Radio GAMeC - the project emerged in 2020 during the healthcare emergency via the social media channels of the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Bergamo, and recognized by UNESCO as one of the best museum initiatives in the world to emerge during the first lockdown — returns with a new season.

Dedicated to the institution’s anniversary, Radio GAMeC 30 is conceived as an observatory over the changes that have shaped the last 30 years of history. Starting from the point of view of personalities from the world of art and culture who have lived through the experiences of the last three decades first hand, with the aim of recounting aspects of a complex and changing reality, Radio GAMeC 30 proposes a journey in stages, guided by director Lorenzo Giusti and curator Ilaria Gianni.

From the birth of the World Wide Web in 1991 to the fall of Kabul in 2021, passing through the cloning of Dolly the sheep in 1996 and Black Lives Matter in 2013, Radio GAMeC 30 presents a schedule of 30 appointments, one for each year, in a narrative marked by events that, for historical-political, technical-scientific, social or environmental reasons, have represented the opening of a new path or a fracture in a common path.

A piece created for my final project, part of a proposed series about migratory birds, focusing on particular species and looking at their seasonal journeys, the threats against them, and the people who are fighting to protect them and their habitats. Further episodes could look at white storks, nightingales, swifts, swallows and others.
This episode would form a two-parter. The first traces the turtle dove’s journey on its flyways from its wintering grounds in Sub-Saharan Africa to its European nesting sites. It looks at the gauntlet doves run as they pass through bird-hunting hotspots, focusing on Malta, which is the only EU country that still allows spring hunting. It also looks at the threat they face in terms of habitat loss here in the UK. Along the way, I speak to members of the Committee Against Bird Slaughter, Birdlife Malta and Operation Turtle Dove. And I visit one of the last strongholds of the turtle dove in England - Knepp Reserve in Sussex, to find the bird and record its famed purring call.
