Been making electronic music for years but only now getting to grips with the mobile music apps on iPhone.
I must have mAde literally hundreds of tracks since I started but the thing is that apart from a few albums that my Dad had robbed off me I got no trace of them other than that. I think or more rightly know the reason why all my music disappeared over the years and that's apart from hd failures the master copies were stolen by some twats I had the unfortunate luck to believe we're friends! Jealousy does strange things to some. Believe.
I began using a tracker prog called octaMed in the mid-nineties using 8 bit iff samples. Considering the setup I must say that some of my best music came out of that Amiga especially when I bought some hardware to connect it with(Yamaha cs1x and Raveolution 309).
Sometimes it can be easily believed that the more complex and expensive gear you use will lead to making better music. This isn't always the case as I found out when I finally had the dream studio. While it's nice to have the gear and sounds when you want them you could find that it'll stifle your natural creativity so just a bit of advice for anyone just starting; you can be better off just getting to know your main machines and sequencer inside out rather than spending a fortune on stuff you probably don't really need right now. 
I'd say that apart from the DAW your first options should probably be an analogue modelling synthesiser and a sampler, hardware or software and if you got the money I'd then recommend a midi controller keyboard.
You'd be amazed at what you'll get out of a basic setup. Newayz I'm just glad that producing music is now within the reach of everyone not just those who could afford it. I had a prophetic style vision of a complete studio on a mobile phone back around 1998 and now I'm just blown away at how far things have progressed! Peace and Love. The album Songs 2 listen 2 at the end of the world will b done and dusted by end of year with some trance psy psyacid who knows but will have other per4mers input in2 my7/their songs 4 once u introduce another light being in2 your composition it's no longer yours it's morphs and it's ours also will b available 4 parties weddings funeral anything hi again still not ofey with this but have a house 2 live in so new songs will b appearing as well as vids on utube peace love and light 2u all
