Downtempo sets

I can't find the words to describe the feeling I had while playing this set on the playa of AfrikaBurn 2022. I played more than 20 hours that week on our mutant vehicle The Flying Dutchman, but this set between 2 and 5 a.m. on Friday night/Saturday morning was really something special. Every piece of the puzzle just fell exactly in its right place, if you were there you know what I mean. Thanks so much if you were part of it, and thanks again if you're joining the fun now.

AFRIKABURN 2022: Ed Noodle @ The Flying Dutchman (Friday night)

I guess it was something inevitable: after starting with DJ’ing two years ago, I started producing now as well. And I guess I must thank Philou Louzolo for that. In the podcast Bakkie Bakkie I heard him talk about how he produced his album on just a laptop, one track even in a bus shelter. After hearing that I downloaded some software and to be honest I didn’t sleep much since. 

Now after little more than two weeks I uploaded my first track to SoundCloud. Probably when I look back on it in a couple of years - or even months - I would like to do a lot of things differently, but that’s exactly why I put it online. It’s part of the journey I started, and I would like to encourage you to do the same with whatever you like. As one particular sports brand would say: just do it.

The track is free to download for anyone by the way, because I like to share. And okay, because I stole a small sample from the amazing track of the same name by The Prodigy.

It was really a dream for me to one day play at The Monastery festival by The Gardens of Babylon, and I never thought it would happen any time soon (or at all...). Ed Noodle live @ The Monastery 2022

It was a big wish to one day become an official part of the Amsterdam Dance Event line-up, and this year it happened because of our own event Wolvenroedel Presents: ADE @ IJver. The beautiful venue was completely packed and there was a big cue outside, which was more we could ever hope for. After the amazing @seiunmusic opened the night I played this set, which I'm really happy with. Hope you like it too!

It was my first time at Midburn and two weeks after returning home I’m still on a cloud somewhere up in the sky because of everything that happened. That has a lot to do with the amazing group of people from the Technodrome camp that took me and my beautiful wife Fre in as family, but it also has a lot to do with the set I got to play inside that same Technodrome on Thursday night.

Thanks to the great Lev Kraitman who saw me play at AfrikaBurn this year I got this chance, and together with the amazing @shira-even he trusted me enough to play the closing set after T-Puse and Deer Jade. What happened there was really something special, it felt like the perfect cocoon for almost three hours. Thank you if you were there dancing and taking the journey with me, it really means a lot that you came to show your support.

MIDBURN 2022: Ed Noodle @ the Technodrome (Thursday night)

A couple months ago I downloaded Ableton and started producing music. Because I wanted to get some experience with making a remix, I was very happy when I bumped into the stems of the Thaw EP by @Kuby-Clay on SoundCloud. I started fooling around with the different layers and the speed of ‘Flowerfall’, and what came out is a sunny downtempo track with a driving bass which I really like.

Wow. This was without a doubt the best party we ever threw with Wolvenroedel. And for me in particular it was a wonderful feeling to take the audience into 2023, with an edit I made to emphasize that special moment. Here's a little love story. About me and the Technodrome, a truly amazing stage at Midburn in Israel. But mostly it’s about people, the great group of friends that make magic happen at the regional burn event and parties they organise themselves.

Lev Kraitman can be considered the founding father of the Technodrome, a dome full of lights with a stage in the middle. After he saw me play at AfrikaBurn last year he asked me to come join their camp and play on that stage last October. It was the beginning of a great friendship, that resulted in me coming back to Israel twice already.

This week it was Purim, the Israeli version of carnival to celebrate an important day in their history. It’s a week filled with amazing parties, and the Technodrome group threw one at the most beautiful location you can imagine: The Tower of David in the old centre of Jerusalem. I got to play there, and it felt like a really special new chapter in this book that keeps getting more beautiful with every page.

Thank you Lev, thank you Itamar, thank you Shira and thank you to all the other wonderful human beings that make this magic happen (you know who you are). It’s an honour to be part of the family, and it was an honour to play this set between those ancient walls.

Wow, this was such a gift: a big and amazing crowd gathered on Thursday afternoon in front of The Boombox at AfrikaBurn while the sun started setting. Nicholas Britell - Succession Theme (Ed Noodle Remix) [trndmsk]

This year at AfrikaBurn my favourite dance floor was created by Ubuhlanti, a community powered by upcoming regional talent. The little village combined with the insanely good sound system and impressive light show created this perfect cocoon of a dance floor.

So it was really a privilege to hook up our Flying Dutchman to that stage on Friday night of the burn and provide it with my music. The energy was electrifying, the crowd never seemed to stop pulsating as one big organism. Playing there that night was truly my highlight of AfrikaBurn 2023.

A dream come true. That was my gig at @theGardensOfBabylon Festival 2023. It was everything I thought and hoped it would be, and the fact that I got to close one of the stages at the end of the festival was the big cherry on the cake.

It began in Africa. And it continued in Amsterdam. Athie @Umgido and @EdNoodle met each other in 2023 on the playa of AfrikaBurn, where they created a magical night with hooking up their Ubuhlanti stage and The Flying Dutchman art car together. So when word got out Athie was coming to Amsterdam Dance Event, the only right move was to let him share the decks with Ed at Wolvenroedel Presents: ADE @ IJver on Friday the 20th of 2023.

From 103 to 121 bpm in four hours and I loved every minute of it. You don’t often get the chance to play a set that starts at the beginning of a festival and ends in the evening when people are ready to dance. At the beautiful Georgie’s Wundergarten I got that chance and I’m really thankful for it.

I started really slow when the sun first peaked around the corner, and while people started showing up I picked up the pace towards a full dance floor during the last two hours of my set. It’s what I love to do most: creating a journey while pushing and pulling energy to and from the crowd.

