To drink the «Ladoga» cranberry tincture after the beer. To swing around the city in something defiantly colorful instead of the usual mourning black. To move from Kreuzberg neighbourhood of Berlin to Longinovskaya street in Lefortovo. To eat a hot pepper with marshmallows in chocolate. To cut off your luxurious tresses and shave your head. Finally, stop rooting for the club from the Premier League and start supporting with all your heart the «Torpedo» football team from Lyubertsy.

None of these events comes close to the contrasts of the full vinyl mix recorded for us by Ilya Sheiman, co-founder of the Alt community, sound producer and our dearest friend.

‘And where should we go’ — live-recorded album by Homeless dog, the psychedelic electro-acoustic duo consisting of a screech of saxophone and electric guitar, vocals, synthesizers and ethnic instruments, in which Vladimir Sidorov and Ilya Sheyman study various forms of absurdity and chaos, scream and freeze, uprooting everything that is dug into the depths of thoughts and feelings. 

The musicians of the duo speak about the album as follows: 

“The war has come, which we did not want, were afraid of, which we are fighting against and which we hate. Up to this day, it keeps us awake at night, haunts us on the way to school or work, guards nearby grocery stores and on the subway, seeps into people's faces and rots, infecting their internal organs. Others lose their homes and loved ones, migrating all over the world in search of space and safety and do not know where to go. 

We don't know where we should go either. This live recording is our hour-long story about the feeling of being lost and empty, when there is nothing you can grab onto and everything disappears: the former world that you loved and tried to protect, but could not save, because there are people vaster than you and more terrible” 

The release is already available on digital platforms, a little later in audio cassette format.

"И куда нам деваться" — live-альбом Бродячей собаки, психоделического электроакустического дуэта в составе скрежета саксофона и электрической гитары, вокала, синтезаторов и этнических инструментов. Участники проекта Владимир Сидоров и Илья Шейман изучают различные формы абсурда и хаоса, кричат и замирают, выкорчёвывают всё, что врыто в глубину мыслей и чувств. 

Авторы рассказывают о содержимом альбома так: 

“Наступила война, которую мы не хотели, боялись, против которой мы боремся и которую ненавидим. Она по сей день не даёт нам спать по ночам, преследует нас по пути на учёбу и работу, караулит у продуктовых магазинов и в метро, просачивается в лица людей и гниёт, заражая их внутренние органы. Другие теряют дома и близких, разлетаются по миру в поисках воздуха и безопасности и не знают куда им деться. 

Мы тоже не знаем куда нам деться. Этот лайв — наш часовой рассказ об ощущении потерянности и пустоты, когда не за что хвататься и все пропадает: тот прежний мир, который ты любил и оберегал, но не смог сохранить, потому что есть люди выше и страшнее”. 

Альбом складывался весной и летом 2022-го года, был записан живьём для TESTFM в сентябре.

Pantene was a live performance art-pop group that existed in Berlin, Germany in 2015. Its four band members: Marijn Degenaar, Molly Dyson, Olle Holmberg, and Rahel Tierbach took a DIY approach to instrumentation and arrangement, where intergenerational low-fidelity samples collide with subversive and pithy lyrics. Using laptops, MIDI, samplers and effects units to deliver re-contextualised pieces of music, Pantene explored issues surrounding cultural constructions of power, identity and sexuality with effortless aplomb.

This collection of 4 songs has been, for the past few years, sitting on Soundcloud slowly collecting plays, likes and no doubt intrigue from its listeners, as it seems since the time of upload Pantene have gone silent. Super Utu will be reissuing this remastered digi-relic on 10” polyvinyl chloride for the very first time. On side A is Don’t Touch Me I’m Dancing, a piercing retribution to seedy characters who lurk in dark corners of nightclubs. Molly and Rahel’s disaffected vocals pan “It’s a quest for satisfaction. A finger in every hole.” As if the nightclub is the playing field for some sort of sadistic sexual sport. Just Business, dejectedly examines our autonomy as individuals existing in an increasingly monotonous world controlled by capitalists. It’s the kind of work Barbara Kruger might have written if she decided to make music instead of visual art. Olle reflects “…cos everywhere you go there is another IKEA store to stock up your new life.” It’s a witty remark that would feel as much at home in a dole-wave jangle as a David Foster Wallace novel. At once extremely familiar, yet totally mentally isolating.

On the flip we hear Near To The Wild Heart. A legato, time-warped sample breathes deep and heavy beneath the reverb drenched vocals which sing “I am calm, I am cool, I wait for you. Take me all the way down, stretch it to the limit.” The lyrics float around in the back of your mind, in the exact same way the thought does that the attractive other from across the room, who’s been making eyes at you all night, might go home with you. On My Knees 2 Pray also does not falter in it’s sexually implicit/explicit vocal tango. The hapax legomenon of sultry deutsche sprache translates to “Virgin Mary, I know you see me. My knees only suffer for you.” 

While public discourse on sampling is contentious, it definitely pays to look beyond the technicalities and understand the context and contention of the creator(s). Pantene’s use of samples trounce any blatant pastiche. They re-appropriate decades old night club hits into breath-of-fresh-air political-pop songs. Perhaps you could even call them protest songs. At least we’re confident in knowing that they’ll be broadcast in institutions which were once symbols of anti-establishment, freedom and expression. Maybe they’re still like that. or Maybe not.
