Joy Spring by Clifford Brown has long been a favourite jazz standard of mine, one of those tunes that uplifts, a perfect reflection of its wonderful title.

I suggested making a version to Derek and he came back with this wonderful arrangement; his feather light acoustic guitar and easy swing tempo are a perfect counterpoint to my clarinet. It's a lovely combination and one that comes as close as I've come to capturing the elusive spirit of this sweetest of jazz tunes. 

Clifford Brown died at the age of 25, pretty typical for a jazz musician in the '50s you might say. The tragic irony is he bucked the trend, was famously clean-living but died in a car accident travelling between gigs.

Rising mega-talent Tenderlonious is a South London multi-instrumentalist and vocalist associated with the growing talents of Mo Kolours, Al Dobson Jr, Jeen Bassa, Reginald Ommas Mammode IV, and Henry Wu -- many of whom have been grouped under the banner of the 22a label he founded.

The tracks he’s provided for us layer sweet soulfulness with louche RnB and a heap of jazz. MPC, bass clarinet, rhodes, and indian flute are played live with an un-quantised, one-take approach -- sort of like Madlib’s yesterday’s new quintet and Theo Parrish colliding at the crossroads of house and hip-hop.

With the melodic insights in these improvised arrangements, it’s not surprising to learn of a reverence for the Eastern jazz sound of Yusef Lateef, Eric Dolphy, Abdullah Ibrahim, as much inspired by the sampling habits of J Dilla aswell as his studies with saxophone greats like Jean Toussaint, Gilad Atzmon, Ronnie Scott alum Pat Crumly and Tom Whitehead.

On "Caramel" these influences ripen - as a punchy, rattling rhythm track slowly spreads into a mesh of heavily jazzed keys and percolating bass. "Something Different" scales things down, matching a meandering bassline -- like a screwed version of Lil Louis’ Nice n Slo -- with falsetto vocals sweetly treated for a South London take on Sa-Ra. The extended Instrumental version cranks up the peripheral sound effects, swirling through Rhodes padding before fading into a teasing bonus sketch.

Jentle Jazz is a track I made in December 2009. I had just discovered the addictive excellence that is Fallout 3, and within the game was featured a track by The Ink Spots. Around the time I was first questing in Megaton, I sampled bits of the song and wove it together with other sounds, mostly from Disney films. In some ways, Jentle Jazz is my ode to Fallout 3 and the intoxicating open world experience of the game. Enjoy!

Formerly known as Al Tourettes, London-based producer Alec Storey unveiled his new project as @Second_Storey with 2013’s 'Margosa Heights' EP. Now he drops 'Shaman Champagne', the lead single from ‘Double Divide’, his forthcoming debut LP due for release this October. 

Inhabiting a space full of contradictions, paradoxes and idiosyncrasies, Storey produces music that runs the gamut from multi-part suites of hefty sound design to club-shaking yet brainy dance epics for labels like Apple Pips, Aus and many more. This new project is at the crossroads; vastly complex and intricately arranged, 'Shaman Champagne' is an adventurous club tune crafted by a truly inspired mind, showing off his bass roots as well as his psychedelically inspired musical abilities. 

On the heels of his successful 'The Power And The Glory' LP, Perc Trax label boss @Perc offers up a wonderfully heavy, pummelling remix, followed by a bouncy dancefloor roller from Aden, who is rumoured to be the @Ultramajic label’s A&R, @Machinedrum.
