For Episode 02 of the Balearic London mix series we're joined by the amazing Jaye Ward. Jaye is an expert at all things weird and wonky, from ambient to techno, and in this mix she explores the trippier sides of balearic. DJ Harvey selected her several times to support him - be it at his album launch or clubs like KOKO - so you know she must be excellent with his stamp of approval. Expect the unexpected and dive in.

You may be surprised to hear, after listening to the first Phase of the Resonance 10-year anniversary compilation which features a very ambient track by Ravelston that this is indeed the same artist who got everyone very much dancing at the compilation's launch party in June....but I assure you it is. If you were there, you know. If you weren't, then get yourself initiated and enjoy this 45 minutes of cosmic, bass-powered, post-disko from Edinburgh's Ravelston.

Resonance: 10 Years of Invisible Inc Label Night Part 2: Ravelston (LIVE)

There can't be many acts with as wide an appeal as Sheffield producer and artist Yarni. The late, great Andrew Weatherall was fond of dropping his tunes, Gilles Peterson and Luke Una are fans, and radio types Craig Charles and Huey Morgan are often known to slide one into their 6Music schedules.

He's just announced what he's calling his most ambitious project to date, "Anemoia," an album exploring the Greek concept of nostalgia for a time never known, collaborating with ten musicians and vocalists across ten tracks that weave disco, soul, jazz-funk, hip-hop and trip-hop into a thoroughly modern tapestry. "This isn't about recreating the past, but channeling its spirit into something new," he says.

It's set for an October release on Stanhope Records, with a string of teaser singles to keep an eye out for in the meantime. But us being the impatient types that we are, we persuaded him to take to the decks for a mix session right here, right now...

Scuol Palace, tucked away in the Eastern Mountains of Switzerland, hosted the 1st Multiplay Festival, a beautiful foray into the wilderness, curated with love and attention. I was honoured to be invited to close the outdoor stage on Saturday night. A big bag of vinyl and some choice digital personal cuts and unreleased material as well as numbers from my circle.. 
Open the bag, do not prepare, exist in the moment and enjoy the ride, it’s where moments meld and the joy happens, the unexpected. Energy levels were high, the recording is no frills and raw!

TP548 Kelvin Andrews (Love International Sunrise Sessions)

As the world and its wife tries to board the last plane out of 2020, Eclectics rolls up with a charter flight big enough to ferry all-comers to Shangri-La. The Oh! EP, from Ibiza-based Italian producer Luca Averna and legendary British veteran Chris Coco, is 35 minutes of delightful, deep-dive distraction from a world gone mad.

This isn’t simply a collection of tunes sitting cheek-by-jowl with their remixes, this is a soaring suite – a movement in five parts put together with care, confidence and consummate craft.

First up on the in-flight entertainment is “There Is No Planet B”. Despite the distress-signal sentiment of the title, it’s an audio hug of breathy synths, languorous lead lines and slow, whirling propeller percussion. A mid-paced reminder that we really are all in this together, the melodic flow coalesces midway through, giving directions to the dance.

The Veteran Delinquents (Joe’s Bakery and Passport to Paradise stalwart Craig Christon along with producer Tim Hutton) pick up the baton and increase the momentum like veteran DJs reading the room. Their remix follows on seamlessly from the original, bigging up the boogie with handclaps, piano and a beat that channels electro and new wave New York.

Next up is Jazxing (The Very Polish Cut-Outs/ Transatlantyk), who find another gear and chug straight ahead – full steam in widescreen. Increasing the bandwidth even further they throw in guitar licks and percussive punctuation, forcing the familiar melody into bold new territory.

And suddenly, there you are, in the middle of a four-to-the-floor groove for discerning dancers after a journey so smooth you couldn’t even feel the corners.

As the bass peters out, title track “Oh!” blossoms into view, building slowly, layers lapping over each other, gentle yet steady, fragile but with a firm foothold. The pace has quickened, but the pin-perfect pacing means you don’t realise until you’re halfway in and committed to the ride. Oh! indeed…

Then, the final act. Once again, Eclectics frequent flier James Bright tales the controls and banks away beautifully from the original, leading you into territory littered with broken beats, rippling synths and an afro-infused groove. This is all played out against a gentle backdrop, a watercolour wash of sound that smooths the flightpath, tempers the turbulence and joins the dots between guitar flourishes and snare snaps.   You have reached your destination. Enjoy.
