The visions slowly turning into fractals whilst exploring the unknown. These diffracted sights are nothing but your inner reflections, they are within all of us it just depends how far you can look or see. The same process occurs whilst listening to sound, be it here or anywhere else. Listen carefully and try hearing the music within. Whether you are here or there the road to bliss is never too far.

Three months after releasing ‘Capsule‘, Melbourne via Brooklyn-based producer Acid Springfield gears up to issue his new album ‘Primitive Landscapes‘...Our pick from the album is 'Troglodyte'. In the sacred mountains of Dandenong, the producer presents a mesmerising downtempo fable that evokes visions of cavemen hunting. As the track opens with rainforest field recordings and digital soundscapes derived from uncanny constellations, it transforms into a space-time hypnosis of ceremonial percussion and a delirium of strange frequencies accompanied by faraway utterances reminiscent of mystical beings.

Deep Listening incoming 👂

Our inaugural mix in a new series that represents the celestial exploration between light, sound and setting.

For this, @frazershelton gifted us a striking fusion of sound. He took the opportunity to build it using Ableton Live, which is a method he hasn't previously used.

The software allowed him to layer multiple tracks on top of each other, meaning the process felt more like a composition than a traditional DJ mix. He wanted to purposely blur the lines between individual tracks, and take the opportunity to play with combinations, tones and textures in a more considered way than using regular decks, or a more linear method of recording a mix. 

Ultimately he is aiming for consistency of mood, and a sense of flow, despite using tracks spanning the last 50+ years (the oldest track on this collection dates from 1970). He is particularly happy with the inclusion of the track ‘Nike’ from the seminal ‘Deep Listening’ release (by Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, and Panaioitis), which feels very aligned with the ethos behind the resonance series of events. He is delighted to give the Nigel Mullaney track (‘TSL Set 2’) an airing too, which uses Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot speech to great effect: it’s good to have a reminder of our insignificant place in the cosmos.

The artwork is a collaboration between Mark Wagner @mark_wagner_33 and Adam Kahan @adkahan. Mark creates cymatics from his sonic experimentation, and with each installment of the series we will explore turning a fraction of sound into light. 🎨

“Procida Ritual Project is not the romantic and visionary idea of an island anchored to its roots, but a convinced path aimed at giving new life to the sounds of ritual celebrations of the Procidan community.”
Pier Paolo Polcari, composer, producer and co-founder of the iconic Neapolitan band Almamegretta, returns with a new musical work “Procida Ritual Project.”
The project, with a strongly anthropological and Mediterranean feel, conceived together with Leonardo Scotto di Monaco, an artist and scholar of local traditions, is developed within the “Procida Capital of Culture 2022” program and was created with the aim of enhancing tradition, protecting the past by projecting it into the future, preserving identities, making generations dialogue, with the aim of saving the enormous intangible cultural heritage of the island of Procida from extinction.
The key to the project is a database of “field-recordings” in the core of which we find the celebrated rites of Settimana Santa and the Processione dei Misteri: a veritable mine of identity made up of symbols that advance on the traces of centuries-old echoes.
The ancient matrices, which will remain recognizable, give rise to evocative paths of authorial reworking in an electronic key, with the contribution of important musicians such as Daniele Ubik (sax, percussion, hang and voices) and Marzouk Mejri (darbouka, Tunisian flute, voices and percussion).
Among the most evocative sources of inspiration is the “Menerio,” a large peasant bonfire that the people of the island used to light, ideally greeting the beginning of spring: a purification rite that in the past was introduced by invocations and drum rolls and that Procida Ritual Project brings back to life.
The first single “Ritual” resonates with devotional songs dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, which the faithful chant in July: a kind of dialectal rosary with ancestral sounds and tones. And again, cues for the construction of this project come from the dialect novena that, at the end of October, on the long eve of the celebration of the dead, the faithful are wont to sing in a collective rite created to exorcise death.
RITUAL PROJECT PROCIDA also becomes the name of a live band, which aims to continue experimenting and researching, live and in the recording studio, from now on, through the publication curated by Salgari Records in digital format and on vinyl, in a limited edition of three hundred copies.
The graphics are by Federico Spini, who reworked the valuable photographic material by Roberta Riccio, in which the Turchini are portrayed during the Venerdì Santo procession.

MIDNITE SPARES: COMPILED BY ANDRÁS AND INSTANT PETERSON LP/DIGI OUT 09 SEPT

On Midnite Spares, Australian music devotees András and Instant Peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the 80s and 90s. Through co-presenting weekly radio show Strange Holiday, the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores, searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. The 10 tracks acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3RRR and more often than not, the artists themselves.

Renowned mixed media artist Maria Kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of Trust Me, her partner Philip Brophy responsible for digital and analogue sonic construction. A recurring character in András and Instant Peterson’s investigations, Brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film Salt, Saliva, Sperm and Sweat, recorded as →↑→ (pronounced “Tch Tch Tch”).

Other links are thread under the surface. Melbourne inner north experimentalist David Chesworth explores his Australiana songcraft leading Whadya Want?. The short lived project also featured Philip Jackson, whose duo The Couch is restored from Fast Forward’s dance issue - a pioneering cassette fanzine published by early-80s 3RRR personality Bruce Milne.

The collection binds a certain musicianship that’s indifferent to fame or chart success, although some artists unwittingly experienced this before and after. Poets of the Machine’s Grace Jones techno-wave was a modest moment for Coral Island and Red Stripe, an English migrant who once celebrated a #1 UK Christmas single with an acapella cover of Yazoo, while the morbid coming of age electronics of Foot and Mouth is a lesser known prologue to Sean Greenway and Matty Whittle’s rise as legendary teen punks heroes God. Quickly becoming a modern dancefloor hit, Mumbo Jumbo’s sole release Wind It Up is only now basking in it’s brilliance.

The remaining figures shape the diversity further. There’s Sydney dub addicts The Igniters, Mix’s groovy synth song about masturbation and the Cameron Allan/Graham Bidstrup soundtrack for petrol headed ozploitation film, Midnite Spares - the compilation’s namesake.
