Amsterdam-based duo Know V.A. is one of the voices in the current renaissance of Dutch early hardcore. 

Driven by the search for the new, the two producers strip down the hard dance music they know until only the core principles remain. With the sheen of brute violence removed, a softer and more intricate existence appears. Their music is synthetic. For the duo, this unnatural sound aligns with people’s obsession to control and manufacture the world around them. 

The new record ‘Strange Days’ on Signal Life tells a story about a disintegrating world in which its inhabitants are paralyzed by the weight of impending doom. Whether it’s global warming, a potential nuclear war or a crumbling society. 

“With this record we tried to grasp some of this zeitgeist, as well as picture a possible future. While there’s hope; the end is in sight. How does contemporary music sound like amidst this realization? It definitely brings forward a certain recklessness. It’s strange days now.” 

Over the last years, Know V.A. have gained an international reputation. In between touring Asia and Europe, they’ve hosted a series of 'Strange Days' club nights in Amsterdam, which seeks to showcase contemporary hardcore and explore how the genre, sonically and aesthetically has remained active in the underground. Their aim is to create a cross-cultural event, by making surprising combinations of source and inspiration, older and newer names, Dutch and international talent next to each other on the line-up.

Marco Colocci is an Italian producer and sound engineer based in Berlin. Learning how to play the contrabass and music theory has initiated the growth of his interest in the techniques of field recording and sound design, as well as his overall passion for electronic music. After self-releasing music during his teens, and later producing for Taiwanese artist Sabiwa from Chinabot, under the moniker Queimada he now presents a debut record coming out on Gin&Platonic.

Built around a concept proposed by Harvard professor E.O. Wilson, Eremocene depicts a future state of miserable epoch into which human species is slowly but steadily accelerating. Characterized by the existential & material isolation that comes from having calamitously extinguishing other forms of life on Earth while intrepidly fulfilling our immediate needs, the future labeled as The Age of Loneliness sees our identity completely transformed.
On the record, Queimada explores precisely the conflict between the tempting ease and a pang of unconfessed guilt in an attempt to capture the ironical relationship they epitomize. The album represents an encounter between different techniques of granular synthesis and field recording. The encounter between the unstoppable and destructive, altogether resulting in a disruptive anthem of the intensifying burden of the postmodern times.

We kick off 2020 with @realvanboom 'MORFEUS' which manifests sounds drawn from early 2000s bass music and industrial club, with the bullheaded desire to create floor-shattering tracks.

'MORFEUS' is influenced primarily by the horror media that had stuck with Van Boom since childhood, namely 'Resident Evil'. By channeling the feel of those works, Van Boom has coloured the complexity of this EP's raw drums with dread and aggression.

Also featuring unique and shattering remixes from @mynameisbulma, @ansystem, & @thegn-joynet.

Today, we're glad to host the 71st mix in our GUESTMIX series, presenting a slasher mixture of club and metal courtesy of whiterose. Spanning from Lyon, France, whiterose is a multidisciplinary artist who deals with violent and aggressive music integrated by edgy and sharp visual art of his own production. Among the most inspired producers in the underground scene, he brings to the altar of contemporary hybrid club the iconoclastic drive typical of Industrial music, arrayed in dark and epic atmospheres borrowed from heavy guitar-oriented genres.

The artist is author of several bulk tracks that surfaced in the last couple of years, each of them pushing forward and refining his unprecedented sound poetics that balances hardcore techno, all sorts of metal styles, and the finest sound design craftsmanship. Those are accompanied by a handful of EPs and collaborative works with many akin musicians like WULFFLUW XCIV, Tristan, and Migu, who joined forces in amazing examples of harsh, hostile, and yet participatory club-oriented electronic music.

Often providing vocals to his own tracks, whiterose crafts eerie soundscapes of an obscure virtual/industrial world where emotions flow seamlessly from the producer's heart directly to the listeners' bowel. Lyrics about self-destruction, pain, and bloodthirsty, ecstatic joy cut through the thick layer of roaring explosions, digital slashes, and distorted samples in which every whiterose's composition is embedded, as loud as it can get. Be sure to get back to this mix times and times over so you won't miss all the good that comes from a lil' picnic in the darkness of your soul. Embrace death and life eternal.
