Mix of the Week #522: Nebraska

Al needs no introduction as one of the most familiar faces in the underground dance scene for over 30 years.

He started out dj'ing at various warehouse parties around London in the late eighties, his big break came after running several successful parties at the notorious Brain Club in 1990. He then moved on to be resident at the legendary Love Ranch In Leicester Square. He was also one of Danny Rampling's resident djs at his Pure night at the Milk Bar in London.

During this time he formed a musical partnership with Peter Cunnah and D:ream was born. They captured the number one spot in the U.S. and U.K. dance charts in mid-1992 with their first single, 'U R The Best Thing'. The follow up single, 'Things can Only Get Better' hit No.1 in the UK and several charts worldwide in 1994 when re-released. Their first album, 'D:ream On Vol 1', went platinum in the UK. D:ream's latest EP, Meet Me at Midnight, was released in May and a new album is due for release later this year.

He went on to set up the very successful Retroforward in the mid-90's, bringing some of the world's finest underground djs to Birmingham, which still runs at the Hare & Hounds and still sells out every time. His Field Of Dreams project with Chris Kentish has been met with global recognition and their massive remix of Les Crocodiles 'La Nuit Des Tropiques' has become an ALFOS staple. Further EP's have been met with critical acclaim and sold out within weeks. 

Al has dj'd at some of the finest clubs all over the world, including Back To Basics, Miss Moneypenny's, Cream, Up Yer Ronson, Clockwork Orange, Gatecrasher, Love To Be and Rise and we are absolutely delighted to welcome him as the latest addition to our roster of guest mixers.

Following on from his beautiful release on Claremont 56 in 2018, Alter Leo aka Denis Leonovich, takes a different approach for this new e.p on the Kinfolk imprint and produces a storming world infused 4-tracker.

'Cabriodelic' is a mid-tempo march that utilises sublime keys, sci-fi ethics and military style drums to incredible effect. 'On The Way' keeps the drums heavy but ventures into a deeper sub tropical technoid-esque landscape.

'Tour De L'Afrique' is exactly that, a jaunty vibe that buzzes and rolls through an unknown afro-centric land.'In Sands' finishes off the package nicely with an acidic heavy Moroccan spiced percussive roller. 

Essential music for the truly tropical dance floors of the world.

After over 10 years in the game, Alterleo's stock has been rapidly rising in recent years following his beautiful African rhythm laced Claremont 56 release 'Sunset Sparks' and last year's belting slo-mo cosmic disco 'Cabriodelic'. Combine these winning ingredients with a dash more psychedelia and a touch of chug-o-nomics and you have 3 new bravura tracks. 

A homage to Lophophora Williamsii, track one 'Experience' is a hypnotic mid-tempo aural hallucination riding an acid bassline through the Arizona desert. Peyote in 5am effect. 

We slow things down ever so slightly for track 2 'Manon'. African rhythms and chants return and build throughout this squirly-squelch-a-thon. Debut signing Alterleo is Denis Leonovich, television sound producer, electronic composer and a DJ from Moscow. At the dawn of the decade Alterleo developed his trademark sound, which is based on the intersection between Psychedelic Disco, Balearica, House and Tribal Rhythms. Now after over 10 years in the game, Alterleo's stock has been rising following his beautiful African rhythm laced Claremont 56 release 'Sunset Sparks'. Last year's belting slo-mo cosmic disco 'Cabriodelic' too.

Slowing it all down for 'Manon' with its African rhythms and chants returning and building throughout this squirly squelch-a-thon. Closer 'Slum' sets the synths soaring and fires up the breakbeats for a crescendo finale.

eclectics is an independent record label & collective that is interested in what connects things rather than what divides them, be that music or people.

The collective, which began in 2015, has many facets to it, but the ethos behind it all is inclusiveness and creativity. The label launched in 2017 and with 22 EP’s released to date, plus a compilation and a number of edits, they’ve collaborated with some amazing artists over the years and have lots of exciting new projects in the pipeline.
