This week, Crimson Child sat down to chat for the EDM Prodcast.

Yashar aka Crimson Child is an experimental bass music producer who has garnered the attention of industry staples in the past few years.

His recent LP, Eleventh Hour, came out on Space Yacht this year, and in this interview, we dive into the process behind it and how he had most of the album done before it was even signed to a label.

The sound design in the album is a particular highlight, so we cover some of his go-to techniques for achieving a gritty, cinematic feel in electronic music.

This week, COPYCATT sat down to chat for the EDM Prodcast.

Andre aka COPYCATT is a neuro hop producer originally from the Sunshine Coast in Australia, who is currently based in Melbourne.

In this interview we dive deep into the reality of artist burnout, and how rapid success can be difficult to process and comprehend. We discuss the role of social media in his burnout and how seeking external validation was a big part of that, especially being disconnected from his main scene in the US.

Later on, we explore his sound design process, and how post-processing with saturation, OTT, and other FX are key to getting his neuro basses sound massive. We chat about his latest EP, Trash, and how the sound design on that was representative of his detailed approach to processing and resampling.

Freddy AKA partywithray is a self-described 'swag house' producer from LA. After playing in indie rock bands for a long time, he's taken a turn into electronic music with a very deep, bass-and-vocal driven sound.

In this interview, we discuss working with ZHU and how they both went to the same high school. He uncovers how knowing the person you work with in the studio can lead to fun creative results, especially when working in person.

We also cover his journey with learning traditional instruments and how that has helped him learn the type of music he wants to make. Although he tried getting by with just Ableton for a long time, using real instruments helped him achieve the funky sound he was going for.

This week, Hanz sat down to chat on the EDMProdcast.

Hanz is a talented producer based out of Norway who’s released on labels like Majestic Casual, Foreign Family Collective, and Lowly Palace.

We start off with Hanz’s musical background, diving into the lengthy process before he started releasing music. He actually started this project as a bit of a joke to prove to his coworker that producing Trap wasn’t that hard. After a while, he began to connect more with the music he was making, and after hearing a certain EP from another artist inspired him to take music more seriously. We discuss the importance of identifying with the vibe or mood of your music, and advice on finding your music niche.   

On the production side, we talk a lot about his songwriting workflow, looking at how he writes music that’s both unique and relatable. We talk about how to write better verses, and how to approach writing second verses and choruses, something a lot of intermediate producers struggle with. He also dives into his favorite synth and effect plugins, including a little known plugin he uses to build dense, atmospheric textures.

Later on, Hanz offers his advice on how to be unique in the ‘lofi-hip hop’ scene, and how he’s built up a fanbase in a genre that’s great for streams but not for follows. We also discuss why he collaborates so often, and his process for collaborating on music remotely.

This week, Mickey Valen sat down to chat on the EDM Prodcast.

Mickey Valen is a classically trained musician and producer who’s released on labels like CloudKid and Lowly Palace, and his song Meet Me (feat Noe) currently has nearly 60M plays on Trap Nation’s YouTube Channel.

We start off with Mickey Valen’s background, looking at his late entry into the production world. He studied music in college, but he didn’t start producing until after school while he was working a corporate 9-5. We look at how he grew his production skills on the side, and how he eventually made the leap to working full-time on music. He got his start producing for vocalists, and he reveals how he built these connections early on without an artist project.

On the production side, we spent a while talking about his songwriting process. Even though Mickey Valen is classically trained, he feels this hurts him at times. He discusses how all producers, no matter their theory knowledge, should approach songwriting. He also walks through his favorite distortion plugins, how he adds creative and background textures, and what his writing process looks like when working with vocalists.

We also discuss how to embrace the difficult and annoying parts of being a producer, the pros and cons of moving to Los Angeles, and some of the hidden streams of revenues available to producers.

This week, KSHMR sat down to chat on the EDMProdcast.

