This is a podcast of people playing Fictionary! Fictionary is the game where you try to guess the actual definition of an obscure word out of a bunch of made-up definitions. This group of pals is good at Fictionary. Especially if you consider definitions like "doublure: a naked chiropractor" or "gosmore: a pony with all four of its feet stuck in buckets" to be authentic-sounding dictionary definitions.

Hi, my name is David Minnick. I write and record a lot of different sorts of music for free and/or for money. Mostly, I like to make music that makes me laugh. I've been writing and recording music since 1980 (when I was 13). I've put out recordings under the names: The Sursiks, Oven Mitt Johnson, The 180 Gs and Zermos. I was the guitarist/primary songwriter for the Detroit ska band Gangster Fun from 1987-2000. I've written for short films, video games, TV ads, but I teach for a steady income.


ICS stands for Immersion Composition Society, and these tracks are the result of solo speed-songwriting sessions for ICS online events (unless a collaborator is listed). Each playlist represents the fruits of spending anywhere from a few hours to a couple dozen singularly focused on spontaneously writing and producing music quickly.

These tracks are from a songwriting group I'm in called Bullet Lodge, which is a Minneapolis-based branch of the Immersion Composition Society, or ICS.

The main activity in ICS is the "day album", a songwriting game in which each person writes and records six songs in one day. In Bullet Lodge, we added the option to "marathon", which means you can keep going after the initial twenty-four hours, as long as you complete one additional song every subsequent four hours you're able to stay awake. The rules aren't really strict, they're just meant to keep the purpose of the game in mind.

This process has been extremely helpful and productive for me musically and creatively. Playing along with the game is a fun motivator, and setting an intention to make music all day lets you indulge in creative play to the fullest extent possible, which is great for the spirit and mind. The element of time constraint prevents excessive deliberation, which sharpens instincts and allows surprises to happen. You can also scratch the itch of experimentation and try things you've thought about doing before, but maybe felt weren't "important" enough to give time to. The material benefit is you get six new songs each time! It can be frustrating at times, but it's mostly fun — and super rewarding.
