Le futur ministre de la culture brésilien, Gilberto Gil signe en 1979 Realce, un album qui connaîtra un succès planétaire, dû en grande partie à la chanson « Toda Menina Baiana ». 
Le chantre du tropicalisme, ce mouvement culturel contestataire apparu au Brésil à la fin des années 60 face à la dictature militaire, livre cette fois une ode à la douceur de vivre à Bahia, dans l’Est du pays. 
Sa chanson s’imprègne de sa région natale en intégrant l’afoxe, un rythme propre à la côte Atlantique du Brésil.