If you’ve been producing dance music for more than 30 seconds, you’re surely familiar with him, whether it’s from his classic dance tracks like Secrets or My Best Life, his chart topping sample packs, his production tutorials, and most recently his very own plugin KSHMR Essentials.

We start off with KSHMR’s background, looking at how he built his production and songwriting skills by himself early on. We dive into how he fell into producing for rappers and singers, and how this led to him creating The Cataracts project, widely known for their hit single ‘Like A G6’. We spend a while discussing KSHMR’s transition into EDM, and how he took everything he learned in the pop world and put it into his ideal artist project. KSHMR explains the keys to his early success with this project, and what separated him from other producers that were making the switch to EDM. 

On the production side, we discuss how to balance the technical and emotional aspects of production. KSHMR mentions how producing EDM has hurt his ability to write music on an emotional level, because he, like so many producers, is overly concerned with the technical aspects of production. This week, Joachim Pastor sat down to chat on the EDM Prodcast.

Joachim Pastor is a French DJ and producer who’s been a staple in the dance music industry for over a decade. He helped co-found the French record label Hungry Music, and he’s currently releasing with Armada Music.

We start with Joachim’s background, discussing the early experiences that led him to pursue a career as a producer and DJ. He discusses how he nearly gave up on a career in music 100s of times due to the rejections and setbacks most musicians inevitably face. We talk about the choices that helped steadily build up his career to the successful point its at now. 

On the production side, Joachim dives deep into his analog and digital workflow. He discusses his intricate analog studio setup, revealing his favorite gear and how he uses them in his productions. Ed Brew is the CEO of the popular demo submission site LabelRadar. He has an extensive history in the music industry, working with brands such as Universal, Monstercat, Trap Nation, and running campaigns for businesses like EA, HP, and Audible.

We start with Ed Brew’s background, discussing his charity music compilation that launched him into the music industry. He discusses the various jobs he’s had over the past decade, which includes sync licensing, A&R'ing, influencer marketing, running brand campaigns, and more. He also explains how his early music jobs served as a creative outlet, which contrasted from his previous job working at a law firm.

Later on, Ed Brew breaks down the development and growth of his demo submission site LabelRadar. He explains the steps it took to launch the site and for him to dedicate himself full-time to it, offering insights and advice for those looking to start their own business.

Ed Brew also offers his best guidance for independent artists looking to launch and develop their career. He discusses what artists should focus on in terms of branding, outreach, marketing, and partnership in order to make an impact in a very competitive industry. This week, RAC sat down to chat on the EDMProdcast.

RAC is a Grammy Award winning musician and producer currently based in Portland, OR. He’s fresh off releasing his third full album BOY, an 18-track journey featuring collaborators like Louis The Child and Jamie Lidell. He’s also well known for his remix work, gaining a Grammy nomination for his remix of ODESZA’s Say My Name, and winning a Grammy Award for his remix of Bob Moses’ Tearing Me Up.

We start off with RAC’s background, discussing his upbringing in Portugal and his early experiences with piano and guitar. We discuss his first DAW that he found in a cereal box, and the albums worth of music he created before graduating high school. We talk about his initial idea for the RAC project, which began as a collective of remix artists. He discusses his unique vision for the project, and how he made the pivot into releasing original music. RAC explains the driving forces for each of his albums, distilling what he feels has helped him sustain his success in the music industry. 

On the production side, RAC dives deep into his songwriting and technical workflows. He explains his refined production process that allows him to write polished demos in under two hours, the key components of his impressive home studio, and why he boiled his SM57 microphone. He also breaks down his guitar rig and recording setup, his favorite plugins for mixing, and his detailed approach to find simplicity in his writing.

Later on, RAC explains his process for remote collaboration, which has become increasingly useful during the Covid-19 pandemic. On that, he explains how he and his team have adapted during the pandemic, questioning the norms within the music industry and pushing his project further. RAC also explains his more recent projects, including a creative approach for Twitch streaming, as well as his foray into cryptocurrency.
