here comes the churchy sounds.. out of the thunder

rehearsal for my performance at Give Us the Night's Culture Night gig in St. Nicholas's Church, Galway City on 17/09/2021. My first gig since the pandemic obliterated live cultural events, in which I tried out a new live set up for the first time. My run through of the set the night before in the studio went nicely, and is what's uploaded here. I had some technical issues on the night itself so that's not the best example of my sound...but I'm happy enough with how this turned out.

Opine Ko$insky - 'King Barrie

Local boy Opine Ko$insky is back on Acre with a new EP of heavy as fuck leftfield 'hop-core. After 2013's ragga-gabba hip-hop mash up Ko$insky further develops his intense yet catchy sound with three tracks of superb off-the-wall and noisy hip-hop. 'King Barrie melds wide-boy beats, distorted raps, jungle bass lines, a smattering of amens, children playing and a touch of Buckfast. Nice.

Raw Village Hall (aka Savier/one half of techno duo Savagen) turns in three startlingly good remixes, channeling the low end sludge of the originals into proper headnodding & bowel shaking Scorn-esque heaviness. Roll up and kick back. 

Fresh from the success of his Ad Noiseam album 'Rust', Swarm Intelligence reworks 'You Slippery Fuck' into something altogether darker, harder and primed for the dancefloor. Spotlighting the excoriating bassline, this slab of concrete is set to bludgeon unsuspecting ravers into submission.

Opine Ko$insky is the alter ego of Acre Recordings head C. Mantle for breakcore influenced hip hop experiments, while his C. Mantle stuff spans from techno to idm and more. The newest digital release contains seven tracks and has, again, an unpolished oldschool feeling, grittiness and a lack of pretentiousness, while holding the quality of production high and the programming interesting, something that i miss in most of the new harder electronic music. Three of the tracks are remixes by Raw Village Hall who had a good release on Acre aswell and and one by Swarm Intelligence, who also put interesting music out on that label. Favorites are “You Slippery Fuck” and “King Barrie (Raw Village Hall Remix)”. As always with good digital releases: i would buy it on vinyl.

Some recordings made during an 8-part instrument building course I gave for Centre for Talented Youth Ireland to a group of 8-12 year olds. The participants made a selection of instruments and sound experiments including the Hexbourine (pictured), a Kora, two types of thumb piano, a bagpipes and various types of reeds, an electronic tone generator and a tik-tak drum.

We are delighted to celebrate our 5th anniversary with the German producer Ancient Methods (Persephonic Sirens / [aufnahme + wiedergabe].

Ancient Methods is the project of Michael Wollenhaupt.

Since its emergence the project the has been often labelled as „pitch black techno war funk“ (quoted after an early Boomkat review) and closely associated to what later on would be tagged as the „industrial techno“ - movement. 
This is possibly due to the radical machine aesthetics Ancient Methods has developed into an unmistakable trademark sound, since more than a decade. 
However the mechanical framework is - no more, no less - a physical ambassador for a deeper content, there is a profound human emotionality enclosed in the rhythmic shell.
The project is pictorially associated with „The Fall Of Jericho“-picture, that adorned the first releases of the eponymous „Ancient Methods“ label. 
The wall-breaking image is metaphorical not only for the sound of the project. 
Bringing formerly rather dissociated musical subcultures closer to each other has been an integral and fertile part of Michael Wollenhaupt’s work. 
The results are not only well documented by releases on labels like aufnahme + wiedergabe, HANDS and Hospital Productions. 

As a prolific remixer he worked among many others for the post-punkers of Soft Moon, synth-pop greats Wolfsheim, industrial-legends Bourbonese Qualk, synth-wave icon Beta Evers and beat-scientist Powell. 
The project has also been playing genre- crossing festivals like Maschinenfest, Wave-Positive Education - to name a few.
The genre-crossing qualities of the projects not only become obvious in his productions or during the live shows (the latter supported by Wahiba Khadri on drums and guitar) but also during Ancient Methods’ DJ-sets. 
Michael is dragging his obvious influences such as wave, EBM, industrial but also classical, liturgical, psychedelic and folk music into the techno frame to drop them on the dance floors and hereby delivering an intimate, rather introverted euphoria. 

Under the Room 506 moniker some of his DJ-edits (e.g. for Killian Camera or Deutsch Nepal received vinyl releases due to public demand).
Throughout the years Wollenhaupt has been collaborating with Regis to form Ugandan Methods, with Orphx as Eschaton, with Cindytalk as In The Mouth Of The Wolf, and Prurient taking the project to new levels.
The border crossing is furthermore elaborated with a monthly radio show on Berlin Community Radio and the launch of a new label from Ancient Methods, Persephonic Sirens, which aim is to support new and like-minded artists.

We could not be more honored to host one of our favorite artists on the series.

Sounds From NoWhere Podcast #133 - Ancient Methods

I am a music maker and designer based in Ireland. I have released broken genre dancefloor tunes on Touchin' Bass, Mantrap Recordings and several other labels over the years. For a long while I concentrated on making abstract ambient / noise music, under my own name and as Withering Zithering. Now when I make time for making music (which is not as regularly as it should be unfortunately) I tend towards making beats. 

Everything I do in one way or another references music or sound as a creative material. I like playing gigs, I like teaching children about how sound works, and I like making instruments that people can make their own music with.
