When you're travelling through Greece, it's quite likely you'll hear a version of "Kaixis". 
As soon as I heard this beautiful old song and Rembetiko classic in the version recorded by Nikos Maragkopoulos, I had the idea to create an Edit. That fat brass section and omni-present percussion, combined with the beautiful woodwind tune and those fervent vocal parts were just too tempting… 

So I played around with some loops, added a minimal synth bass line, recorded some analogue drum machine grooves and live percussion elements, before I finished with a dub mix pass for analogue effects. 

And well… I actually never planned to release this track. 
But since I premiered it within my mixtape for the Serafin Audio podcast series, people keep asking me where to get this track. So yes, you win!

The journey of Hug Records started six months ago and we are delighted that we had already five amazing artists contributing to our project. @thomas-gaarthuis was one of the first artists to commit to this back in July. We decided to open this year with a beautiful edit of the Fugees from him. We usually check with the original artists before releasing edits, but neither Wyclef Jean nor his ageny headmusic replied to our email. We love the edit though and we decided to release it nevertheless. However, it is on donation basis and you can decide yourself how much you want to pay. 100% of the income from this track will go to our charity partner Love Foundation. Love Foundation will use this money for its water development project in Kenia and you can read all about them and the project here: www.love-foundation.org/about We are already looking forward to the next steps on our journey and wish you a great start in the new year.
