216: Busy P (Founder,  Ed Banger Records; ex-manager, Daft Punk)

Musicien éclectique à la personnalité chaleureuse, DJ Mehdi a illuminé l’âge d’or du rap français des années 90-2000. Il a donné un « son » aux quartiers populaires avec le tube du groupe 113 « Tonton du bled » et bien d'autres. Mais il a aussi fait des excursions électroniques dans la « french touch » avec Justice ou Daft Punk. Il a donc réconcilié le hip hop et l'électro à une époque où c'était mal vu, voire impossible ! Éditeur du magazine Rockyrama, Johan Chiaramonte s’attache au parcours de Mehdi Faveris Essadi aka DJ Mehdi, trop tôt disparu (à 34 ans !) le 13 septembre 2011. Le podcast va à la rencontre de ceux avec qui il a travaillé, de ses débuts en banlieue à l'âge de 14 ans (Manu Key de Mafia K'1 Fry) à ses complices à Paris : Pedro Winter du label Ed Banger, Romain Gavras de Kourtrajmé, Xavier de Rosnay du groupe Justice, le journaliste rap Arnaud Fraisse, le compositeur et chef d'orchestre Thomas Roussel. Tous participent à remettre son oeuvre en contexte, et surtout donnent à entendre l'originalité du son de DJ Mehdi.

Johan Chiaramonte grandit dans les années 80, ce qui lui permet plus tard, après avoir longuement étudié Pif Gadget et Strange, de créer les revues de cinéma Rockyrama et Otomo. En parallèle il réalise une trentaine de documentaires pour la télévision, toujours sur le cinéma qui semble être son obsession. Amoureux de radio, dès son plus jeune âge il s’endort la radio allumée, de préférence avec des gens qui parlent doucement, et se lance pour la première fois dans le documentaire audio.

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show welcomes the Paris-born, Tokyo-raised DJ, producer, label founder, and sound designer @alexfromtokyo.

Living in Japan for 25 years during the 80s and 90s, he had an ear to the ground for Tokyo’s thriving electronic and dance music scenes. He worked as a DJ, promoter, translator, and coordinator between Japan and the rest of the world, before launching his own label in 2002, titled world famous. 

This fall, Alex From Tokyo will be releasing Japan Vibrations Vol. 1, a compilation which in his own words, sounds like “the heartbeat of Tokyo: electric, eclectic, and always surprising.”
