a colonizing force, plastic in art and everyday life, and more. Featuring Caren Irr, Lisa Swanstrom, Jennifer Wagner-Lawlor, and Daniel Worden.

Caren Irr is a professor of English at Brandeis University and author of Toward the Geopolitical Novel, Pink Pirates, and The Suburb of Dissent.

Lisa Swanstrom is an associate professor of English at the University of Utah, coeditor of Science Fiction Studies, and author of Animal, Vegetable, Digital.

Jennifer A. Wagner-Lawlor is professor of English and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at Pennsylvania State University. She is author of Postmodern Utopias and co-curator of Plastic Entanglements.

In the second in our series on the Trans Carrier nurdle spill, we speak with Thomas Sturgeon, of ITOPF. ITOPF is an international marine pollution consultancy and is Gard’s go to expert for advice in the aftermath of casualties involving pollution of all types. Nurdles are the building blocks for plastic products and are about the size and shape of a lentil. Thomas provides insight into the difficulty of the Trans Carrier clean-up due to the small size of nurdles and the wide disbursement.

Given the nature of ambisonics, you can easily convert these B Format files onto any desired format (like regular stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 surround) with the correct plug-in, like RØDE’s own Soundfield, which happens to be free to download. These are raw recordings where little to no hum or hiss removal techniques were applied.

Natural resource depletion occurs when resources are consumed at a faster rate than replacement. Natural resources are those resources that exist without human actions and can be renewable or non-renewable.

And when it comes to the discussion of natural resource depletion, it is terminology used in reference to water use, agriculture, fossil fuel consumption, fishing, and mining. And, above all, the depletion of natural resources is defined on the premise that the value of a resource is measured in terms of its availability in nature.

As a consequence of the global industrialization process, the temperature in the atmosphere has been increasing at a rate historically unknown in recent decades, due to the greenhouse effect caused by the emission of gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Global warming is a fundamental aspect for future agriculture, which is affecting fruits and vegetables, agriculture in general and Mediterranean agriculture in its entirety, so it will be very important to adequately adapt the agricultural sector in order to ensure production food.

Effects of Global Warming on the Growth of Tomatoes

In this week’s episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Rodney Rowland, the director of facilities and environmental sustainability at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. As his job title indicates, one of Rowland’s main responsibilities at the museum is to focus on environmental sustainability. He’s helping to implement a proactive adaptation strategy for the facilities at Strawbery Banke, which is rich in history and uniquely tied to its physical location, as the nine-acre living-history museum contends with the risks posed by climate change. Rowland and Hayes discuss the perils of sea level rise in historic preservation, and how institutions that face this problem (ranging from the Smithsonian museum and research complex in Washington, DC; to the Maritime Museum in Jakarta, Indonesia; to Strawbery Banke in New Hampshire) are making plans to safeguard their treasures.
