टोमोइकु मिडिल स्कूल का परीक्षा कक्ष सामान्य से थोड़ा अलग तनाव से भरा हुआ था। इसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं था—इस स्कूल में छात्र जोड़े में परीक्षा देते हैं, और उनका पास या फेल होना भी साथ-साथ तय होता है। इस अनोखे प्रारूप ने परीक्षार्थियों के बीच पहले से कहीं अधिक गहरे संबंध और दबाव पैदा कर दिए थे।

उनमें से एक जुड़वाँ जोड़ी विशेष ध्यान आकर्षित कर रही थी। हारुतो और कानोन का शरीर का ढांचा एक जैसा था, लेकिन उनके भाव और माहौल बिल्कुल विपरीत थे।

हारुतो ने आत्मविश्वास से मुस्कुराते हुए अपनी बाँहें मोड़ लीं।
“जोड़ी परीक्षा? हमारे लिए तो यह आसान है। अगर तुम गलती करोगी, तो मैं उसे संभाल लूँगा।”

कानोन ने चिंतित होकर भौंहें सिकोड़ लीं और अपनी मेज की ओर देखते हुए धीरे से कहा।
“…अगर मैं तुम्हें नीचे खींच दूँ तो? तुम भी तो परफेक्ट नहीं हो, हारुतो।”

उनकी बातचीत सुनकर पर्यवेक्षक शिक्षक मुस्कुराए।
“जुड़वाँ होना हमेशा पूर्ण तालमेल का मतलब नहीं होता। महत्वपूर्ण बात है एक-दूसरे पर भरोसा करना।”

परीक्षा शुरू हुई। विषय था जोड़ी-चर्चा समस्या: दोनों को मिलकर बात करनी थी और दिए गए कार्य का उत्तर निकालना था। कार्य था: “अगर आप एक नया खेल का मैदान बनाएँ, तो सबसे अच्छा विचार क्या होगा?”

हारुतो उत्साह से बोला।
“एक खेल क्षेत्र बहुत अच्छा होगा! मैं एक बास्केटबॉल कोर्ट बनाना चाहता हूँ जहाँ सब खेल सकें।”

कानोन ने एक पल हिचकिचाया, फिर दृढ़ता से कहा।
“लेकिन छोटे बच्चे या जो खेलों में अच्छे नहीं हैं, उन्हें भी जगह चाहिए, है ना? चित्र बनाने या किताबें पढ़ने के लिए एक कोना अच्छा होगा…”

“वह बहुत साधारण लगता है! यह तो खेल का मैदान है!” हारुतो ने आवाज ऊँची की।

“…तो चलो साथ में सोचते हैं। एक खेल का मैदान जहाँ आप सक्रिय रह सकें, लेकिन शांति से समय भी बिता सकें—हम इसे कैसे डिज़ाइन कर सकते हैं?” कानोन का स्वर गंभीर था।

हारुतो कुछ देर चुप रहा, फिर बुदबुदाया।
“जानती हो… ऐसा स्थान अच्छा हो सकता है। मैं भी शायद कभी-कभी वहाँ जाऊँ।”

जुड़वाँ आखिरी मिनट तक बहस करते रहे और अंत में यह प्रस्ताव प्रस्तुत किया:
“‘गतिशीलता और शांति का खेल का मैदान’—एक जगह जहाँ आप उपकरणों और कोर्ट के साथ शरीर को सक्रिय कर सकते हैं, जबकि दूसरे क्षेत्र में कला और संगीत का आनंद ले सकते हैं। पारदर्शी दीवारें क्षेत्रों को अलग करती हैं, ताकि आप एक-दूसरे को देख सकें और नई रुचियाँ खोज सकें।”

परीक्षा के बाद, हारुतो ने धीरे से कानोन से कहा।
“तुम्हारा विचार आखिरकार इतना बुरा नहीं था।”

कानोन मुस्कुराई और जवाब दिया।
“मैं वही कह पाई जो मैं चाहती थी क्योंकि तुम मेरे साथ थे।”

परिणाम घोषित होने के दिन, दोनों ने साथ में लिफाफा खोला। अंदर लिखा था “पास।”

His hand locked on her leather sleeve—
Her kick slams the speakers like a fight