Fun fact: there are eight of my own tracks in there and I never played that many of my own productions in a set.

Georgie's Wundergarten 2024: Ed Noodle live @ Het Veld

Familiar Forest is all about exploring, getting lost and being amazed along the way. I did all of the above at their beautiful festival a couple of weeks ago, but I also played a set that at least made me very happy.

I got the opportunity to turn the small basement into a sweaty rave bunker in the middle of the Saturday night, which gave me the chance to blend together a lot of tracks I don’t combine in one set very often. And girl did I love that 😍

Let’s call it tribal deephouse with a dirty hip hop twist, or come up with a better name after listening to it. Thanks FFF for having me ❤️

As an ‘85 kid my prime teenage years were in the zeroes, so musically I grew up with British indie rock and French electro house.

Recently my good friend Ricco asked me to do a remix of his Britpop influenced band Identity Circus, so I started to channel my inner Justice and added some of Stuart Price’s alter ego Thin White Duke to it.

Of course it’s not as good as those juggernauts, but I’m very happy with the result which is showing a different side of me. You can check it out through the link in my bio and on all streaming platforms.

✔️ What are your musical influences? 
We both come from different musical backgrounds, and only found each other when we both landed in the downtempo and - what was then called organic house - scene a couple of years ago. Mark started making techno music at quite a young age, en got his first success as a producer in that scene as well. Ed grew up as a hiphop head, was even a rapper for a few years, started going to pop/rock festivals when he was a bit older and only discovered the dance scene in his thirties. After he started dj'ing in 2020 music porduction quickly followed, and the connection with Mark lit a spark that resulted in many b2b's, a lot of joint productions and even some events.

✔️ What makes good "afterhour"?
For us the afterhours are about creating a soft landing without going to bed, because that landing takes hours and creates a vacuum between dancing and dissolving into the floor which you don't want to leave.

✔️ Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about your set? What was your experience of the set you recorded?
This set was recorded in The Noodle Lounge, a concept we came up with for festivals to create a space where people can wind down, relax, talk, and connect with each other and the music. And yes, eat noodles. We did the first edition ever at Bosburcht festival in The Netherlands last November and right before midnight on Saturday night we started a b2b with no end time. We took it al the way into the morning, to create that soft landing we love so much. Therefore it's the perfect afterhour set for us, that starts dark and deep and brings you all the way into the light. Of course there were moments we had to search for it, but we always found our way. It was magical to do a set like that, because we could fully rely on the flow we felt in that moment, instead of being directed by a timeframe that was set for us. And the most beautiful thing was that we kept seeing people come back in front of our dj booth, it was a safe haven for people that wanted to switch from high energy raving to moving with their eyes closed for a while.

Finally I got to set foot on one of the greatest festival grounds of The Netherlands: Wildeburg. For some reason it just never happened before. Because I wasn’t into raving yet, or because I didn’t manage to get one of those extremely popular tickets, and then I did two times but other plans took over.

This year I got to go, and finally experienced the magic myself. And I hope i brought a little bit of magic as well, with this set that took us into the evening. I tried to cross the bridge from Thommie G before me to the live band Mèraque after me, so you can expect a bit of a soft landing. Hope you enjoy!

“Workless & Quadro” were born out of a series of regular sessions we have at Mark’s place in between our everyday jobs – little creative islands within our daily routines. The title track got its name because one of us happened to be workless at that time – and maybe that brought a certain freedom, both musically and mentally.
For Workless, we drew inspiration from the slower sets we love by artists such as Caleesi & Sarah Kreis or Mira & Chris Schwarzwälder – sets often built around pitched-down versions of faster tracks. Our goal was to create music that would naturally fit into that kind of downtempo atmosphere, without the need to slow it down.
Quadro, the second track, originally started at a faster pace. But as we worked on it, we realized there was a more laid-back, deeper downtempo version hidden inside. Instead of asking someone else to remix it, we decided to do it ourselves – turning our own faster production into an organically flowing slowhouse piece.

The Gardens of Babylon was - and always will be - my gateway to this beautiful world of organic house and downtempo 💜 So to have my name on the line-up for an event like The Night Sky 2025 in Amsterdam will always be something extra special.

On Saturday beginning of the evening I got to set the tone on the big stage of WestWeelde, a place where I’ve been dancing A LOT on the other side of the dj booth during @TheGardensofBabylon events in the past seven years.

You can expect a journey from downtempo to uptempo organic and tribal house, as a tribute to the one that pulled me in. I hope you like taking the journey with me ✨

Just felt like playing some music at home last night, a bit higher in energy and tempo than my Wet Noodle Music sets. Mostly brand new tracks, can't wait to play them at a party somewhere!

Organic House 01 // 118 - 120 BPM

Hypnotizing melodies, bass and percussion blended in a deep tribal mix, that’s what gets Ed Noodle going. From downtempo sets at sunset or sunrise, to an energetic train rolling you into the night: in any case the goal will be to keep you dancing with prehistoric power.

Ed is at his best when he takes the time to tell a story, relying on the right tracks and buildup for that exact place and moment in time. A craft he honed at gatherings like AfrikaBurn and Midburn, which fit his sound and energetic presentation like a glove. This brought him to places like The Gardens of Babylon Festival, Garbicz, GOAT in Portugal, Acid Bogen at KATER in Berlin, Secret Brunch in London and Harmonizz Festival in Israel.

Besides being a DJ, Ed also releases his own music on more and more labels and is co-founder of Wolvenroedel, a party pack that he started with YOИDI to get people dancing. And last but not least, he came up with The Noodle Lounge. It's a beautiful decorated stage at festivals where you can relax and shift back some gears, while you're sitting or lying down and enjoying some soothing downtempo music. And yes, some hot noodles to make the comfort level even bigger.
