Alongside Ed Rush, Matt Quinn (who you’ll undoubtedly know better under his DJ name, Optical) has helped sculpt the drum & bass scene’s multifarious experimentations for nearly two decades now. As producers they pioneered the techstep sound, making crisp and explosive d&b sing on the defining Wormhole album, but as bosses of Virus Recordings they’ve managed to continually stay propulsive releasing music from people like Audio, Optiv & BTK, The Upbeats, Noisia and many many more. A mainstay here, the duo’s forceful and dominating sets are always surefire highlights which is why, ahead of their set headlining Room Two this Friday, we asked Optical to put together an hour long mix which demonstrates a) why we hold them in such high regard and b) why Optical’s still one of the most quietly inventive production forces in modern drum & bass.

Optical - FABRICLIVE Promo Mix

Hailing from Leicester, Jamie Cope has made a swirling impact on the realm of drum and bass since he got bitten by the bug back in his early teens. Establishing his Smokin’ Riddims label as an outlet in 2007 he’s since released his own productions on labels like Innerground, Propaganda and Blueprint as well as on Ganja Records - which is when Cope first began working with the iconic DJ Hype with his Driller Killer and Origins of a Rudeboy EPs catching Hype’s ear. Last year Jaydan further cemented the relationship, releasing the Journeys EP on Playaz and he’s emphatically underlining that partnership ahead of his next appearance here, at the Playaz Easter Special this Friday, with this half hour blast of drum & bass put together in anticipation of the event.

Jaydan - FABRICLIVE x Playaz Mix

As a prelude to the upcoming Soul:ution Room Two takeover on Friday 16th May, label boss Marcus Intalex and one of Manchester’s most reliable renegade emcees, DRS, have bumped consciousness and put together this, their ‘Mid Mic Crisis’ mix. Regular sparring partners in clubs the world over, DRS’ trademark measured Mancuian flow rides perfectly atop on Intalex’s soulful selection with his baritone delivery sitting sweetly and filling out the dynamic range of the rolling selections which reportedly feature, in some form, material from DRS’ forthcoming second album, Mid Mic Crisis.

Basically it’s a glorious and specifically tailored 62 minute mixtape showcase of DRS’ potency as a host, an emcee and a vocalist. But it comes mixed by Intalex which more than hints at the level of quality it contains... two of Manchester's finest in sterling form.

Like a lot of dudes, Majistrate started out on back in the early 90s DJing jungle and drum & bass music on pirate radio stations whilst making his own music to fill in the gaps. Suffice to say he’s come a long way since those days, having worked with numerable labels producing and releasing drum & bass music that inspires and commands movement and or audience participation. He’s spent the best part of two decades figuring out an arsenal of music and as such he’s the perfect person to be invited to play at Playaz in Room One. So when he offered to lace us with a mixtape in the run up to his next appearance on Friday 27th June, that knowing kind of full mouth smile started growing in due anticipation…

Majistrate - FABRICLIVE x Playaz Mix

Boasting a lot of talent across a wide range of styles, David Pearson (aka Hydro), has been making waves and releasing records since 2003 when his long celebrated collaborations with drum & bass legend, Break, first appeared on Fierce’s Quarantine label. Since his humble roots holding down a residency at a d&b club night in Plymouth, where he was studying, Pearson’s gone on to play all over the world with his own productions finding favour with labels like Metalheadz, Dispatch, Commercial Suicide, Critical and more.

Ahead of his upcoming appearance in Room Two a week on Friday, when he’s set to go back to back with DLR, Pearson kindly put together this 70 minute mix to give us a better idea about the music he loves and the way he plays.
