Abrão - The Tropical Magician.

Abrao, which means Abraham in Portuguese,
was born in 1963, in Sao Paulo, Brazil,
growing up in the 60s, in the jewish ghetto of Sao Paulo.

Abrão, which had a big lust for life,
was struggling with society rules,
and wanted to push new borders.

He was the lead singer of the underground post-punk band "Kafka",
performing a lot in the Sao Paulo area during the 80's.
He left the band, and travelled for a psychedelic musical research to India.
In 1997 he wanted to try and start a new life so he moved to Israel.

Also known as the mysterious voice behind the vocal productions of Red Axes,
such as Papa Sooma, Caminho de Dreyfus, Waiting for a surprise,
Sabor and many more.

So now, after several years of intensive touring and recording,
performing already on festivals such as Sonar and Primavera and many more, 
releasing on labels such as Correspondant, Crosstown Rebels, Multi Culti, and more.

Abrao will debut his first solo EP produced by Red Axes,
and released on their own imprint, Garzen Records.

Enigmatic producer Waxwood has a genuinely global outlook. Born in Russia, resident in Brooklyn and a regular visitor to Los Angeles, he can often be found jetting off to far-flung parts of the World in order to make field recordings and immerse himself in different musical cultures.

You can hear these disparate global influences and inspirations in Waxwood’s first single for Claremont 56, which comes on the back of a near legendary 2015 cassette for NYC’s Styles 

Upon Styles, Sahasraha, which magically fused tropical hand percussion and densely layered field recordings with lilting ambient chords, hypnotic electronic rhythms and all manner of intoxicating aural flourishes.

“Kama” is a slightly different beast from its’ predecessor, with a sunny disposition and laidback breeziness throughout. Although underpinned by a sturdy kick-drum pattern, its chiming melodies and metallic percussion flourishes – reminiscent of indigenous music from far-flung nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia – combine with gentle acoustic guitar motifs and waves of acid-esque electronics to create a beguiling and life-affirming mood. It offers more proof that Waxwood is a producer with a unique musical vision.

The track’s inherent gentle breeziness is explored in greater detail on the accompanying remix, which has been provided by Phantom Island regulars Fuga Ronto (AKA Swiss musicians/producers Ron Shiller and Tobi Schweizer). Riffing on Waxwood’s original, they’ve added superb new vocals and instrumentation – think dreamy harmonies, tumbling synthesizer melodies and mesmerizing guitar parts – to create a sunset-friendly Balearic revision that’s both stunningly beautiful and dazzlingly sun-kissed.

Efficient Space is honoured to share the little-heard recordings of three Yolngu songmen from Northeast Arnhem Land - Bobby Bunnungurr, Jimmy Djamunba and Peter Milaynga (d. 2007) - working in collaboration with Victorian musician Peter Mumme. Yolngu are the indigenous peoples of Arnhem Land in Northern Territory, Australia; their clans are the Marangu and Malabirr, the languages Djinang and Gannalbingu. Their songs are of instruction, story and ceremony.

A connection first initiated by Yolngu actor David Gulpilil, Waak Waak Djungi’s mid-90s recordings were preceded by years of respectful sharing of culture. Mumme explains that “the aim was to produce something that is new, not in the sense of a breakthrough, but what emerges from the combining of existing ideas”. What developed was sonically unique - sprawling vocal/electronic soundscapes and field recordings that reimagine the traditional songs of black crows and white cockatoos, sharing, creation spirits and of leaving and returning home to country. Spacious and patiently durational, the songs resound in a big land with a big story to tell.

On the 1997 Waak Waak Djungi album Crow Fire Music, these interpretations were assembled with traditional recordings and additional material from Sebastian Jörgensen and Sally Grice. Falling short of generating public interest, it became well known in the Yolngu homeland. Nearly two decades later, a CD copy filed away in the 3RRR FM library would prompt a three year investigation to meet the people behind the music.

Waak Waak ga Min Min (Black Crow, White Cockatoo) combines the previously unreleased Gandi Bawong with five contemporary versions from the original album, with a new cover painting by Bobby Bunnungurr. Tracing 1997 back to many millennia ago, this is a captivating window into the richness of Aboriginal culture and collaboration.
